Oh man. I was doing a shoot yesterday* for a summer style story**, and right there in the middle of a stall of gargantuan shoes, I saw them.
What did I see?
Oh but yes, that is the question.
Hmmmm.
Just wait…
Think about it at least two seconds!
So what we will first criticize, and then hate, and then give a second glance, and then reconsider, and then finally steal from all the stores and no one will be able to find them anywhere anymore: clogs.
Clogs!
Red, black, neon, with heels, with clasps, minimalist, sophisticated, with a mustache, there was one for every taste. Only thing they had in common? Their wooden soles and their… Grrrrr… Their return to the farm look that grrrrr…. I’m not into at all, but really, not at all. The worst is still the clogs with heels. I’d rather a clog with a mustache than a clog with heels.

No!
No, clogs, vade retro clogs, you’re too ugly. I don’t want anything to do with you.
I’m not going to give in. I’m staying right here. You aren’t for me. No, not even you little Céline clog. No, not you either, don’t even ask you weirdo Miu Miu clog. And not even you camelia-ized Chanel. And even you, Vuitton monogrammed clog, you’re just too grotesque for me, looking like you do, I’d call you high-art, à la Marc. Okay, away you go! Out!
Okay, so what do you think, with this kind of determination, you think I’ll make it all the way to spring without a pair of clogs?

Ahahahaha… made me laugh…. you know why? Coz I was going crazy window shopping via the internet for “wood+platform+wedge” for days now. I am really looking forward to getting a pair… saw the Celine ones and I really like it because there’s a lesser chance I’d fall on my face when I wear them than the toothpick stilleto heels :(
Maybe I just need more practice wearing the really thin heels. Ugh… but it hurts :(
I really dislike clogs, doesn’t anyone remember the 90’s and when they were popular? yuck, next year it is going to be jelly shoes again? So many other beautiful shoes to wear

I now have faint memories of having my photo taken standing in a giant clog in Amsterdam! Only the Dutch can wear clogs methinks!

Aha!! Garance petite fleur de maquis… J’en ai déjà des sabots à talons en bois. De cet hiver. En cuir avec un talon. Oui madame. Et oui au début ça m’a fait bizarre, mais en fait depuis je les adore. ça a un côté 40’s assez sexy, alternatif et élégant en même temps. Quand tu travailles dans un bureau, c’est l’option jeune à l’escarpin de base!

Tu le sais maintenant, je suis MJ addict… mais les sabots Vuitton à moustache, j’ai pas pu !
Je me dis que c’est moi qui ne vois pas assez en avant, que j’en aurai envie bientôt… mais non rien à faire, beurk et pouha.
Le pire, tu as raison, ce ne sont pas les moustachus, ils sont presque poilants. le pire du pire, ce sont les talons !

Même Scholl en fait des sabots à talons pour répondre à la demande… depuis un moment ils en font.
D’ailleurs c’est bien simple, j’ai des sabots (honte!), mais des sabots Scholl, modèle hauteur normale) en feutre épais anthracite, à mettre l’hiver avec grosses chaussettes de montagne dégoulinantes colorées, pour rester à la maison…
A la campagne (où je ne suis pas), quand tu tombes sur une bestiole, t’es bien contente de pouvoir enlever un sabot…
Donc je serais moins vindicative que toi sur ce coup, je snoberais juste les ersatz de sabots Miu Miu, MJ ou Chanel pour dire :
“Mes sabots, c’est Scholl ou rien !”
Acheter ses shoes en pharmacie a un côté rigolo et snob à la Boris Vian, on ? non.

Clogs … something former boyfriends/husbands can be pictured in. Clunky and heavy; really hard to dangle a pretty foot – one could crunch up a nearby shin. The best are good for displays, I think. Flowers instead of feet inside would be lovely. Love love love your blog and the sketches.

Hmmm je ne suis pas très fan, à la limite les Chanel, mais les escarpins ou les sandales terminent la jambe beaucoup plus harmonieusement, je trouve.

