I’m not really one for patterns and prints. Stripes and the occassional leopard print shoe are about as bold as I get. However, I’ve got a serious soft spot for Hawaiian print.
I’d like to tell you a fun story about how it started with my love for Elvis’ Blue Hawaii and the beach, but I’m from Minnesota. I know snow (and Prince) better than anyone, which actually might explain why I’m so drawn to this tropical print…
This spring, we saw it just about everywhere (and we are going to talk more about how to wear it soon!) but it was this shirt that really got me. It’s from Saint Laurent and it’s mens– which is actually great becuase the fit is a little bit boxier so you will feel, well, like the king himself. Since it’s May, I’m officially declaring the beginning of Hawaiian shirt season.
Hello Alex!

Imagine a time when guys used to wear these kind of shirts all the time. I love how Hedi takes all the classics and makes them just a little bit better. This would look amazing on any girl!

Love this post, who can hate a Hawaiian shirt when it’s so happy? So funny that I also posted on prints today, but my confession is that I am OBSESSED with patterns! Check it out if you have a chance http://www.enduringethereal.com/home/2014/4/30/print-addict

Hawaii is hot all right and not just the temperature there. I’m leaving in a few weeks for Kauai where I will hunt for vintage shirts. I’m bringing back fabric to make purses. Aloha.

Jusqu’a maintenant elles me font horreur.

I love Hawaiian shirts ! I even started my own little collection of vintage ones because my boyfriend has been himself collecting them for many years and now has 120 shirts, coded by themes…toucans, surfers, cities, beaches etc etc…..I wrote about it here
http://www.fashionsphinx.com/because-it-is-summer/
he also looks for great fabrics and has new shirts made to measure by a film costumer in NY
I now wear hawaiian shirts all summer with everything ….usually open with a slouchy white tank top underneath

Zeus ! Apollon ! Couché !
Ah encore toute ma jeunesse …
I find it funny how even the most commonly despised clothes eventually happen to be in style. I think it was Nina Garcia who claimed in one of her books that hawaiian shirts are tacky and they never fit anyone. Still, I’ve always thought such statements were quite risky, because something that appears disgusting today may look just right tomorrow – sometimes it needs just a little touch up.
Oh Alex. That shirt has got my dreaming since I saw it on the runway!! Perhaps you could send it to me lol
Nice shirt , i like the print!
Passa a trovarmi VeryFP

Prints have really started to grow on me in the past year. I like this one, but would prefer a different color.

Hawaiian never goes out of style. In the ’80s, it was a way to be retro and slightly subversive–it was after the long hair of the ’70s, so for guys who wanted to be anti-establishment without being associated with hippies, the Hawaiian shirts fit the bill in an office of white shirts and dark ties.
I recall a certain luau given at the apartment of a friend…who looked an awful lot like Magnum P.I….he brought in bags of sand and turned his living room into a beach, with a kiddie pool.
My husband has a closet full of Hawaiian shirts. The louder the better. He wears them as soon as temperatures rise past the 50s.

This flower-print shirt is really cool for SPRING!

Just a question for you Alex :
Would you find it funny and fashionable if none of the expensive fashion designer were selling some ?
I personally don’t like the hawaiian print, I find it “mauvais goût”, but it’s not the question.
There are so many things that comes back in fashion, it’s cyclic, you can like it or not, but if those were only sold at top shop, with no designer name on it and didn’t appear on a cat walt, would you like it ?
Don’t get me wrong this is no bad intentioned criticism, just a question for you, I’m really curious about your answer.
(And sorry if me syntax is not right, I’m from switzerland..)
Have a nice day !
Marie
When it’s done wrong: awful. When it’s done right: the perfect balance between casual/chic!
Bring on the prints…
