Michelle’s Becoming
5 years ago by
“Now I think it’s one of the most useless questions an adult can ask a child—What do you want to be when you grow up? As if growing up is finite. As if at some point you become something and that’s the end…For me, becoming isn’t about arriving somewhere or achieving a certain aim. I see it instead as forward motion, a means of evolving, a way to reach continuously toward a better self. The journey doesn’t end.” – Michelle Obama
Michelle Obama is a woman who knows a thing or two about self-discovery. Her recently debuted memoir is even titled, Becoming, as a nod to the ever-continuous project of discovering and “becoming” our best selves! She starts at the beginning of her story (and throughout the book, she emphasises the importance of claiming your story) and meticulously carries us through today. She marks the timeline of her life through her chapters, each new beginning signaling a major change, a moment of reinvention. From the intimate details of her early family life, growing up on the South Side of Chicago, her college days at Princeton and Harvard Law School, followed by her career as a lawyer and then as a civil/ social rights advocate, to her love story with Barack, her biggest role: motherhood, and finally, the ascent of her public life. Along the way, Michelle marks so much of her own story with the word striving, never afraid of re-adjusting, “swerving” (as she calls the unexpected twists and turns of life and career goals), and placing herself in new situations for the purpose of learning and bettering–both herself and the lives around her.
So, we couldn’t let Self-Discovery Month pass you by without sharing Michelle’s thoughtful wisdom. And, if you haven’t read the book yet, we recommend you put it at the top of your list!
I have almost finished this book and have found Michele Obama ‘s words to be so honest and real. I highly recommend her book to women of all ages. It touched me. Just beautiful.