I can’t help but love them – I have a major spot for shoes that are any combination of awkward, masculine, unsexy, unexpected, nerdy. all of which describe clogs brilliantly. No, no, no! It hurts to see something like that being sent down the runway by geniuses like Karl and Marc…maybe, just maaaaybe, they can get us to reconsider for a moment, but no matter how much I adore them (especially all things Chanel – including those tattoos!), I will never give in. This is one of those things that we will look back on (if we hate them now, how do you think we’ll feel when the trend is over??) one season later and immediately regret. And the LV ones are simply unforgivable. Stubby heels, clogs, AND weird furry poofs? I might just die.

J’ai un mauvais souvenir de mes sabots/mules à talons que je portais il y a plus de 10 ans, je me suis un jour vilainement cassée la figure avec, la tête la première sur le bitume, et je me suis retrouvée avec des éraflures et le dessous de l’oeil bien noir… tout le monde a pensé que mon mec m’avait frappée, ce qu’il a moyennement apprécié… Tout ça pour dire que j’ai un peu de mal avec ce retour du sabot à talons, et que je suis d’accord avec Anne de Chic and Geek, si je succombe à nouveau, ce sera pour des Scholls!

I definitely agree with you. I just can’t stand clogs. Everyone was raving about the chanel clogs, but they’re so ugly.
But they are so fun! I saw a pair on sale at DVF yesterday, and miu miu imitation ones in Zara. I’m going to run run run and buy myself a pair before everyone has one. This reminds me of what happened with the flat gladiator sandals. They. Were. Everywhere. It made me nauseous. Only because I jumped on the bandwagon too late.

But it is interesting to watch fashion recycle itself. My aunt kept her clogs from the 70’s and wore them again throughout the 90’s. I didn’t save my clogs from the 90’s, and have no plans to revisit the trend.

J’ai toujours bien aimé les sabots, j’ai des vieilles Chloé, plusieurs, avec talons bois mais des sabots revisités. C’est marrant parce je me disais qu’aujoud’hui j’allais passer chez Chanel voir si il avait reçu LES sabots que j’adore alors pour moi je suis déjà conquise. J’en ai un peu marre des talons de 12 et des Arty-shoes qu’on voit partout (même chez Zara, toujours eux). Alors le sabot c’est frais…

OOOhh. on en avait déjà parlé à l’époque du festival de la mode de Hyères il y a deux ans, mais ça n’avait pas vraiment pris… C’est le genre de tendance “ugly”, mais… qui trotte dans la tête et à force de retourner le truc dans tous les sens, a voir plein plein de photos et y penser non stop, on finit par se dire “c’est immonde, oui, mais je crois que ça pourrait marcher si je le portais avec ça, et ça..”.
Le genre d’achats “regrets inclus”. On sait (mais on se cache) qu’on va obligatoirement le regretter d’ici quelques années et qu’on se frappera la tête contre un mur pour se punir de tant de mauvais goût.

Mon mec m’a ramené des Ugs en octobre, ça faisait 4 ans que je résistai,et ben je les ai pas quitté de l’hiver…parce que 1 on est vachement bien dedans, et que finalement c’est mignon!!!

J’aime beaucoup ton dessin à la moue contrariée.
Après la petite robe légère à fleurs, le maquillage nude, la coiffure belle des champs et les foulards à carreaux autour du cou ou dans les cheveux, on aurait dû se douter que les sabots allaient débarquer en ville…Mais pourquoi on a rien vu venir ?
Heu…. autant des talons compensés en bois je veux bien, j’aime bien même, autant des SABOTS, là je dis yeark ! C’est juste moche ! :) (à me souvenir avant de craquer un jour sur des sabots hehe)

I can even accept that they’ll work in a photoshoot, when properly styled, but they aren’t classy enough for you. Just not good enough for garance, in my opinion. And the comparison between the clog trend and the crocs and uggs is sooo right.

Enfin, je pense que je m’en passerais, de toute facon j’ai le pieds tellement fin que si j’ai pas de bride pour me tenir à la cheville je perds mes pompes (et oui je trafique mes escarpins pour pas me retrouver pieds nus en cas de sprint pour chopper le bus). THE SABOTS WON’T HAVE ME !!!

