Scott may or may not kill me when he sees this post as I was the one, a couple of years ago, who strictly forbid him to wear flip flops.
“I can not see you in these shoes, these shoes are evil ! Not chic ! Joker !”
(That’s me talking at the time, picture it with a thick snobby French accent.)
You have jokers too right? In your couple? Like his joker for me are Uggs and short hair, though I’m still planning on cutting my hair one day when he has his back turned.
So, because he is a gentleman, he stopped wearing flip flops.
Imagine the face he made when I started wearing some at the beginning of summer.
Yes. I don’t know what happened (it’s not even like Birks where you know there was a general 360° mind flip this summer and it suddenly went from offender to must-haver) but at the beginning of june I bought a pair in black and a pair in white, and god do I wear them.
I find it chic, cool, minimalist, sexy. Like Emmanuelle !
So, I guess, flip flops, they’re ok for me.
Are they okay for you ?
J’en porte même l’hiver at home.
i wear them a lot during the summer. it’s great for my feet! :)

Flip-flops are ok for me for errands, when getting pedicures, and for the beach. But Birkenstocks will forever be a no-no for me.

My flip flop view too.
NOOOOO! Even Havaianas are off limits! They’re so many different types of sandals, very comfortable and chic, why wear flip flops?? At the beach and by the pool (when no one is watching) is the only acceptable exception to the rule.

after Birkenstock etc etc… the good old flip flop! Jiiiiiihaaaaah!
http://congratsyouareingoodcompany.blogspot.ch/
After an extremely long and uncomfortable breaking-in period, I do like the Rainbow flip flops I got – my main issue with flip flops is that they have no support, usually, and are bad to walk in for any distance – a good reason to invest in nicer brands with arch support, etc. But they are cute and casual, yes, oh so easy to slip on and off. I especially like them on those people who are able to walk in them without the “FLOP” part being obnoxiously loud and conspicuous.
yes, my old time favorite are the reef. Yeah, from the 90s in black. Still wearing/replacing them, reminds me how i love the beach, surfers, and all even when i’m away.

I’ve always hated flip flops and Birkenstocks. Flip flops because they hurt my in-between-toes and Birkenstocks because they’re ugly. Sorry…not a convert quite yet.

Ok, or not okay
I mean who cares? for God sake!!!!
So many people in the world walking barefoot simply because they dont have money to buy proper shoes. I still like this blog but I have been reading lately tons and tons of superficiality.
Anybody who has a minimal sense of individuality, charm or personality doesnt give a damm about others people opinion.
There is no summer without flip-flops!

I wouldn’t be seen dead wearing clogs or espadrille, I loathe them!
Mafalda ?
http://mafaldadotzero.blogspot.fr/
But they have to be Brazilian brands…. for me. I used to wear other brands (more expensive than the Brazilians) but I found them a bit unconfortable, a bit hard…. Manaos was the first place to made rubber, thats why they are good quality, you can fold them touching the 2 ends… Because I am not a brazilian person :)) I try to find them in sober, simple colors, white or black are good for me, the same like you.
:)
Well, I guess the brazilian in me considers there’s nothing to say about flip-flops. They are just like air around us, they just are, there’s no beginning and no end.
Oh, I love it! Flip flops have gotten a bad rap of late, and I’m not surprised you forbid your loved one to wear them. Personally I have a pair of spongy flip flops that I wear every day, mostly around the house. Even living in Los Angeles, which is a very casual city, I haven’t taken to wearing them around town. But maybe now I should?
Flip flops are a part of me…I don’t hv a choice. After multiple surgeries for my ganglions, they are the only thing that fit! In fact, my heel pain was gone after i started to wear the flip flop brand called Fitflops. I hv never looked back since :)
Perfect!!!!!!!!
I’m posting looks from Los Angeles and accessories:

the flip-flops are the perfect shoes for a summer time!

