You know, I love all things collage, journals, fancy paper, fancy fonts…
So when it came time to make my own stationery (an attempt to be perfectly well brought up, and send my thank you notes on time – which is a whole other story, because just having the right paper DOES NOT guarantee that the notes go out in a timely fashion), I had tons of ideas.
I needed some craft paper, tracing paper, some gold paper, I wanted to include illustrations, but not always the same ones, something more personalized… I wanted people to get a note that was more like a mini-gift.
Yep, and it’s not exactly easy to find people who can do all of that, so it took some time.
[and I’ll spare you the description of the months of desperation because I’m really not the type to get desperate about this sort of thing. I’m so the anti-Martha Stewart.]
Long story short, one day, I found it. A friend of mine showed me some cards she had and I found them as beautiful as they were unique.
“Thunderwing Press!” She told me.
I called them and they came by to see our studio and a few weeks later, I finally had my thank you cards, exactly as I imagined them.
And since they’re oh so nice, they invited me to take a tour of their studio in Garrison, an hour outside New York.
I loved it. They work as a pair and not only do they make prints, but Thunderwing is an amazing design studio as well.
Here’s a few photos of their studio, with some of their pieces I loved most.
Next time, I’ll ask them to think up my entire project!
On that, I’ll let you go. I’ve got a few thank you notes to attend to.

Beautifully understated, I’m really starting to develop a weird obsession with cool stationery, cards, pens…etc. Love them! I think thank you cards are definitely coming back in, it’s a great way to make people feel appreciated.

J’ai découvert les cartes de remerciements assez récemment et suis aussi en train d’étudier pour en faire pour l’entreprise. Mais le choix du texte par défaut, du graphisme, de la couleur et épaisseur du papier… aahh. Je trouve ca long et agréable à faire à la fois. :)
J’aime beaucoup les cartes de remerciement. Simple, efficace, le summum de la politesse et du respect lors de l’envoi d’un courrier. Rien d’administratif ou rébarbatif comme une lettre classique.
Attention to detail is what makes the difference between good and excellent.

Ca donne envie de les rejoindre dans leur atelier ! Très beau papier, personnellement j’aimerai effectuer un travail plus tard où je pourrai envoyer des “thank you notes”. Cela peut paraître superficiel mais j’aime ce côté “ancien” où le mail n’a pas encore devancé l’écriture et le papier. Cela renvoi vraiment un côté personnel à son courrier.

Je crains que c’est une tradition en voie de disparition. Récemment j’ai même reçu un faire -part pour un mariage sur Facebook. Facebook?! Ces traditions valent la peine d’être chéries, tout comme l’écriture. J’écris rarement des thank you notes mais j’écris presque chaque jour dans mon journal. Ceux qui recevrons les tiennes, accompagnées de ces belles illustrations, sont chanceux…

With a grandmother and mother who would notice an unsent thank you, I also personalize my stationary not just for myself, but as you said, to provide one a little present. Gift shops of art museums can have beautiful note cards as well.
My grandma has now had the coolest stationary of everyone in the past couple of years, sending everyone little notes about anything on stationary headed with ” A Note From Joan” in YELLOW – simple perfection of the older generations

Luckily my mom is an artist and has a vast collection of stationary with her drawings from over the years… I borrow from her! On my first trip to Italy I bought a letter seal with my initials and some gold wax to go with it but I have to say your stationary is something else all together! So beautiful!

Pour les thank you notes, avoir des cartes, c’est déjà un bon début je crois: j’ai remarqué que j’envoyais beaucoup plus facilement un petit mot quand j’avais ce qu’il faut à la maison (carte et timbres surtout, parce que le passage à la poste avec la queue de 3km, non merci)