Les sabots je trouve ça moche, vraiment. Mais bon je disais la même chose des compensées et je viens de m’acheter la paire de bottines lacées compensées Zara (en solde oui, ça rattrape un peu le coup ??). Et je les adore…
Donc bref hein comme on dit “Fontaine…” parce à grand coup de photos dans les magazines / affichages et de contamination bloguesque on va bien toutes y succomber à ces horribles sabots !

I am not by any means a paticularly fashionalble girl, i just do not possess that inate style that you and the beautiful people you shoot seem to!
However, even I, the rather dull, unfashionable, lost, english chick can see how wrong clogs are!
I had a pair of navy blue suede ones when i was ten years old, i loved them with all my hard despited them being unbelievably uncomfortable… fortuantely i have moved on since then!
It upsets me that i will now have to witness this trend being poorly translated onto the high street and we will have to look at even uglier shoes :(

Je trouve qu’il y a un petit côté “foraine” dans le port du sabot à talons qui me plait bien parfois ! peut être parceque je voulais être foraine quand j’étais petite !
L’image d’une petite fille jouant dehors fière de porter des sabots, moi j’étais accro quand j’étais petite j’adorai déjà le bruit des talons et du bois sur le sol. Après je pense pas que 10 ans après je vais encore me laisser tenter mais on ne sait jamais :)
Garance – je suis super fan de ton site depuis des années, en particulier j’adores tes illustrations si belles. Je me demande quel genre de stylo tu te sert? Je n’arrive jamais à faire cette variation des lignes dans mes dessins!

Moi, je trouve que c’est les talons ultracompensés qui gachent ces sabots dont j’aime le côté bohème chic… J’ai regardé, pour l’instant je n’en ai pas vu une seule paire que je pourrais porter… Je rêve de trouver des shoes comme sur la pub de Princesse TAMTAM de la saison automne hiver 09 (l’ensemble de lingerie avec les éléphants oranges) escarpins beige naturel taupé bordés de clous à la manière des sabots, topissimes si quelqun sait où les trouver je suis intéressée… bien qu’elles soient un peu hautes…. je pense qu’il y aurait eu un réel créneau avec le sabot version plus soft…

I am sorry Garance, but I must disagree, I find the Celine’s absolutely splendid; I had not realized until now that I have always had a love for wooden shoes. I have never owned a pair myself, but drooled from afar (the cap toed Miu Miu’s are a definite exception, they are heinous!).

The only clogs to get are from Swedish Hasbeens: http://www.swedishhasbeens.com/ I wore mine all last Summer, and even in Autumn with short socks.
I hate clogs. I do really like leather x wood combo though, and will be running around in Westwood rocking horse ballerinas as soon as the snow melts up here in Finland.

I guess its all depending on were you live. I am native Swedish and I grew up wearing clogs, it wasnt spring until they took away all the sand from the streets and you got that ok from yout mummy to put the clogs on, so marvelous…..!

L’unique chose horrible avec les sabots c’est qu’ils soient “trendy” maintenant. J’adore les sabots depuis toujours, depuis mon enfance et j’ai toujours eu, mais l’idée de les utiliser maintenant m’effraie parce que justement c’était quelque chose de très demodé qui me faisait sentir en dehors des envies des “filles à la mode”. Oh Garance, I’m with you on this. I can’t even begin to rationalize clogs. No matter which angle I try to analyze from … not cute, not sexy. Just not.
J’ai commandé des Hasbeens sur le site suédois il y a 3 semaines, mais fermés devant et derrière, donc pas vraiment des sabots… Je me souviens avec tendresse et nostalgie des looks des années 1975-1976, sabots Kerstin Adolfson rouge avec chaussettes de montagne écru, très Madame Olson, ou plutôt très magazine 100 Idées, pour celles qui ont connu ce génial et très créatif magazine (groupe Marie-Claire) de couture, tricot, bricolage, etc.
HA, oui!!!! J’ai achete les Pierre hardi pour Gap et je ne les mets jamais.