Love flip flops love Birks as well.
What i totally hate and believe is a no-no to me is Clogs.
The whites are really nice Garance!
xxxx
I have had so many bad experiences with flip flops that I just decided to stop wearing them. Since age 10, I have stopped wearing them because I hated the look of my toes separating! Although they may be super convenient and comfortable (sometimes), I would never wear them in public. There are just too many good shoes to wear!
I like them because they are easy to slip off and on.
http://www.FashionSnag.com
I like really simple flip flops–like super minimal for casual summer flopping around. I really do detest flip flops with big jewels or flowers on them though.
Andddd….unfortunately I have a double-standard: I generally think men look goofy in them. I can’t help it!
xoxo
T
Yes to the flippies (Brazilian ones)! My official answer is that my flip flops are for the beach (I live by the beach) and around the house. Truth? Every point in between.
G: consider cutting Scott a break. In my town, everyone wears them. Even manly, studly guys like yours.
I live next to the beach, so flip flops are a must-have in my closer. I don’t really LOVE to wear them on a daily basis, but their nice to have when you don’t want your normal shoes to get wet.
There are some strange things around our feet……
flip-flops
spadrilles
clogs
crocs
slippers
jellies shoes (Oh my !! I had one pair of them and I use to be proud).
anything else?
Not as long as Cydwoq keeps making the most gorgeous comfortable sandals.
I mean, they look okay, really cool, even, on some people. But how do you walk in them? Do you even walk in them? Doesn’t the flopping noise bug the hell out of you?
The finest diatribe against flip flops must surely be the one written by Dana Stevens for Slate magazine. It’s NY specific, so might be of added interest.
http://www.slate.com/articles/life/a_fine_whine/2013/07/against_flip_flops_put_a_shoe_on_you_slob.html
http://www.laurablogmode.com
http://modadiandrea.blogspot.com/2012/06/as-time-goes-by.html
Just love flip-flops!! As long as they are Havaianas!!
I don’t wear them to work, but as soon as I can, I change to them immediately! And when we’re at the beach, it’s simply the best thing to wear!
Love the Missoni edition Havaianas has!!
;)
lovely in white! almu

Have you spent much time on the West Coast? They are a staple here! I guess it helps that all of our major cities are all a short drive to the beach. It really is possible that we’ve spent part of our day in the sand…even if we haven’t :) I’m in Portland…and if the worst offense is flip flops (over chaco’s or tevas with wool socks) I’ll take it!
Ok for girls, not ok for guys, as simple as that
why not? my husband wears nice leather flip flops from jcrew with his white or army bermuda shorts. He looks great with them! We walked so many little towns in Italy in June and guess what? no blisters and everyone around was wearing flip flops. Unless your feet look terrible I don’t see anything wrong with them in the daytime. I have gold havainas and they are a great neutral color!
Austeridad estrema.
Un beso.

Can’t imagine anyone wearing flip flops in Manhattan. I live in Vancouver right by the beach so if you walk on the sand or get your feet wet they’re the best thing. My favorites have a little heel, maybe some sparkle. Have you tried Fit Flops, a company out of the U.K.? I wear one by Ana Sui with white flowers & gold studs that are uber comfortable – they’re meant for walking and you won’t want to wear any others. They’re the equivalent of birkenstocks but now they’re coming out with more stylish designs. Plus if you have a nice Pedi why not show it off? xo
Of course flip flops are ok! How could they not be? However, it’s different for men :). They can wear them on the beach, and perhaps when they’re on their way to the supermarket, but other than that: no. I think girls could pull them off on more occasions (though not always).
Oh, and one more flip flop rule: they should be cheap.
A summer without my havaianas is impossible! I love them since … ever and I don’t care about any comments of people (well, I don’t meen the comments here, I love to read them!) xxx
Why the hate on flip flops? Are they actually any different from other sandals? For example, the simple, chic leather ones from Joie a la Plage are just as nice as any other “sandal” that has… more straps. I agree that they can look odd on men, but that’s only because women have more beautiful feet (and even so, it shouldn’t matter). They are ideal for practicality and can look as chic as any shoe.
I live with flip flops!
But, obviously not at work, but in the heat e are living, the whole year we are with flip flops.
And they are minimalist and cool and easy…….
I love them!
Kisses from Santa Cruz in Bolivia

No!
yes, for me too :))))). J’adore flip flops!

