It was Nic and J.B. from Thunderwing Press that told us that we couldn’t leave Garrison without making a quick stop at Manitoga, the designer Russel Wright’s home.
I’m not going to go over Russel Wright’s whole story, but what I loved about his house was the harmony he created with nature way before it was in style to do so.
He took down the wall between the interior and exterior. He installed green roofs so that the house would blend in totally with the landscape. He was so meticulous that he even designed the rocks around his house to create a perfect waterfall. For him, the “Moss Room” (a space dedicated to letting the moss grow perfectly) was a completely separate part of the house itself.
Of course, the house has grown older, but I found it so inspiring that I wanted to share some photos with you.

Esquisite…..
Only the intercom (?) seemed dated. The rest looked sublime! Love it all!

Magnifique!
Great shot, it looks amazing! Very unique.

Really inspiring. Thanks for sharing it with us!
Love the depth of this picture. How can you always take pictures always so beautiful?

Love the first photo – very simple and full of a variety of textures. The small wooden chair on the 9th photo is a very unusual design – I really like it.

It’s amazing to see these photos, imagine how he would transcend now with modern technology…
C’est sublime. <3
Beautiful…
reminds me in some ways of my parents house in jersey. this one is fantastic though, with the modern influences and greenery

This is so beautiful and serene. Can you imagine how wonderful it would be to live in such a place? I’d love to have those sweet flower pitchers for my own home.

That’s just lovely. So serene…thanks for taking us there …
There are so many reasons why I love this post. Thank you! I’ve also ordered Russel and Mary’s book. I love this kind of design and this kind of setting. An hour out of NYC you say? Hmmm, and I bet there’s even a train.
This is one of the best things I saw in a really long time on the net. Chapeau!
So cool…

canon, j’adore ! à quand des photos de Corse???
Bisous
Zen…..
So beautiful! Similar to the “Waterfall House” from Frank Lloyd Wright.

Garance! I am in Paris, too, sans le petit chien, for several weeks. Shall we rendez-vous at the Flore for a Sancerre or a pot of chocolat chaud?
Oh, Garance – what a wonderful post. It took me there, to Manitoga. Thank you.
J’adore toutes ces pierres apparentes
wow Garance! One of my favorite posts for sure, I love the design and deco of this house!

I have been a RW fan and collector for decades but have never seen his home photographed so beautifully. Thank you for sharing!
amazing photo. the light is beautiful and the colours are very nice.
What a peaceful home. Just looking at it puts my mind at ease. Thank you for the mental vacation Garance!

Magnifique – j’adore le service à thé!
C’est vraiment à couper le souffle
I love the use of all that timber. What a house!
What a well done architectural job, really forest-like on the outside and still so clean on the inside.
