early-winter

12 years ago by

  • I am always so inspired by your illustrations! Merci for posting!! ^.^

  • Stunning Illustration! I’ve bought similar O-line shapes coats from Japan for my winter collection for my store.

But I totally agree with you, I don’t understand the strategy of selling everything months in advance, and to be honest I don’t think it’s true that this is what the customer wants…At least this is definitely not what I want, I haven’t even started to build my summer wardrobe yet.

  • Garance! Have you never been longing to wear jackets over scarves over sweaters over t-shirts in the middle of the summer? I most certainly have. I’m also terribly guilty of buying shorts and sandals in January. I always want to wear what the weather forbids me to.

  • Indeed, now I just feel like buying open shoes and espadrilles, don’t talk to me about raincoats, summer is just coming so let’s enjoy it first !

(but I would not have any problem buying a swimwear in december!)

  • I’ve always wondered why winter collections are brought in so early! Just getting settled into summer, can’t imagine shopping for heavy wool coats in this heat! Having said that, I’ll happily drool over those gorgeous Céline coats, wouldn’t mind getting my hands on those now!

  • I’m with you! It’s hard to be inspired about winter when it’s sweltering outside…I wish there wasn’t such a gap!

  • Garance,

  • Right now, I most certainly ONLY want to buy for SUMMER. In fact, I’ve been going to an H+M in the garment district and – after sorting through a lot of awful junk – have been finding some very fun, very current items which fit well into my wardrobe. and so cheap!

  • OHLA non moi en Juin j’en suis encore à me demander ce que j’ai envie de porter et QUAND je vais pouvoir me faire plaisir et me payer une jolie robe. =/

Joli joli :-)

  • i am sure the clients are very different, with different needs and wants; since the high fashion collections are debuted at least a season early, then the need and hunger is instilled a season early. it is a sort of chicken and the egg question: do these consumers want to plan their wardrobes a season early, and thus the industry responds accordingly, or, does the industry propel the collections forward and actually generate that desire to plan?

  • HI Garance. From my retail experience the best pieces always come at the beginning of the season and yes if you wait until september to buy winter stuff the best of the best is gone sadly.

    mxxx

  • No need to think about it : it is so cold right now in Paris that even in the end of June I dream about wool, fur and other warm clothes…

Anyway, I miss sun and heat in winter, then of course I want to buy spring and summer clothes even when snowing outside ! And if I do, i wear them « to make summer come faster » – never works.
On the opposite, to make summer last longer, I wait until the last minute to buy winter clothes, usually to find out, like you, that every nice piece is already gone.

    Enjoy your summer time !

  • beautiful illustration!
Reading this post made me feel so nostalgic of my years living in Firenze. That’s exactly how I felt every summer spent there. With the windows in full winter mode and the horde of tourists, I simply remained in my Oltrarno summer bubble. ;)

  • I have to admit I’m not a huge fan of the summer heat, so I do tend to fantasize about blazers and leather boots. I even bought a military jacket recently! But I agree that sometimes the stores are in seasons too early.

    And love the illustration!

  • I don’t mind whatever season it is I’m buying, as long as it is pretty?… but I do mind trying on coats and turtle necks when temperatures rise

now I think about it, I always mind trying on turtle necks, electrically charged hair sucks big time….

    Enjoy!

  • Check this out Garance: Overdressed: The Shockingly High Cost of Cheap Fashion – sort of related to what you are saying and an interesting take on what the H&Ms of this world are doing to the planet. I do agree with you very much though – the lower end shops are way more in touch with what people need every day of the year. Ever so often I have gotten caught up in the early coat buying fever (like in June) and whenever I have done that it always ends up a mistake. By September I don’t really love it, and wish I had bought something else….

  • LOVE the illustration !! so pretty…you truly have your own drawing style.
As for the shopping question I only really shop in mass market stores because of my pretty empty wallet ;)

  • Lèche-vitrine ‘of some of my favourite brands’… very funny!