This post sums up why I look to fashion blogs purely for inspiration and never for fashion advice. The fashion world is too fickle. I wear what I like because I like it and not because it’s cool or in style. And I love a man in gorgeous leather flip-flops. Super sexy and comfortable.
I believe flip flops have a shelf life that one must respect. They’re cheap! Buy a new pair often and toss those moldy ones toot sweet.
I have just had a vision of you with a short bob, like, just under the ears. Like 1920s style. Like Maggie Gyllenhaal here! http://www.glamourmagazine.co.uk/dos-and-donts/hairstyle-pictures-today/2010/06/04/maggie-gyllenhalls-1920s-curly-bob
I reckon it would really suit you.
I love that you’ve changed your mind about flip flops; they are a timeless, beachy, representation of tropical relaxation. I notice that whenever I say “never” about disliking a trend or item of clothing I promise never to wear, I am always damned to eat my words at some point in my life -it’s good to know that I’m not alone ;)! Thanks, per usual, for your continued honesty…it’s why I spend the time to visit on a daily or weekly basis!
xoxox
A question: if we don’t wear flip-flops TO GO TO THE BEACH, what else can we wear!?
GO GO GO GIRL !!! http://www.rioetc.com.br/ipanema/sorvete-de-maracuja-e-pernas-de-fora/
180, not 360 flip.
about flipflops – not so bad, but i still dont like seeing other’s feet
No no no!!! I wear flip flops only at home but actually I prefer Birks, they’re more confortable! At the beach only espadrillas!!!
http://whiteindoor.blogspot.com
.
solo li sono cool!!!!!!
i love flip flops Havaiana…
Women I work with find these as acceptable summer footwear. Although officially banned in the office, some have bedazzled tops, so slide by, but they still have the shape and make the noise. There’s nothing like hearing the FLIP FLOP SOUND IN THE OFFICE while my coworkers walk to and fro from the copier, etc. On their way into a meeting…. is any shoe less professional sounding?
We don’t sell surfboards at our company. Come on, wear a sandal. Horrific. I generally ignore anyone telling me what to do when they approach me wearing these because I cannot take it seriously!
The sound! Oh, it is the reason why I don’t like mules or slingbacks in the office either!
With that said, I will rock a pair or two or three of Havainas, just not to work… :)
http://tkees.com
Flipflops are an everyday staple from where I come from. You see everyone wearing them, and all year-round (Summer or rainy seasons). They come in platforms, bejewelled, non rubber, with extra straps (like sandals) and different price ranges from dirt cheap to quite pricey ones. They’re worn indoors, or outdoors, young, old, men or women. Very universal.
http://www.styleinspiratrice.com
Havaianas are by far the best flip flops ever! I wear them every summer for years and years now, especially when you spend your summers in Greece where it’s super hot and a day to the beach is an everyday routine! I bought a new pair this year in black they are the most comfortable flip flops and they look so nice with a nice shiny pedicure….Well done Garance! might buy a white pair as well.
xxx
I love them. I bought a pair of havahianas many years ago and they still there. I’m italian we only wear them in a swimmingpool or on the beach NEVER on the street. :)
I live in Honolulu, rarely go to the beach or outside, work in a professional office environment, love to wear real shoes (all stored in a box underneath my desk), and yet I have given in to rubber slippers so much so that my feet have gotten a half size bigger from no longer being cooped up all that time. Also- you don’t wear shoes in people’s homes here so you want something easy to kick off before going inside and that you don’t mind getting rain on.
I adore flip flops, i could wear them all year long, if i lived in the right climate that is.
There is something minimalist, carefree and sexy about them, they go with everything. They are like the denim jacket worn with a very expensive gown.
Absolute must though is having a perfect pedicure.
Exactly.
In Australia, you wear them all year except June to August when it’s too cold (that’s when the ugg boots come out). There is no better shoe than a thong! (yes we call ‘flip flops’ thongs..)
