Getting to Know / Sies Marjan

Every city has its own unique characteristics that inspire designers – in New York, it’s a surprisingly colorful mix these days that’s drawing the attention of the stylish masses. Namely Sies Marjan, by designer Sander Lak, who showed his second collection this past Sunday to a crowd decked out head-to-toe in his designs. Designs in so many unusually brilliant colors they could fill a very fashionable crayon box!
It’s no surprise then that our friend Megan Bowman Gray’s favorite emerging New York designer was Sies Marjan, of course she has a personal connection to the designer behind the label – but these days, it takes a lot more than friendship to stand out.
Here’s Megan on why Sies Marjan stands out, what’s surprised her the most, and how she sees every fashionable girl wearing the Fall ’16 collection.
I love all the yellow pieces, but each piece is very special to me. I can see different parts of Sander in each one. I feel like the bright colors are my favorite, because he has an aversion to black, and I love how bright he went. Intimidating yet playful.
I can envision people wearing one of his bright pieces with subdued colors or casually sling one of his furry jackets / shrugs around their shoulder with a pair of jeans and white tee. I know that women will be able to digest and make pieces of this collection their own.
His mix of colors, textures and silhouettes was truly amazing. The exploration didn’t stop on the runway because as you get close and personal with each piece you discover something more. It was playful and unapologetic, I could see that he really understands women and what we are lacking in the industry. There was a piece in there for every type of girl.
Hi Brie –
I love her jacket and the dancing prints on the fabrics. Are they embroidered or screen printed? Really lovely – thank you!
I am loving those pants– that gorgeous texture. And the shoes are so fun.