Visit http://www.offdutychic.com & let me know what you think of my latest look post…

  • I agree with you entirely! For me, I want the fashion for the season I’m in.

This reminds me of fashion magazines too. One hot July I received my issue of Bazaar and it had a cover photo of a woman in fur. I just couldn’t even look through the magazine until fall.

    http://lindseyreneegrace.wordpress.com

  • I totally agree! I hate it when I need a new bathing suit for summer, they’re always sold out by the time the heat rolls around! I’m stuck with mismatched pieces from h&m or Target.

  • I like to enjoy a purchase in the present. I have a hard time buying something only to pack it away for a season or two, but I will do that with handbags. Plus, trying on coats over sundresses forces a paradigm shift that I’m not ready to make! :)

  • Hello Garance, you should come to Madrid, to Ekseption, we still have the summer season´s clothing in store!

  • I honestly couldn’t do it…I’m still buying more summer clothes! Where I live, the winter is long so I think I’m just trying to prolong my summer as much as possible by enjoying every second of it!

p.s. love your illustrations as always!

  • Love the illustration!

But I see what you mean, we’re getting more and more out of touch with reality, consumer reality!

I think Scott wrote once that he couldn’t find gloves in January, only bikinis, well… a year later, nothing has changed.

Is it because luxury brands don’t want to address to the real world, the real people who want a winter coat come october? And for the real people there always is H&M or Zara? Maybe it’s part of a « different world from you » scheme… ?

    Nathalie

  • I absolutely LOVE this illustration.

  • I’ve experienced exactly the same and it’s just ridiculous. I have to admit that where I live it has been raining quite a lot in the past few weeks, so fall clothes would have been more apropriate than flirty summer dresses, but now summer is back in full glory and I really can’t see myself trying on the latest down jackets and wool trousers. I frankly think fashion should slow down again. Why would you sell out your summer collections before summer has even begun, and worse – sell winter clothes at the very beginning of summer?

  • I was just thinking about the same thing when yesterday I noticed that summer shoes sale is almost gone and the fall collection replaced the spring and summer collection. It made me feel sad.
Seriously, it is strange. Nothing can force me to buy new winter shoes in summer, even if they are fantastic. I can’t even start thinking about cold season now. Brrr…

  • Love the illustration, it’s so fresh on the eyes and looks great on that cover!

I feel like even the mass-market brands are getting a little ahead of themselves. Summer is already so fleetingly short as it is…

    http://www.ishi.ca

  • I love the illustration. Agreed , I can’t buy winter coats in June !

  • I agree!! I get stressed out when I see the wrong season in the shops… how can you plan ahead like that – I may have totally changed my mind by September! Summer hasn’t even arrived yet in London!!! :(

  • In london we dress in fall-winter pretty much ALL YEAR so proper summer shopping is not really necessary!! xx

  • Very nice!!!
I have one blog also and I just posted looks from Los Angeles, take a look:

    http://www.thegavlaks.com

  • such a great illustration. and yes. i hate it that people are selling fall clothes in the middle of summer. drives me mad.
    http://www.prettydinos.com

  • It’s a pity that I didn’t know you had time to shop in Florence!
I had good places to suggest you… With summer stuff still in ;D

    kiss

    Al

  • I soo agree with you! I have been whining about this just recently! Plus I really do like the winter stuff that comes out, but I am not in the mood to buy warm stuff in the middle of summer. But by the time Its cold there is nothing left from the fall collections! Hate this

    http://fashion-flesh.blogspot.com

    xx

  • congrats on your cover! how wonderful. and i agree. we receive fall and winter items throughout the summer at APC. while it is exciting, it is hard to fathom a sweater on these hot and sticky days.
    xx, http://wordbyjessie.com/

  • I totally agree with you, Garance! But as I don’t buy luxury brands, because they are too expensive, I don’t have problems regarding it! :)

    bisous, Ana

  • I’m so glad that you have said this Garance, I have been thinking for a while how each year the sales seem to start earlier and earlier. I guess that luxury is about it being gone quickly, it adds to the exclusivity, but some brands really do go crazy. How are we supposed to buy a nice summer shirt to replace the one we spilled tomato on when there are only sweaters in the shop! Average women buy on impulse, and we want to wear stuff 50 times as soon as we get it, not store it for 5 months….. We’d forget it was there!

