Three Days in Paris

I’m lost in my own city! I kept saying that to myself as I was walking on the sunny streets of Paris. I don’t even remember what direction to take the metro.
I should say that I had just landed that morning at Charles de Gaulle and was still wiped by jet lag. After dropping my bags off at the hotel and taking a shower, I was off to go find my friend Jazzmine.
I met Jazzmine in Italy and we’ve never really lost touch, but between all of our travels, it had been a while since we actually sat down and had coffee together. Jazzmine is half American and half Swedish, and after some time in Milan, she had moved to Paris with her love…
I was strolling through the streets of Montmartre when suddenly I hear “Garaaaaaance!” It was Jazzmine, up on her balcony with a friend.
I flew up the stairs four at a time and her dog greeted me – or actually almost flipped me over. I wanted to give Jazzmine a big hug, when she gave me her cheek for a “bise” (two kiss on the cheeks, very Parisian).
We sat around the table with tea, coffee, fresh fruit, little pastries, and lots of cigarettes (all together, very Parisian) and we cracked up catching up with each other.
That’s when I realized that Jazzmine spoke perfect French, with just a little Jane Birkin-esque accent in her voice.
As for me, whenever I get to France now, I find myself looking for the right word all the time.
Her apartment was super pretty and not over-decorated, more like a mix of antiques and items she brought back from various travels (which is also super Parisian). You could hear the sounds coming up from the street, French sentences being bandied about… It all reminded me of my life long ago when I had an apartment that kind of looked like hers and I’d yell off the balcony to friends coming by to visit.
A few hours later, I went to go meet another Parisian friend, not far from Jazz.
When Jazz started to show me how to get to my other friend, I was sitting there trying to figure it out on my Google Maps. The whole thing was pretty ironic.
One Parisian fades away, another one is born.
PS: After spending the weekend in London, I’m on my way back to Paris and I’m going to test out some of the places you recommended! Merci!!!

This whole post reminds me of when I lived in Paris. I miss it.
I used to yell down to my friends from my balcony, which really is so french. I mean I can’t imagine doing that in NYC. I also don’t have a little juliette balcony like I did in Paris.
Can’t wait to go back to Paris.

Yelling down to your friends from the balcony? Reminds me of my childhood! Opening my bedroom window and telling my friends I’ll meet them in Central park from my parent’s townhouse. So sweet :) But now in my house, there is this huge gate hiding my house from the street view, oh well.

Man oh man, an American… now a Parisian? Meanwhile, there are folks from Ohio trying to become a New Yorker. Wonderful how moving can simply change your life. I think it would be a good experience to move somewhere for months at a time. I like the flannel underneath the flowery print in the picture… kind of Dries inspired?

Pour sortir le nez du nombril du fameux Parisien, j’ai envie de dire que c’est tout très… francophone, pas parisien.
(mais comment arrives-tu à dire que Paris est ta ville, n’est-ce pas un crime de lèse-corsitude ?)
C’est clair qu’après un déménagement et une adaptation presque parfaite à une nouvelle ville/coin/pays, revenir (en arrière) est toujours étrange… Familier et différent, le passé qui s’incruste dans le présent, et surtout un autre regard. Alors quel regard as-tu eu ? Quelles sensations as-tu eues ?

Ah je peux comprendre – l’une des matchingpoints est d’origine allemande (nous l’avons souvent répété…) et entre la France et l’Allemagne il n’y a pas de jet lag. Et pourtant, en rentrant “au pays”, j’ai parfois du mal à trouver le mot juste, on me dit souvent, mais ça ne se dit pas comme ça etc. Heureusement il y a Internet pour rester “branché”, dans tous les sens du terme !

Bjr Garance, 19 ans que je suis a San Francisco et comme toi, lorsque je suis en FRANCE je cherche mes mots quelques jours. Cela revient tres vite. Quelle richesse cette appartenances a deux cultures differentes ! nos racines, notre education, nos gouts, nos comportements, nos reactions demeurent francais. Et au-dela de tout ca, il y a une nouvelle fierte, en ce qui me concerne, c’est cette appartenance a l’Humanite ! etre bien partout, avec tout le monde. Gros bisous.
Garance, souvent quand je lis tes post, je me demande comment tu as appris l’anglais, comment tu as vécu ce choc linguistique en arrivant à NYC,…
Ce serait vraiment génial que tu nous fasses part de cette expérience, car nous sommes plusieurs à être curieuses et à avoir peur de la barrière linguistique!

L’histoire du hug est TELLEMENT vraie! J’ai eu exactement la même expérience (Je suis parisienne et je vis à Berlin depuis un an où l’on pratique également le “hug”).
En revanche il m’arrive parfois de claquer la bise à mes amis berlinois, ce qui les déstabilise au début. Mais après un certain temps, certains s’y habituent et me tendent leur joue à leur tour!