http://www.mode9.fr
nooooooooooooooooooooooo – so horrible. And now that people find it completely appropriate to wear them to *work*, all I hear up and down the hallway all day is that nasty sweaty suction flip flop noise – UGH. Winter, please come quickly…
But of course! Flip-flops are the best. Absolutely love them. And Havaianas are the greatest. They come in gazillion different colours and shapes, so everyone can find something for him/herself. And all feet deserve some freedom during the summer. And I have a confession – i have a pair of secret flip-flops at work, for days when I don’t have to deal with clients or for days when my feet hurt after running errands in high heels. Hooray for flip-flops I say!
I think you should buy Scott a new pair of flip-flops in return for not letting him wear them for so long :-))
I love flip flops! I think they make any outfit a bit more casual and I love that!
http://www.ireneweekly.com
180°?:)
Havaianas are on my feet evey day of the summer! I almost cry in the fall when I have to put them away for next year!
haha this is too perfect! I had the same exact mind switch in my attitudes towards flip flops! Must be something in the air…
Couldn’t agree more, Garance! Double standard though it is, I disapprove of flipflops on men. Men should always wear woven toe sandals at the very least. Canvas sneakers, deck shoes, even better, but never flipflops. There is just something about men’s toes! On women, they’re great!
Coucou Garance !
Here in Brasil, everybody own at least one pair, I own five. But people wear them at home, at the beach, or at leasury time, because in the city, streets are so dirty to wear them.
For me flip flop are:
not elegant
not feminine
not comfortable ( even bad for your back!!!)
Can “ruin” your outfit!!!
Repeat after me:
Leggings are not trousers, flip flops are not shoes.
Flips Flops look revolving in the city.
Bon week-end!
wear them at the beach or swimming pool BUT never ever in the city.i am really getting thick when i see in our lovely city(Venezia,Italy)or somewhere else in a town running people with flip-flops around.and most of the time combined with other leisurewear which belongs not in a town.
” reasons:respect and you cannot walk in a proper way.
Oh no, I hate them, both the flip-flops and the Birkies… Ugly beyond recognition, not chic and, most importantly, require THE most BEAUTIFUL feet KNOWN to MAN to pull them off as well. And that’s a problem too, isn’t it??? And here’s the confession: I wear beautiful shoes ergo I end up with really ugly feet. The thing is… you surrender beautiful feet at Manolo’s feet.
[I’d still rather wear Manolos than ANY F-F]
BISOUS!
X
Hmmm I stopped wearing flip flops because I hate my feet getting so dirty. So now I wear sneakers all the time. Maybe I’ll wear them when I go to the pool or something…
https://newbornfanatic.wordpress.com/
indian summers are too hot for me to wear anything but flip flops…i make exceptions only when i go to any event..
“(it’s not even like Birks where you know there was a general 360° mind flip this summer and it suddenly went from offender to must-haver)”
Are you sure it’s not 180° instead of 360°? Because a 360° mind flip means you’re back where you were. If you know what I mean…
On the flip flops: I HATE them on my feet, I really do, and I don’t know why. I don’t mind if somebody else is wearing flip flops, some people really “know” how to wear them.
I still have not found that perfect pair of flip-flops I can be happy about..I am on and off from them, some left blisters, some were so uncomfortable to walk in, some made too much of ‘bang-bang’ noise.
I am buying Havainas for my next beach holidays and hope they will ‘work’ this time.
Agree with several above comments – fillies are only pool and beach footwear for me.
enjoy ! http://www.colette.fr/marques/tkees.html
Flip flops (ergh hate that term) better known as thongs or pluggers in Australia are a uniform. I even have going out thongs and muck around at home thongs. I backpacked through Europe with only my trusty Havianas as footwear – I wore them until my heels cracked! Whoops! Perfect all terrain vehicles that got me around Cinque Terre and made mud easy in Scotland…!
