It’s summer. Real summer. It’s hot out. The days are long and you can be lazy without having to make any excuses. I love it, I love it. Plus, it’s the Fourth of July this week, which means it’s a vacation week in the US. Only Friday, but it (finally!) feels like time is slowing down.
Here are a few of the things I like to do in the summer…
– Imagine that summer is forever.
– Use oil everywhere. Yep, in the summer, I switch and use oils for everything. I put oil in my hair, on my body, on my nails, everywhere. All that matters is that it makes my skin feel like satin and makes me feel like I’m on vacation. So they have to smell like summer.
Right now, I’m using three kinds :
Darphin Huile Nourrissante Toucher Satin for the body.
L’Oréal Professionnel Mythic Oil for my hair.
NARS Monoi for everything else.
– Eat fruit all day.
– Walk around my neighborhood after work. With a friend, or with my man, walking around the Village at the end of the day is amazing. We sit on the steps of a brownstone, spend hours chatting, it’s soooo nice.
– Drink rosé. Just because rosé proves it’s summer (the rest of the time, I prefer red wine).
– Make new friends. It’s strange how people relax in the summer. They’re more open, they take their time. It would be so nice if it were like that all the time.
– Go around with a huge bag and never take anything out of it and end up finding weird things in it at the end of the year like sand, toothpaste, a telephone number with no name, a pair of panties, etc. End up with hernia.
– Rotate between about five outfits: three “daytime”, one “evening”, one “beach”. That’s it. Relax about my wardrobe.
– Spend the summer checking the summer sales.
– Sleep all day with the window open, telling myself: “Aaaah it’s so pretty out…I’ll just stay in one more hour…”
– Make huge plans for back to school, as if September were a faraway land full of promise.
– Keep wearing the same sandals as in 2013, 2012, 2011, 2010. Think about all the memories of vacations I’ve gone on with them (even the time when my bottle of monoi oil spilled all over them – and my sandals absorbed ALL of it, protecting my clothes from catastrophe and giving my sandals a deep hydrating treatment that made them look great. Ok, so maybe they changed color, so what?) (ok yeah, that’s the downside of oils).
– Freak out about having to wear a swimming suit again Ah no, sorry, I just don’t like it. Not in the list.
– Wake up with the sun, around 6:30, take my time eating breakfast and still have time left before starting my day.
– Drink some beer on account of this is the World Cup.
– Love the sun, but walk in the shade.
– Get my watercolors and notebooks out. Dry flowers in them. Paint in them and write down all my big after-summer plans.
– Read.
– Make lists.
– Daydream.
– Go on vacation!!!
… This summer, I’m going on a tour through Italy, Greece, and Spain. I can’t wait!!! What are you doing this summer? Do you have any plans?

Never, ever, ever has the idea occurred to me to make plans for September at the BEGINNING of the summer.
Usually the end of summer sneaks up to me and I am caught empty-handed (empty-brained, rather).

Ah oui l’été! S’il voulait bien se manifester à Paris, ça serait pas plus mal, car c’est ma saison préférée. Je rêve de petites robes et de sandales. Pour l’instant on ne fait qu’en rêver.
Bonnes vacances.
Je n’aime pas tellement l’été depuis que je vis en Espagne.
Il dure des mois (au moins 5 mois sans voir l’ombre d’un nuage poindre à l’horizon). Et je souffre de la chaleur (grosse fatigue). Donc personnellement j’aime plutôt les demi saisons et j’adore les hivers froids et enneigés (la scandinavie me manque)
Pour mes vacances: retours aux origines avec un mois en France dans mon cher Sud-Ouest, une virée dans la Valle del Jerte en Espagne les week-ends ( le plus beau lieu du monde au printemps quand les cerisiers sont en fleurs) et en septembre si le travail le permet quelques jours à Menorca au Baleares.
Trop cool, moi je suis en vacances en ce moment chez mes parents en Ardèche, je lézarde en faisant le ramadan (et oui on a pas choisi la date, mais cava c’est cool), je lis je fais le ménage je pense a ce que je vais manger le soir, et sinon moi aussi je planifie septembre, normalement ma rentrée prochaine je la fais a marseille, je me languis trop. Trop bien ton trip estival, l’Italie me donne aussi trop envie, est-ce qu’on aura la chance de voir de magnifique cliché ? Très belle illustration Garance.

yes summer is the best! I always feel that is is too short even though I live in Greece…
…and speaking of Greece, which places are you visiting? We can give you suggestions; p.e some of the less touristy islands like Folegandros or Amorgos or the Small Cyclades complex. Its like heaven there, so calming, everything is white and blue… Sun sea white houses and rocks. And great food!
And who knows maybe I will even bump into you. That would be an amazing surprise!

For me Summer means super long days (in the north of Germany now we have aroun 17 hours of daylight!!! To compensate the mere 5 hours of daylight in Winter, I guess…) and going back to Spain to visit my family and friends, drink liters of gazpacho and enjoy my hometown, Madrid.

En attendant août et mes traditionnelles 3 semaines de vacances en Sicile dans la belle-famille (enfin seulement dans la maison qu’on occupe seuls… le pied), été stress au boulot avec la perspective d’un plan de licenciement pour la rentrée… bref, je m’évade déjà beaucoup en lisant ton blog par exemple.
Le meilleur de nos vacances: s’asseoir sur le balcon le soir, un verre de limoncello ou un peu de sorbet citron à la main, les enfants dorment dans la chambre à côté et regarder les étoiles, commenter ce qui se passe dans la rue (en Sicile, tout se passe le soir et dehors) et surtout refaire le monde et préparer l’à venir!