I AGREE! Clogs always look cheap to me. I’m broke so I need shoes that look more expensive than they are…not the opposite! Clogs should be left in the 90s, or maaaybe to teenagers.
I have never been a fan of clogs until recently when I started seeing photos of Swedish Hasbeens on fashion blogs. I now of course want a pair. I think if you see a photo of something over and over again it totally brainwashes you into thinking you can’t live another day without it. As to what to wear with clogs, I have no clue!
At he begining I saw the clogs and I say” No way, I’m not going to be my mom” (she used them in home) But I don’t know, maybe I’m weak, but now I’m in love with them, not with all them (I hate the LV ones) I’m in love with the Chanel clogs, Very in love. But just with them. The other day I try a pair of clogs, and they look quite good, but I prefer the Chanel ones.

Je sens que ces sabots, ça va faire comme pour les cuissardes.
1ère étape : pas question, ça craint trop
2e étape : ah, finalement, sur certaines, ça rend pas mal, alors pourquoi pas ?
3e étape : le problème, c’est que pour une paire de chaussures “juste pour le fun”, mettre 500 euros (ou plus), quand même, c’est abusé. Voyons dans les prix abordables …
4e étape : quand c’est pas cher, et après essayage, c’est bof ; quand ça a l’air vraiment bien, c’est trop cher, donc on passe rapidement à la
5e étape : de toute façon, cette mode stupide ne va durer qu’une saison – alors on respire un coup et on attend que ça passe

J’avoue j’ai déjà porté des sabots… pour ma défense je devais avoir 9 ans, ils étaient rose et en daim, pas de talon heureusement (et puis à 9 ans, difficile de convaincre ma mère de me laisser porter des talons lol) mais je les A-DO-RAIS! J’avais tellement un look fille des champs avec ma petite robe à fleurs! De là à en reporter aujourd’hui, pas sûr par contre… À voir! :D
GARANCE THANK YOU, I don’t think I’ve ever felt so driven to comment on a blog post in the last year and a half. These clogs are terrible, and I’ve seen them EVERYWHERE. This is the fashion industry just exploiting its power, showing that it can make people like anything. I mean, if it got behind the fitness shoes, I’m sure people would be wearing them. I’m also 100% against those.
I have a pair of butterscotch Danskos! I love these ‘Danish shoes’…Don’t hate haha! :) As for fashionable and/or trendy clogs…hmm, I agree. No fur, no bejeweled-ness s’il vous plait!

As a student I lived in clogs. Not fashion clogs, but old brown charity shop ones. Once you get used to them they are comfy. For mooching around and drinking too much beer in they are great, and you are far enough from the floor to escape wet feet in shared bathrooms *shudder*. For fashion…I don’t think so. Not only are they on the front of Vogue UK’s March issue but right at the back on their last word…. “Clog Dance:” this season, the wooden-soled shoe has been fully diversified for spring.”…the images accompanying this are ugly in every possible way. Think they have to “diversify” into pretty for me to be wearing any this spring.

Clogs..
from all the fashion shows that i have seen, i really hated all the clogs; be it Chanel, Miu Miu and others.. except the LV clogs! i do not like clogs in general, but there was something about the LV ones that i couldn’t keep my eyes off!
Also i am not a person to follow trends, so i don’t really care if clogs are in or not, and also clogs have never really been in the history of my wardrobe, or in my part of the world alot, so i had no feelings for them what so ever.
i guess that’s why when i saw the LV clogs, i didn’t really see them as OMG more clogs, rather i saw them as very intelligent SHOES.. true, they might still be clogs, but to me they are just another type of shoe.. which is good because im freed from the fact that they are CLOGS so i can sort of see beyond that ..
i love the little circle-y heels, color & material combination .. the re-interpretation of clogs and taking them to a whole new level .. i love the little bold details on the shoes like the little accessory-like things dangling from some of the boots.. the way that they are a mesh between sandals and clogs .. they’re just fascinating to me and i believe it is a smart way of turning clogs over and seeing them in a new way .. taking parts of clogs, but adding some parts of other shoes into it . .
mind you i did dislike some of them from the show, but i believe they deserve another look, not as just some other clog, but as SHOES
and yes they’re not everyone’s cup of tee! Clogs are NOT mine, but LV shoes are :-)
oh, i also like some of the “mustache” ones, even though i never saw them as mustaches .. but now that you mention it, its funny!

okay. i hear you garance. but i think of them like boots. they are the summer version of a boot. you can just slip them on. they look nice and casual like you aren’t trying to hard. but they must have some attitude. i like the shape of the miu miu clog but i would prefer it with tooled brown leather so it looked nice and hippie-ish. now that would look kick-ass, wouldn’t it?
then again, i also like the margiela tabi. so take my shoe comments with a grain of salt.

seeing all the high fashion with clogs , looks good for certain looks ( bohemian ) , ultimately it’s a non- high fashion item to be worn and un- glamours.
Few years ago was scholl sandles, now dutch clogs, whethe is an inspiration for the fashion designers or revival trendy fashion… .it’s actually pretty horrible shoes to go for.

