Friends on Screen

Cher and Dionne. The ultimate, iconic high school besties. I don’t think there’s a movie friendship that rivals the one they share–it’s even what inspired this editorial!
Their fashion is obviously killer. Ridiculous hats, pleated minis, cropped cardigans, girly slips… the 90s trends are on point. Alaïa’s designs make an appearance (like a totally important designer!), so does a dress from a young Calvin Klein.
But, Cher and Dionne are more than just a bunch of clothes. Their bond runs even deeper than their outfit coordination. Growing up, I always hoped that I would find friends like C&D, and that we would call each other on our (very large) cell phones as we walked together down the hall.
We couldn’t help but notice that often these on-screen friendships are so intertwined, they even take fashion cues from each other. And because we’re celebrating all things Friendship on the site this month, we decided to embody three of our favorite female duos of the past few decades. –Christina
As a 90s kid, Rachel and Monica have always stood out in my mind as the paragon of TV best-friendship. Though Rachel was always known as the most fashionable friend–she worked for Ralph Lauren, had a penchant for mini skirts, swept the nation with what came to be known as her eponymous haircut, and nearly left her soulmate for a fashion job in Paris–I must admit that it’s Monica’s style that feels most interesting to me.
An early spearheader of the normcore trend, Monica is most known for her wardrobe full of mom jeans and button-downs, backwards baseball hats and sensible boots. She understood the pleasure of workwear, always looked at ease in her outfits, and knew just how to turn it up for a night out. Though you can find copies of Rachel’s pieces at your neighborhood Urban Outfitters right this minute, I’d suggest investing in Monica’s aesthetic–as those pieces, like her friendship with Rachel, are sure to endure! –Linne
There are many, many reasons why I can watch Thelma and Louise whenever it’s on. Two of those reasons are probably A Young Brad Pitt (hellllooo hair dryer scene) and The Fashion, in that order. I loved how throughout the course of the film, Thelma and Louise went from friends on a road trip to outlaws, and their fashion reflected that. The button-downs were replaced with tees and a layer of dust. I am always one who kicks the dust up, and Thelma and Louise told me that was okay.
But when asked as to why I fell in love with Thelma and Louise in the first place, it has to be because of that fateful friendship between the two women. Who knows what happened when their car drove off the cliff, but like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, their friendship was the real romance of that story. And it was so refreshing to see two women unabashedly choose friendship over everything else. –Veronica

I really love this story but would love to see credits for the actual pieces in it. It doesn’t feel so useful if I can’t find what I’m looking at, for example the gorgeous beret with the pom pom!
What beautiful and classic young ladies. And the smiles, dear, the smiles… A big change from the catwalks where women never smile, which is a shame, really.
Ces deux jeunes femmes sont magnifiques, comme touchees par la grace.
Et leur style !!!
Absolutely stunning young woman!