  • I will buy winter things on the clearance-many basics, classics, that transcend trends and then when winter rolls around, I will just pick up a few trendy items.

  • I personally hate that u can buy winter stuff now. it’s like, they steal u the summer! but nice drawing anyway…
    cheers.s.

Of course, winter stuff!!! see, how much i don’t wanna believe it!!!

  • Today’s topic is something my business partner and I discuss all the time. It was also our inspiration for creating our website, dressfortheweather.com. We dispense fashion advice based upon the current week’s weather in NYC. We hope you’ll check it out!

  • Beautiful illustrations!! I’m with you on buying for the current season. Sometimes, I’ll get pieces early that I can transition between seasons, but I can’t imagine buying a winter coat right now. If anything, I buy summer clothes a little early but never winter clothes.

    xoxo

  • Beautiful winter coats………..however i’m still waiting for summer to begin.

    Bisous

  • By mid July, I’m more than ready for autumn.

    -Brad

  • I surely couldn’t try on coats when it’s 25 degrees out. Also, coat season just ended around two months ago, and I can’t know what I will want to wear next october yet. It’s not something that is on my mind at the moment, thank heavens… I’d say enjoy the summer while it lasts and don’t waste a minute on whatever comes afterwards! If that means all the good coats will be gone, so be it. But wait, Zara will always have some when the time is right, rather than stocking up for next spring, haha!

    http://www.classy-dressing.com

  • Great illustration!

  • Garance, I’m very pedestrian. I buy shorts in summer, and coats in winter. I guess that’s why I shop at H&M:)

  • oh well… my favorite store just displayed some of the fall collections and I love it! I found a great navy leather jacket and they had only one my size so I bought it! I’ve seen all the spring/summer clothes since the winter so of course I am excited to see what’s new! Usually though I don’t buy like that on an impulse but this was just coup de foudre! I’ll just avoid this store for a while because now this beautiful jacket is sleeping in my closet!

    Bisous Garance!

    Mido.
    http://www.bowsome.com/

  • Dear Garance,
I like shoping all year round. I don’t care if I am in the middle of the summer and I’m trying on a (faux)fur coat (if it’s not pricy, of course).

  • Well, it’s freezing here in Seattle (okay, more like upper 50s) but cold enough to turn the heat on. So, I’m totally down with the winter coats today!

  • I think the luxury brands start showing the next season super early to get people to covet the items. They are planting dangerous, little seeds in our mind. Come winter we’re ready to take the extraordinarily expensive plunge on that to-die-for coat that we just can’t get out of our minds.

    They’re the devil.

Mass market brands sell on a totally different psychological level.

    That’s all I have.

    Love,

    My Inner Freud

  • You’re so right…. but last week I succumbed… and bought a winter skirt at Luisa Via Roma ;-) it was way too cute not to buy…

  • I have just come back from Florence and had your exact same reaction: winter clothes in June? We were technically still in Spring. I think it is a scam that luxury brands bestow on us poor consumers, in order to keep desiring and buying new things, sometimes they really take it too far… I can understand wanting to buy winter clothes at the end of August but June? N’importe quoi…

  • amazing colours. a stunning inspiration, thanks a lot

  • Beautiful drawings Garance. You are so talented!

    http://fashioniswhaticallhappiness.blogspot.co.uk/

  • As always, your illustrations are soooo beauuuuuuutiful!