Have to admitted that i did have those pairs before when i was teenages, they aren’t comfortable as the way it looks and not as hot as the chunky heels such as Nicolas Kirkwood.. ( oh the latest green ones is the must – have one)

Oh Garance! Your timing is perfect/terrible. I went vintage shopping today and bought myself a pair of clogs: they were $10, so I figure, why not? I got them home and thought.. hm.. maybe this was a mistake. So I go online to get some ideas on how to style them, to see if they can be salvaged, and after a quick google image search, I headed straight over here to see if you had ever written anything about clogs… and this is what I found! And mine have heels! I’ll still have to see if they ever make it out of my closet.
You can hold out on this one Garance….it’s your moral duty to the world of fashion! Clogs suck! Believe me I live in Berkeley and I have to look at them EVERY day. Keep the faith NO CLOGS
What a divided audience! I looove clogs and have been wearing them for the last few years. They bring back memories of growing up in the 70s when the whole family wore them. At Christmas I got a shipment of three pairs of hasbeens – such glorious colours – the mustard is my favourite.
O dear!! The Mui Mui posted by Helen is like a combination of Uggs and Clogs – if they’d added plastic moulding somehow as well it would be the evil trinity of shoes. Please resist!!
I’m sorry – but J’ADORE CLOGS. I bought a pair a year ago and I have been wearing them since, and getting SO MANY compliments on them. Now they are poised to make a wider comeback I suppose.
They are not at all in the same realm as Uggs and Crocs.

I used to dislike them, couldn´t find anything remotely pretty about them. But then the Chanel clogs came and hypnotized me, bad clogs, and now I like them.
I love clogs! I have 3 pair in my closet that I’m excited to bring back out! One is Michael Kors brown leather with brass trim – pretty!
Summer is ending here in Argentina and let me tell you clogs were HUGE this year. I was too a little bit aprehensive about them but to my shock they actually WORK and, even though I managed to finish summer without getting a pair, I’m a bit sad I did.

I bought two pairs of high-heel clogs (mushroom-y green and black) – woven leather with brass studs around them – I can’t walk in them but I love them. And, making things worse, it is winter so I am wearing them with socks! Awful! But, it makes me laugh.
garance, so true! i just had that moment this morning, when i saw a photo of alexa chung wearing them, so confidently and looking ever so great despite the clunky foot apparel. i said no to heeled booties, and now i own about 5, i said never to tights, and, yes, *runs and hides* i can’t live without them. but clogs, i swear i will not succumb. i’m standing with you on this fight!
C’est trop drôle !!! Je n’ose pas le dire mais je le dis quand même… il y a quelques années (en 2002 ou 2003 je crois) j’ai eu ma petite crise sabot, j’avais craqué sur des sabots Sonia Rykiel que j’adorais mais tout le monde me regardait très bizarement surtout à Bordeaux ! Depuis, je me suis calmée et trouve ça horrible mais entre nous c’est chaud et confort mais MOCHE ! xxx
I just got back to Norway from Paris, and i was kinda dissapointed concerning the weather. it was cold and it even snowed! but i guess that’s Paris at winter time. I can see the problem of shooting floral dresses in a snowstorm. I saw a couple by the Eiffel tower who tried to take their wedding pictures in the rain! it didnt look succesful.
I just have to tell you that i envy you for living in Paris! It’s just so beautiful! and all the clothes and the fashion and the beautiful stores!!! We got one Louis Vuttion store here in Oslo… And that’s it. I got to see Chanel and Balmain ect live!! It was a thrill! That was the best about the whole trip; walking down Avenue Montaigne and inside Printemps.
Oh and btw; i LOVE your blog! its awesome! :)

and, I don’t know, maybe I’ve been indoctrinated, but I think stylish clogs aren’t that bad! They look feminine(if with heels), but yet strong, and it gives me the feeling that you’re one of those nice and pretty farmgirls.
Don’t be mad, you just have to look at it at every angle!
But, without the transformation of a great designer, clogs are really ugly, indeed.
Phew. I thought I was the only one that thought clogs were hideous!! I wore them as a child, but never thought I would want to wear them again! We should start an anti-clog blog, hahah!

