On Beauty…
11 years ago by
I tell you the same thing each time, but one of the treasures of this blog are the comments. We loved your comments on my post about beauty, and you gave us some really cool quotes to keep and think about. Here is a little selection ! Thank you and big kisses my beauties !
Beauty is so subjective! My favorite quote about this comes from Jeffrey Eugenides’ Virgin Suicides, “She held herself very straight, like Audrey Hepburn, whom all women idolize and men never think about.”
– From Courtney
Thank you, Garance – such a great post for a tired morning! I just came across this quote, too:
“One day I decided that I was beautiful, and so I carried out my life as if I was a beautiful girl. I wear colors that I really like, I wear makeup that makes me feel pretty, and it really helps. It doesn’t have anything to do with how the world perceives you. What matters is what you see. Your body is your temple, it’s your home, and you must decorate it.” – Gabourey Sidibe
– From VermontAir
Audrey Hepburn said (paraphrasing) for pretty eyes, see the good in others, for a pretty mouth, say nice things, for a slim figure share your food with those who have none….that transcends the gisele/sjp/whoever complex.
– From Kitchen Afternoon
I want to keep it with my ultimate inspirator Rei Kawakubo:
“For something to be beautiful it doesn’t have to be pretty.”
– From Saschana
There are two quotes about beauty that I live by.
The first one is from Sophia Loren: “Nothing makes a woman more beautiful than the belief that she is beautiful.” That was easy for her to say, with her perfect plum lips but it is still true. If you radiate confidence, people start to think you’re beautiful (the Barbra Streisand Effect).
The other was said by Elsie de Wolfe: “I was not ugly. I might never be anything for men to lose their heads about, but I need never again be ugly. Suddenly it all came together. If you were healthy, fit, and well-dressed, you could be attractive.”
– From Alice

The world is made of love and fear. And when it comes to looks, so many people are taught to fear. And this fear is very often about how you will be viewed by men. So sad really. For me with ten years in advertising let me tell you this: Our fear is very lucrative for any business. The ideals are set so that we cannot reach them, that’s the core of capitalism. To always want more. But still, the only time peiple are truly happy, are when we don’t fear. When we just… are. And the way to find your way out of fear is probably: To love more. You cannot beat fear by thinking “I will never be pretty but I will be sexy anyway”. You’ll beat fear by saying: I love myself and the reason I work out and eat healthy, is that I do love my body and I love every other body as well. Barbra Streisand has a stunning personality, but… in what way was she not super beautiful at our age? http://www.lastfm.se/music/Barbra+Streisand/+images/12664067 <3
Thanks, A for the insight. Just got through looking at all those Barbra Streisand photos. Stunning, sure, drop dead beautiful. Gotta champion strong, unique women in every way.
Great quotes and comments! So honest, recognizable and true! xx

The one by Sophia Loren is so true, but… yes, she was a real sex symbol, so I don’t know if it works for everybody, but I’m sure that self confidence is one of the greatest quality.

… Et Serge ajoutait : “La laideur a ceci de supérieur à la beauté qu’elle ne disparaît pas avec le temps” (Serge Gainsbourg)
Really good and inspiring quotes!
You don’t have to be born beautiful to be wildly attractive.
Diana Vreeland
i cannot resist adding a quote of La Grande Dame D.V.
@EyeofLadyE
My sister gave me a birthday card many years ago with the quote “Blessed am I among women to live and love in such a beautiful temple.” I thought that was lovely.
It IS true, though – Happy girls are the prettiest.
Great inspiration. Thanks Garance.

This is absolutely true ! I objectively consider myself “cute”, but not beautiful or even pretty: I still have acne, my nose is a bit wide and my teeth could look way better.
When I was young, I REALLY lacked confidence, and boys weren’t very attracted to me. But I grew up, I started believe in myself, more and more. Now, I still don’t think I’m super pretty but I KNOW I can be attractive to certain men. Now I don’t only see my flaws, I can see my qualities too. And it changed absolutely EVERYTHING. A lot of guys are attracted to me, even though I look the same as before!
So my advice is: find something good / beautiful about your face or your body, and use it as a source of confidence. Just focus on this quality, make it visible to everybody, and you’ll see the difference quickly. :)
sooo good comments! I also love to read as many as possible, although they are not for me ;)
and afterwards i thought we could also learn the way we look at the guys. didn’t you mention jane birkin? Then I thought of serge gainsbourg- he is not a pretty guy, but I find him attractive! and me, if i could choose, i would want to be more than just pretty, i would want to be interesting!
interesting smart successful attractive , something like this :)
THANK YOU for adding this super important aspect. WHY do we fool ourselves that men would only find (what the media calls) perfect to be perfect, when we ourselves find perfection in sooo many different and non-perfect men? (Sorry for only speaking of heterosexuals here, but the topic is men vs women). WHY do women think that men would have such limited eyes, that only what the media shows would fit them? Men are just like us. Yes, some people do obey media laws of beauty, but they are not many. Theyre super insecure and follow the leader. Individuals find their own way to express themselves. // Oh, and a small piece of advice to all women who feel ugly: Take a break from reading womens’ magazines for a a couple of months. And you’ll find that your burden is way lighter. Then, with new and improved (i.e. less judgemental) eyes for beauty, return to the magazines and you’ll think: YES they’re pretty but why do they all look so similar??? Believe me, life’s too short to fall for this “one ideal” bullshit. Think of all the guys you find hot! Are they clones? No. So why
Le sitation d’Audrey Hepburn est magnifique!!

When it comes to beauty, I would have to go with Dior’s “Zest is the secret of all beauty” quote. I think it’s the passion for life, love and everything around us that makes anyone beautiful. This kind of passion makes the skin glow without make-up. It makes the eyes spakle. It puts a smile on one’s face. What can be more beautiful than that?

Lovely quotes :) Audrey Hepburn is an inspiration. xoxo KJ

beauty comes from within , you need to like you and the rest will follow , we are obsessed with men finding us beautiful and that is not what beauty is about , you can be beautiful to child , and elderly , a poor and rich ….. Imperfections make us beautiful and unique , beauty is more than what we see , it’s runs deeper …… Being confident and accepting your self is being beautiful !
these are truly lovely, and so very inspirational. thank you for posting.
Love this! Most perfect quote describing the key difference how men and women differ when it comes to judging the beauty of another woman. Can’t believe I haven’t seen this before! Thanks for sharing:)
“She held herself very straight, like Audrey Hepburn, whom all women idolize and men never think about.”
