Balenciaga On Show
8 years ago by
The fashion world has been casting a spotlight on Balenciaga of late, especially with Demna Gvasalia showing his first collection as Creative Director at this past Paris Fashion Week. So there seems no time more appropriate to reflect back on the company’s beginning.
An upcoming exhibit in design-centric Antwerp will closely examine the work of the man who started it all, Cristobal Balenciaga. THE Balenciaga was an innovator of form in the fashion world. He played a lead role in shedding the industry’s loyalty from the traditional hourglass figure, forcing the masses to consider the possibility of more sculptural and avant-garde shapes.
The exhibition, “Game Changers: Reinventing the 20th Century Silhouette” will open March 18th at the Modemuseum, ongoing until mid August. And it won’t just be his designs on show, but also the work of other designers throughout the century who were influenced by his work; including Coco Chanel, Iris Van Herpen, and Issey Miyake.
So, you know, just a few names you might know…

Cristobal Balenciaga is one of my absolute favorite designers, he was so ahead of his time and modern. If you’re ever in the Bilbao/San Sebastian area of Spain there’s a great museum in his hometown, Getaria that’s absolutely worth checking out.
Sadly I’ve not been crazy about the recent designers that have been creative director, I don’t feel like they’ve been true to the essence of the brand. Hopefully the new designer will be better though!
Une expo en Europe, merci !
thanks for sharing. I do not think I’ll make it to Antwerp but it would be lovely if the show were traveling to the US.
I really like the concept of showing fashion in retrospect at a museum and putting it into a sort of art history context.
re the article it is interesting to consider where clothes shifted from being a costume of femininity and sexuality towards being a vehicle for the designers’ conceptual experiments.
Bonjour,
Il me semble que c’est une photo de Sophie Delaporte qui illustre votre article…
Merci !
Great ;)