Excellent choix ! C’est très élégant. Sobre et raffiné à la fois, frais et féminin. Les personnes à qui tu adresseras ces cartes seront ravies, c’est certain.
Pour répondre à ta question, les remerciements, je les envoie la plupart du temps par texto. J’ai un peu honte de l’avouer. Mais la technologie a fini par envahir tous les aspects de la vie sociale. Lorsque les relations sont moins familières et sont plus distantes, j’adresse une carte de visite, mais tout ce qu’il y a de plus classique. Du coup, tu me donnes vraiment envie de mettre au point quelque chose de beaucoup plus personnel. Et il est vrai que plus la carte et l’enveloppe sont jolies, plus on a du plaisir à les écrire et à les faire parvenir à leur destinataire.
J’exprime souvent ma gratitude. C’est quelque chose de fondamental dans les relations. Mais cette habitude me semble beaucoup plus ancrée dans les pratiques culturelles américaines qu’européennes. Je n’ai pas l’impression que les Français soient des grands pratiquants en terme d’expression de la gratitude, ou alors c’est très discret. Au contraire, aux Etats-Unis, c’est presque un devoir moral, une marque d’adaptation sociale, même. Et puis, les remerciements sont toujours plus expressifs.
Garance, quand tu auras un bébé, je lui enverrai un petit cadeau juste pour recevoir cette Thank you note!! Elle est trop belle!
Gorgeous photo of your invitations. They look very classy, unique and exquisite. It would be great if lots more people used this traditional method – and maybe even use sealing wax on the envelope to really complete the look!

Voilà le genre de post que j’apprécie beaucoup beaucoup… les photos de cet atelier sont superbes et découvrir des artistes/artisans qui ne travaillent pas forcément dans le milieu de la mode est toujours intéressant. Je suis fan de leur travail définitivement.
En ce qui concernent tes cartes en effet elles sont très belles, de quoi être fière quand tu les envois :p
Je n’ai jamais envoyé ce type de cartes et pour être honnête je n’y ai jamais pensé …, dire un chaleureux “merci” me semble suffisant.
J’adore tout ce qui est papier à lettre, invitations, “thank-you-notes” etc… Lorsque je serai grande et que j’aurai plein d’argent, moi aussi je ferai affaire avec Thunderwing Press!! :D C’est une découverte géniale et merci pour les photos du studio!!
C’est bien simple, j’aime tout ! L’atelier, les papiers simples et raffines, la lumiere douce qui embellit le bois, les presses anciennes, les cadres aux photos surannees.
Nostalgie du temps ou l’on prenait le temps d’ecrire avec un beau stylo a plume…..
J’utilise des Thank You notes depuis que je vis aux U.S. car c’est une belle tradition

– j’ai travaille pdt 7 and dans l’industrie papetiere a Paris, pour des marques comme Canson, Arches ou curious Collection ( calques et papiers metallisés)
– maintenant je vis a vancouver et je vais bientot aller visiter un imprimeur qui travaille avec cette technique de letterpress
– j’adore envoyer des thank you notes, meme si je le fais moins depuis les e- mails…

It’s fantastic! When I worked in an office, I always kept a box of pretty notes in my desk drawer so I could write a quick thank you — for a gift received, a home-cooked dinner, a fab party — even a great haircut. When I’d be traveling on business, I’d tuck a few notecards in my carry-on. I think there’s a real art to writing a great thank you note, especially for a gift. Not just “thank you for a great new pen” — tell her the wonderful stories it will inspire you to write each time you pick it up!

When I go to exhibitions I buy multiples of the most beautiful postcards and store them to use as thank you notes (sent in an envelope). My mother is very strict about thank yous being prompt- we were fined for any not done by the end of Boxing Day after Christmas or within 48 hours of a birthday, visit, dinner etc. They don’t have to be long, but they do matter. I have two goddaughters, much the same age, and one has never sent a thank you letter for any of the many gifts I have sent her (and I feel sad that I never know whether she likes them as she lives far away) while the other has sent notes for everything from the time she was so young they were a wobbly drawn picture and I know that I really appreciate the dialogue and have learned a lot about her and her tastes.

I was raised writing thank-yous on Crane stationery and still use the ladybug cards with red-lined envelopes. It’s become sort of a signature for me. When I’ve tried to branch out people always cry, “But I love the ladybug!”.
Just beautiful! It’s great to know that when many people are keeping in contact via Facebook etc that there are still people making beautiful stationery!
And sorry to be fussy be it’s STATIONERY when it refers to envelopes and writing paper and it’s stationAry when something is standing still.

L’atelier de ce couple me fait complètement rêver…. Je suis une grande fan de papier et je suis d’acord avec Isa sur un papier super – le Curious metallic collection – de Arjowiggins qui va du papier calque aux papiers plus lourds dans des teintes subtiles et irisées…