Garance, you inspired me to go to Corsica, so I am spending the first week of August there! Two weeks later, I go to the south of Spain to Malaga.
As a Londoner, my weekends are spent swimming and lazing at the ladies pond in Hampstead Heath.
I agree with all your thoughts on summer, especially having about having three outfits max, using only oils (coconut oil) everywhere, eating fruit all day, waking up early…bliss.

for me summer is drinking buckets of rosé , walking in the hot cities, lingering at sidewalk bars, gardening , making bouquets of dahlias , cooking for friends with loud music , road trips with a friend in Northern California and LA for 10 days , not going to the hairdresser , getting my feet done and wearing bermudas , a bikini top instead of a bra and hawaiian shirts all day.
and 5 days on the beach ….
Spain ? I am Spanish ….where in Spain are you going to ? Spain is the best ! everyone goes to Italy and France and Spain remains to be discovered

Garance, if you get near Venice, just prolongue toward my home country – beautiful Slovenia. It’s the only country in the world with LOVE in it’s name. And there are several reasons for it. :)
Summer is great here for just in one day you can enjoy the Alps and the Adriatic sea while tasting great food together with a glass of rosé produced in one of our wine regions. It’s also my choice of summer drinks.

I remember getting off the train a few stops early one night and walking the rest of the way home. It was a warm mid summer night and as I passed the park there was a person singing opera in there. A few of us stopped and crossed over into the park to listen. We couldn’t see her, which made the sound even more beautiful. We had our own private outdoor concert that night in July. It was Perfect. I’ll never forget it.

Ma résolution pendant ces vacances : faire du sport. Alors j’ai décidé de me mettre au yoga car je me suis dis que ça pouvais être super sympa de prendre le temps d’étirer son corps au bord de la piscine. Et puis boire beaucoup de smoothies en lisant des magazines. C’est un bon plan, non ?

As part of your future trips may I suggest Beirut, Lebanon? It is beyond beautiful there, and it is highly underrated! In the summer it is sweltering, (I’m warning you now), but in the fall and spring the air is fresh and cool, while still having saltwater notes in it. Just a thought….Au revoir!

We will be going also to Mykonos, Delos in July 10th & 11th and would love to meet with you! Consider visiting Delos! It is an important archaiological place! There are amazing landscapes in Greece and sailing in the islands (e.g., around Cyclades or in the Ionian sea) could be a unique experience!
I am based in Crete and Chania is a very charming city. Next time do consider to visit us here.
(You will probably also discover several similarities between Corsica and Crete. )
Ah mais non… Pourquoi Mykonos?
Il y a des îles beaucoup plus belles et, je sais pas… uniques ici en Grèce! J’habite à Athènes et j’étude à Corfou et à mon avis des îles comme Mykonos sont si “glamorous” qu’elles deviennent kitsch.
Ce n’est pas important, tu vas adorer le soleil, la mer et la cuisine greque!

Chez nous en France (en tout cas chez moi), autant l’ambiance de l’été était réellement au beau fixe il y a une ou deux semaines, autant là il ne fait plus très chaud et le soleil joue un peu à cache cache. Et c’est très bête parce que j’habite à côté de l’océan et je ne rêve que d’une chose : sauter dans les vagues!! Et puis faire des soirées barbecue et paella (ah non, ça je l’ai déjà fait hier soir), des bain de minuit (ça aussi j’adore et je l’ai fait quand le soleil tapait encore sur mon visage), faire du vélo (les cheveux au vent, rien de plus agréable), faire un feu de camp sur la plage, lire sur mon hamac, prendre soin de mon blog… voilà tout ce que j’aime faire l’été. Et puis comme toi, j’adore prévoir tout un tas de trucs pour la rentrée et faire une tonne de liste sur mes projets, comme si septembre annonçait pour moi un nouveau départ!! C’est vrai, quand on est encore au lycée comme moi, on sort de 2/3 mois de vacances (soit une très longue pause qui nous déconnecte complètement des cours), et rentrée = nouvelle classe = nouvelles rencontres = nouveau rythme = nouvelle garde-robe, il ne faut pas oublier!! Autant l’été je suis assez cool sur la façon dont je m’habille, autant en septembre je mets le paquet et rien ne m’obsède plus que mes achats de la rentrée!!

Je viens d’Ibiza et ça fait 3 ans que j’habite à Paris. C’est dur, la mer et le soleil me manquent tellement…
J’adore y aller au printemps, pas de touristes et il fait toujours beau!
Cet été, pas le choix! j’y vais fin juillet. Je me sent un peu envahie mais il y a toujours des petites criques et endroits calmes où aller. Je te recommande de visiter le nord de l’ile, San Juan, Santa Inés… Si tu as besoin de renseignements n’hésites pas à m’écrire! :)

To tell the truth, I do not like summer.
Quel plaisir de lire tes articles, toujours bien écrits. Et celui-ci fait qu’on se croirait déjà en vacances, les pieds dans l’eau ou en rêvassant en restant toute une journée sans rien faire. Prendre le temps, et s’arrêter de longues heures en terrasse prendre un verre de vin et regarder les touristes à Paris :)