Petits conseils restau : pour une pizza et un bon cocktail, Grazie (après le shopping de chez Merci). Okay très Bobos ! Mais moi j’aime bien mes habitudes et pas être déçue.
Pour plus atypique, Au passage, bourré de D.A et de créas et quelques jeunes chefs en repérage (toujours dans le 11ème)

Pour déj sur le pouce : Le marché des enfants rouges ; CheZ aline (plutôt à emporter pas évident d’avoir de la place mais étonnant > ancienne boucherie)

Sinon pas mal, le Guide du Fooding comme boussole culinaire.
NB : Penser à réserver pour éviter les mauvaises surprises…

Super belle photo! Cette histoire me fait penser à mes vacances à Buenos Aires, même si j’habite à Paris depuis 2 ans seulement mes habitudes ont déjà beaucoup changé et les gens pensent parfois que je suis une touriste… En plus je perds mes mots en espagnol les premiers jours.

before the internet..google..on my first trip to Paris i bought a little book it was blue now it’s red..of all the arrondissements streets , metro stops and direction of street by # in Paris ..The taxi driver used this… it never let me down..
This is too funny! Such interesting observations. This is a bit unrelated, but do you have any recommendations for good spots in London? I’m going for an independent research project for 5 weeks (!) this summer and I’ve never been before! Would love some tips!
Columbia flower market on sundays, Broadway market on saturdays. Primrose hill for the charm and views over London and Hampstead Heath ponds for swimming. London is amazing in the summer!

La marque de ce rouge a levres sublime ?
C’est vrai que ton bonnet et ton manteau immense de cet hiver, c’était pas franchement parisien. Je me rappelle m’être fait la réflexion : ” En fait, notre Garance, non seulement elle comprend les blagues de Golden Globes, mais en fait elle devient New-yorkaise jusqu’au bout du latte…” (alors qu’une Parisienne boit de l’expresso, clairement.)
Si tu perds tes mots en français, c’est peut-être qu’on ne t’écrit plus assez de commentaires bien d’chez nous ! On ne prend plus la peine, je l’ai déjà dit, on est des grosses feignasses.
Et Garance, tu veux pas aller interviewer Lena Dunham steu plaaaaît ?
J’adore GIRLS, (même si bon, le seul personnage intelligent et “normal” dans cette série à mes yeux, c’est Adam, le copain de Hannah. Les filles sont dingues dans cette série, et cette manie qu’ils ont de parler tout le temps, même dans l’intimité, non-stop, rhaaa c’est insupportable.) et la personnalité de Lena Dunham m’intrigue beaucoup…

Ah ! Paris, c’est comme le vélo, ça ne s’oublie pas.
Malheureusement la vue que j’en ai est celle d’une automobiliste qui y passe des heures et des heures dans les bouchons pour aller bosser. J’avoue qu’une fois au travail j’ai une belle vue, celle de la réplique de la statue de la liberté sur l’ïle aux cygnes.

I love Paris and I love you Garance. The way you have put words together to wrap up this little story touches my soul and brings back good energy. French holidays is my only way of spending holidays. I usually go to Paris, Provance and the South, Cote d’Azur. There is something in your country Garance, that makes a foreigner like me feel completely at home. I always miss being there. I stay and return to the same hotels, visit same places, same shops… Like for example coming back to Marc Chagall Museum in Nice is now my routine, a cup of coffee in the garden surrounding Chagall’s building is my little luxury I reminiscent in the moment of work stress. I often wonder and try to understand this phenomenon of us loving particular places above the others… I wish everyone finds their own special place on earth :-) Thank you!

Moi aussi, chaque fois que je rentre au Japon, je demande l’itinéraire dans la rue. Mais ici à Paris où je vis depuis longtemps, je me perds souvent…et quand je laisse la moitié de ma tête chez moi, je me trompe de direction de métro… c’est ma spécialité ;)

Garance, ce n’est pas possible d’oublier sa langue maternelle après seulement qqs années aux States et surtout en revenant au moins 2 fois par an en France…je pense que c’est un problème de fatigue dû au jet lag…
J’ai vécu 15 ans à Londres en ne parlant qu’anglais et ne faisant que 4 ou 5 voyages courts en France : je n’ai jamais eu ce problème si ce n’est de me tromper sur quelques mots… mais au bout de 2 jours tout se remettait en ordre dans ma tête et tous les réflexes étaient revenus…
Quant à l’orientation dans la ville c’est la même chose… il arrive de se tromper ou d’oublier sans quitter sa ville et son pays.
il est vrai que vous n’êtes pas Parisienne mais Ajaccienne…
C’est la fatigue qui vous provoque cela…à moins que cela soit l’âge ? ;-))
It’s my dream to move to Paris for 3 months and get lost in the streets. Although, more of a movie lost (leading to epiphanies and excellent vintage stores) rather than truly, no google maps and find the police kind of lost.
