The Phone Voice

Admit it, you have one! We all do.
It’s a personality that jumps down the line, one for every telephonic occasion. Mine all serve different purposes, but it’s not like I mean to speak that way – it’s subconscious! I’m instinctively more deliberate with how I speak as soon as I hear the dial tone.
Emily has a super happy voice on calls (ok, so not that far off normal) and Brie’s telephone voice is a little softer. Garance always sounds excited to answer a call, like it’s an old friend – no matter who it is.
It’s funny how our voices naturally alter on the phone, often as though we’re giving a very polite speech. Sometimes the strangest voice to hear is your own, don’t you think?

Je n’ai jamais remarqué de différence chez mes proches au téléphone! en revanche, dès qu’ils changent de langue, la tonalité varie. Lorsque je parle allemand avec mon frère et ma mère, je note que nos voix soit instinctivement plus graves! Et je suis d’accord, entendre sa voix est vraiment perturbant, j’ai re-regardé la 1ere vidéo que j’ai filmée 20 fois, assez incrédule: “c’est vraiment comme ça ma voix?!” Sujet très intéressant les voix! ^^

My voice sounds incredibly strange because it sounds to me like a little girl’s and is so not what you would expect when you look at me.

That’s so true :) I always smile when I answer the phone. I’m told that I use “Queen’s English” when I’m on the phone. It probably comes across like this because I really focus on being understood (English is not my first language).

Oui je vois tout à fait ce que tu veux dire ^^. C’est pour ça que je n’aime pas trop parler au téléphone, je sens que ma voix change et ça me fait bizarre. Et je déteste écouter ma propre voix, c’est assez perturbant en fait.

I’m almost never excited to answer the phone and sometimes even screen calls because I just really dislike talking over the phone. It must be really nice to hear excitement in the voice of the person you’re calling, though.
My pone voice is super serious, even unfriendly, so I’ve been told. When I hire artists (I’m a cultural manager) and they come to present their work they are always surprised about my age. Because of my voice and how I speak on the phone they always think I’m older than I am!

Je suis complètement d’accord. D’ailleurs, j’ai demandé à mon copain si j’avais une voix aigüe l’autre jour. À vrai dire, on ne s’entend jamais, mis à part lorsque l’on est enregistré. Et je tiens à ajouter aussi, je pense que je change de voix selon la langue parlée. Que ce soit en Anglais ou en Allemand, ma voix n’est pas la même qu’en Français haha ! Alros imaginez quand je parle Allemand au téléphone !
Au téléphone j’ai une voix “d’hôtesse” qui parfois peut-être déstabilisante car perçue comme sexy. Après m’avoir entendue et réfléchi sur la question c’est juste une question de tonalité (voix avec des basses) et de débit (lent et ‘secure’).
Lorsque je suis en colère ma voix s’emballe dans les aigus avec un débit encore plus lent.
Je suis intéressée par la voix, ce qu’elle porte -et transporte- vers l’autre (et vers soi). Lire à voix haute est une vieille habitude et donner sens au texte quelque chose qui m’a permis de travailler la sonorité.
Donc, oui j’ai une voix téléphone….
Je parle plusieurs langues et il est probable que cela m’aide dans ces questions de voix.
Quand j’étais enfant avec mon père, mon frère et ma soeur on s’amusait à deviner qui était au bout du fil juste en écoutant de ton de voix de ma mère lorsqu’elle parlait au téléphone. Changement de tonalité, de vocabulaire et tout. Et vraiment, on devinait presque à tous les coups!