  • This has happened in Australia. We are having one of the coldest winters EVER and Spring stock has hit the stores.
BTW this has to be my favourite illustration ever of yours!!

    http://www.jkstylehunter.blogspot.com.au

  • Love your illustration and the colours. Here’s a hint as to why some of us shop ahead ~ the best stuff comes in first and early. I’m already buying Fall/winter jackets and shoes. Seriously, if you don’t grab it when you see it, pfffft, gone! By September, it’s slim pickin’s in the designer shops and luxury brand stores. Loving the summer weather now, but so over buying little cotton T’s.

    Material Fixations

  • I enjoy your blog, and admire your photographs, but as a part-time sketcher, I like your drawings most of all. Thank you.

PS I too think that the winter-in-summer phenomenon is nuts.

  • Haha, the window licking thing caught me off-guard for a while…

I’d love to shop in advance, but sometimes you just want to get caught up in the impulse of it of finding a shirt or something in that moment, and you feel giddy at the sudden find.

  • i completely agree. for me, dressing is so much about feel & mood. how can i possibly know what i want to wear fall/winter when i’m just starting to feel summer? i need to wait for the moment

  • although i’m already looking forward to some nice leather gloves – possibly purple if i find the right shade

  • Sometimes I dream of winter clothes during the summer, but I live in Louisiana. If you’ve ever been to New Orleans you’d understand that it is HOT down here so I tend to dream of cool winters and lovely winter clothes while sitting in front of the air conditioner. And when the winter finally comes and I’m shivering, I fantasize about sundresses…

  • In SoCal it is possible to wear Uggs year ’round – even with tanks and shorts! I have not kept up with the seasonal shopping trends here enough to know whether pricier boutique shops are putting out their Winter clothing. That would be a nice weekend project.

  • I completely understand where you are coming from! Being in Australia we are always on the « opposite seasion » to Europe fashion and it’s difficult to not always feel left behind.

What I’m not sure of is your illustration… is that her leg in the middle in red or what? Maybe I’m just not looking at it right…..

  • J’adore l’illustration !

    Merci Garance.

  • Garance,

I completely agree with you, I am just not able to buy new clothes too early for the upcoming seasons.
The main reason is that I dont want to lose the excitement of buying the perfect winter coat in summer, then I would be totally upset passing by the shops with winter collections in October, knowing that I cannot buy all the beautiful clothes because I spent my whole budget on them in June!

The illustration is just sublime! It fits the japanese version of the magazine just perfectly!

    Thank you for inspiring me!
    Love
    martina

  • I don’t get it. Why is everyone in such a hurry? We’ve waited for summer for sooo long and now we don’t get to splurge in the items. Well, I get it, it’s for the clients…
    Viva il H&M! ;)
    Love the illustration.

    xx
    http://gita-oddsandends.blogspot.com/

    http://happyme.skynetblogs.be/

  • I know what you! When it’s summer and I’m just getting into the swing of it, I pick up a Vogue and it’s full of coats! My theory is that by marketing clothes for the next season rather than the current season, high-end brands can
    a) always be ahead of the game
    b) create more interest and excitement about the clothes among the wealthier clients who are inclined to shop in advance, because they are being offered a taste of what’s to come before schedule — the fashion industry literally doesn’t allow you any time to get bored with what is being promoted.
Personally, I am not a fan of the strategy, because, as a consumer, it messes me up. It’s all very well getting excited about the next season, but I’m losing all the inspiration to get dressed for summer in summer, because I’m thinking about what I will wear in winter. This inspiration was, however, annoyingly, present when I was getting dressed in the morning during the wintertime.
    Grrr.

  • 1) In winter I look too pale and I hate how summer clothes look on me.
    2) In summer I just don’t feel like trying heavy clothes on.
    3) I hate looking at something in my wardrobe for ages before I can wear it…
    4) ….so I would be wearing summer clothes the very first day of spring, or a heavy skirt without collants when my legs are still very tanned the first rainy day of september. And this is soooo not fashionable!