I’m very late but what a great topic, anything so divided between hate and love has got to have something. I determinedly have stayed away from clogs-those Danskos that are so ugly. Every now and then I’d see a picture of what I thought was a pretty clog, with a heel, but I didn’t let myself go there. I love LUV the Chanel clogs, it’s that chunky-ugly-high heel thing that to me, makes a leg look prettier. High and low, 70’s, yeh yeh. I want me some clogs and soon.

I also hate clogs. My mother wears Danskos almost every single day (despite having a wide array of very beautiful flats and loafers). I’d rather eschew comfort than look like Heidi.
The last time i had a pair of clogs on was I was 7 years old. It was the early 70s then and i’d use them with my bell bottomed pants, my polka dotted mini dress, my favourite blue pinafore mini dress; everything. It’s had its time and remains a pleasant and fun fashion memory.
No repeats, PLEASE…. and not at this age!!

Bref , cet article m’a interpelé , car à la base les sabots sont un peu ma hantise , ma mère vient d’en acheter des artisanaux avec pour motif du léopard rouge .. vision quasi cauchemardesque !
mais voila en observant les Chanel de plus près je dois admettre que c’est très tentant , et coup de bol dans un magasin qui fait braderie dans ma ville j’en vois des San marina dignes de ces fameux chanel , alors OUI les sabots j’ai craqué !

Je suis étudiante en art plastique (capes dans 1mois!!aarrghh!) et j’AdOrE vos illustrations, le trait et le graphisme que vous donné à vos dessins (entre croquis croqués et légèreté <3)…aussi j'aimerai savoir qu'elle sont les matériaux que vous utilisés? (feutre fin, crayon HB…) et comment vous réussissez à appliquer la couleur de manière si subtile? (encre?, lavis, aquarelle?!…)
Je vous remercie d'avoir pris le temps de me lire (moi le tout petit message coincé entre les 200 et des poussières autres ^^)…C'est pour cela que je serai d'autant plus heureuse si vous trouvez le temps de me répondre!

So sorry to disagree with most everyone. CLASSIC swedish/danish clogs are wonderful. I have two pairs and everytime I wear them everyone asks where they are from. Most any shoe looks great if it is done correctly. I do agree that the designer versions are a bit ridiculous….
Clogs are okay for my sisters, who are nurses and are on their feet for 12 hours in a hospital. Otherwise….no, no, no.
I agree with you for the most part Garance my darling… but there is something evil at work with clogs that somehow make you want them the way you would want Uggs and sweatpants… an evil, evil energy… lol!

sabots, huggs….. c’est tout pareil sauf que dans les huggs, nous avons chaud, c’est confortable alors que les sabots, nousne pouvons pas courir avec, sautiller à pieds joints et puis c’est pas beau! la mode, parfois et trop souvent à mon gout, fait n’importe quoi !!!

I agree with those above me that only one thing is worse than clogs–Crocs. They are the ugliest thing to happen to fashion aside from the all-fur boots tucked into sweat pants.

By the way, I always love your illustrations (I am a fledgling illustrator as well as a model in Tokyo). But this post reminded me of when I was little.
I had to take a test to get in to this Kindergarten, and one of the questions was ‘What is a clock?” For whatever reason my mother used to style me with little black wooden clogs, so when that question was asked, me, being about 5 or 6 years old, answered, “You wear them on your feet.” Needless to say the woman giving the test was quite perplexed, until my mother clarified the confusion.

I think I would happily wear clogs over…UGG boots! Here in Canada it’s rare to see a girl NOT wearing UGGs September through May! I would be a bit more exciting to see mustach clogs most of the year!
