You are known as an iconic, longstanding beauty editor, so we have to ask what comes first when putting together an outfit: hair and makeup, or the clothes?
The clothes, definitely. That said, there are probably certain clothes that work better with hair down vs up. Not that I’d ever think, “Oh gosh, I can’t wear this pants suit with a blowout.” But I do consider my hair and makeup, and even fragrance, as accessories to an outfit. If I’m wearing something super summery, like a long white linen shift, I’ll more likely spray on Annick Goutal Vetiver than my usual scent. And my winter scent combo does go really well with thick cashmere sweaters…Maybe because it smells like a fireplace.

Does beauty ever influence the way you get dressed in the mornings?
I had never thought about that, but probably. Lately, I’ve been trying to embrace red lipstick for the first time in my life, and since I wear so much white, I imagine looking chic with a blood orange lip against my crisp white dress. The sad reality is that as soon as I put it on, I vigorously rub it off because I think I look like a five-year-old who just found her way into mommy’s makeup drawer and went to town on her lips, getting it everywhere….I don’t have the fullest lips, and a few stupid years of smoking have left some god-awful lines there, too, so it’s not my favorite part to highlight. Other than changing up my lipstick color, my makeup is almost always the same: some form of nude/taupe eyeshadow, dark brown liner, black mascara, a hint of blush and my trusty Burt’s Bees lip balm.

How does New York (the city and the people in it) influence your style?
SO MUCH! I’m one of those women who dress for women. My husband appreciates my style but doesn’t always love certain pieces, especially the more, eh, structured ones. But I soak up the looks of other women like a sponge. Sometimes I wonder if I have any of my own taste at all or whether my entire wardrobe is an amalgam of all the women I’ve admired over the past decades. So yeah, everything is derivative.