  • Illustration is beautiful! Can I have glasses and a coat like that, please? I would even buy it in June!!!

Otherwise shops should stick with the mood/season. Offer winter clothes when it gets colder. Noone wants to really think of winter before absolutely necessary, do they?

  • From another Australian, if you shop online there is a huge advantage to winter clothes appearing in June. On my side of the hemisphere you’re actually two seasons ahead because the new winter stuff on your side of the planet hasn’t even been seen over here, but it’s still winter! So I can get that irresistible new winter item and wear it now! Ha!

On a more philosophical note, the buyers in all boutiques have an absurd amount of control over what we buy and when. I don’t mean to advocate jeopardising employment in the retail industry, but online shopping from reputable and efficient sites with a massive range, or directly from the designer’s site, does eliminate the dictatorship that seems to reign in the shops.

  • It’s always been this way…..I love to try on winter coats when the air conditioning is full blast……sometimes I think why rush the summer…..but there is alway the shop-a-holics that just can’t wait…..

  • I loved how you said you were ‘licking the windows.’ You are too funny. Love what you do.

    http://thesisters-diary.blogspot.com
    http://liliandmonster.blogspot.fr

  • Every time when I read your short story, I first start in French wishing to write a comment in the same language. But when I open this little box, I do not dare to.
I like your illustration so much! It is sooooooooo inspiring to me – not to buy, not event to think about winter clothes – but to put some of my summer stuff together (eyeglasses, something turqoise, something beige…) Thanks!

  • Merchants are insane humans. I never understood why Back to School comes in the stores in June when most people are just getting out of school in June. I guess they have nothing else to sell within the few short weeks of summer. I was just in Europe as well and saw more Fall clothing than summer. It was 90 degrees way to hot to think about Fall yet…., plus it may not get cool till Late October.

Donc : CALM DOWN !

  • I could not agree more and really hope that this will change at some point. I don’t even have summer break yet! I get it that people like to plan in advance, I do, too, but there is no way I’m even going into the stores when it’s 30 degrees outside. Just like I will not go shopping when it’s 0 degrees and they start selling beach wear… It’s always depressing, either way.

  • I always buy both, when I see something I like I don’t care if it’s for this season or the next. But I always end up wearing it immediately. So when the time is finally there to wear it in the proper season I’m not interested any more. Ha, who ever said fashion was easy?

  • One reason is that if the luxury brands wait, the low end fast turnover brands have copied the garments and made them less desirable to buy. Also the retailers want o have the winter sales immediately after Christmas and the summer sales before people go on holiday. With economies slower there is less need to rush, though; I certainly remember in the boom years buying coats on the hottest day in July & trying to imagine ever being warm enough for summer clothes in January

  • I think that shopping for winter clothes in summer is like having your morning caffè latte and croissant and simultaneously trying to decide whether you’re having steak or sushi for dinner. All wrong. I firmly believe in enjoying the beauty of each season =)

  • Well, I suppose I shouldn’t speak, as I’ve already started knitting for the fall. One thing about Florence though – I’ve seen women already wearing parkas there in September, even when the weather seems to me as a Canadian fairly warm (16 degrees C, say). My boyfriend, who is Italian, puts on a pullover as soon as the temp drops below 20! I guess that doesn’t explain fully the behaviour of luxury brands though. I think a few people above have suggested some reasonable explanations – I’m sure the rationale is entirely economic.

Garance, your illustration is absolutely elegant and beautiful. You seem so busy these days that it is amazing that you have time to keep up your drawing. I would love to read a post sometime to hear about your drawing practice.

  • Summer sales – when they’re good – suck me in. But I do always like to think, if I buy this reduced item now, will I be able to wear it when autumn (and my serious job) rolls on? :) xx

  • its always the same:when pitti uomo comes ,they decorate(for the international fashion clients)the new stuff(especially luisa via roma) and after the fashion pack has gone=in reverse…..

  • love the illustration! and yes, i want to buy summer things in summer! i get inspired to try and buy different things from other people in the streets… that’s nyc for ya.

  • I had the exact problem in Florence a few days back during the Pitti expos…
At the end I only bought shoes, 4 pairs of shoes. At the airport I was blaming my stupidity.
    x

  • Your illustrations are amazing!!
Can I know what tools do you use for illustration?

  • Ohhhhh here in Australia we have the exact same problem! I’m in Melbourne and its kind of chilly at the moment, but some of the shops are looking decidedly summery…. I’ve brought a cute pair of polka dotted jeans but cannot wear them until at least October I think…. All at the same while I’m looking for a new coat (it is now a little too late to buy a new coat, but i only started having to wear my grey coat a week ago and it is soooooooo depressing, hence why I need a new one)

  • quel dessin !!!, merci :)

  • Hello, Garance
I am happy you mentioned about the change of seasons. I work as retail manager and in my store half of the shop floor is winter collection, and the rest is items on 50 percent discount. Even when we didn’t bring our new collection in, the customers were already asking about it; and now they are buying it as it was part of the sales items. I need to say that I am writing from U.K, where you never have a realy summer, so it is pointless to spend a lot of money on it. Of course customers want to reinvent their wardrobes, but being realistic, so they prefer to invest in long-term-use items. We can not forget that we are always looking for the newest on the hanger, and if that is the latest coat in Fur, you may create an story in your mind to end up adding the coat in your summery closet.
In my opinion, I think the crisis made companies buy less; they didn’t want to take the risk of ending up with stockrooms full by the end of season.
As I said, I am in london, so I am dressing in a springy way, never forgetting my jacket, of course. Cristina

  • I completely understand you! I just can’t think about winter yet, even if in England we don’t have a proper summer. I work for this high end brand and we are already receiving in the shop the AW collection, with the coats arriving end of July… And to be honest, last year the brand did the same and we didn’t sell any coats until well into the winter months.
The first part of the winter collection is doing well even if it’s full price but just because the style of it is still quite summery, although not the colours. Still I find that customers are not willing to pay full price when they can buy good things on sale.

  • Yes….people in the fashion industry, ( most vocally Donna Karan), have been lamenting the ridiculous retail schedules for years. I remember at the fashion trade publication I worked at back in the ’90s, we constantly ran articles on how it needs to change. The tide is finally starting to turn, thanks to the kick in the teeth the luxury industry is getting from the constant delivery schedules of the fast-fashion brands, and the 24/7 news cycle of the internet.
Now people have access to stylish ideas and products year-round, whenever they want them. And nearly everybody has cherished items in their closets that they wear all year-round, with minimal adjustments according to the weather. (Isn’t layering such a brilliant concept?) They just add new pieces here and there to their closets when they feel the need for a ‘boost’, or even because of circumstance.

Yes, there have been many times when I have been on vacation and needed something to wear right then and there, ( I mean, the choice was either to go shopping or do heaps of laundry! Which would you choose?) but anything appropriate was impossible to find anywhere except for the buy-now/wear-now fast-fashion emporiums. So I guess it’s a meshing (or rather, colliding!) of ‘old’ and ‘current’ systems in the fashion industry, while people’s needs and expectations keep evolving. Interesting times!

  • I had the exact problem in Florence a few days back during the Pitti expos…
At the end I only bought shoes, 4 pairs of shoes. At the airport I was blaming my stupidity.

  • Great article. I am really impressed by this.

  • Now people have access to stylish ideas and products year-round, whenever they want them. And nearly everybody has cherished items in their closets that they wear all year-round, with minimal adjustments according to the weather.

  • Sadly, My boyfriend and me broke up a month ago. yeah.. i’m young ,beautiful, lonely and still hurting.i may be in need of someone to love..still.

  • Health is the root of all happiness. Our life is valueless without good
