I’m always so inspired by those who are able to share their stories and emotions with honesty and simplicity and loved Myla Dalbesio’s words about her body and her relationship to the camera.
Myla is considered a “plus” model (I hate that word and usually never mention when we shoot “plus” models, which we do all the time – just without making a thing about it, but for this story I think it’s important to say it) and has done campaigns for Calvin Klein and many others. She’s awesome, she’s real, and we all really love her at the studio.
That’s why today we wanted to share this with you.

My first nudes were shot by Roe Etheridge. This was years ago, 2008, before he had shot Gisele and Hilary Rhoda, Balenciaga campaigns and Italian Vogue. It was before he had ever shot nudes, in fact, something we chuckled about together in the studio that day. He said we were popping each other’s cherries, and I blushed and laughed and ate a piece of pizza. I had primped and pruned for this day, had shaved my pubic hair into what I deemed the most acceptable formation, present but not overpowering, had buffed and tweezed and clipped and brushed, but was completely powerless to pizza.
I’ve never been one of those girls who fasts for days before an underwear shoot, and it turns out that nudes were no different. In the end, it turned out that very little was different about shooting nude for me, except that I might enjoy it even more than being clothed. The thing about nudes is it’s about you, truly. Not about the shoes and the designer credits and the expensive location. It’s not about your personal style, or where the lines of the garment are hitting you, and if the shirt is unflattering to your waistline, or do the pants make your calves look fat. That’s what I think about when I get dressed, when I am photographed in clothes.
But nudes are about skin, your skin, your freedom and essence and form. It’s about pure creation, about being alive and celebrating your body, yourself. It’s about movement and shapes, about light and environment, and freedom, again and again. Shooting nudes helped me to understand and appreciate my body, to see the beauty in it’s perfections and imperfections. Thick thighs, stomach rolls, they balance out against the rest of you. Your body becomes a tool, a medium in itself.
But nudes are about skin, your skin, your freedom and essence and form.
The photos I feel I look the most beautiful in, the ones that are truly me, are the naked ones. The first ones, with Roe in 2008, sipping a diet coke. Laughing in the studio or running through the woods with Ryan Mcginley, curled up on a couch next to a fireplace by Pamela Hanson. There’s no pretense. I’m not playing a character, I’m not selling anything. It’s truthful in a way I can only seek to be in real life.
Shooting nude taught to me appreciate other women’s bodies in a new way as well. Taught me to photograph them myself, to love the porcelain skinned knobby knees and the deep brown curves of a stomach. Soft, pink breasts and dark arm hair, and dimples and marks and bruises and bums. The things that make my body different, the things that make us all the same.
I primp less now, the shape and size of my pubic hair be damned. The photographer is lucky I even shaved my armpits. But the feeling stays the same. It’s the comfort in knowing my own strength and beauty, and being able to share it with someone else. To lend the use of my most successful medium to a fellow creator, and to have them respect and understand what they’re being given. And this feeling transcends the studio, transcends the moments in front of the camera. To understand, to love and respect your body is to love yourself. To respect yourself is to demand respect from others, to build healthy and supportive relationships. To find your peace.

Thank you for this and for your thoughts on that iniquitous word “plus”. We should be defined by who we are and what we achieve in life, not by (I think you say in USA) a “cookie cutter” ideal. Brava.
I miss the days when models were normal size. And grownups.
Today’s plus size seems to be the size supermodels were 20 years ago!

She is beautiful and i really don’t see the +size she looks to me like the “normal”girl in life the one that didn’t starve herself….she has voluptuous shape and this is a style you love or you don’t love but that’s how you see the woman style at D&G fashion show the image of a woman and not a girls……. like everything else it’s a question of fashion…it’s time to forget the skinny anorexic look that dominate everywhere for the last 10 y..

“Plus-size”, really ? That is ridiculous. How on earth can she be labelled as a “plus-size” model? She simply has the most beautiful body ! I wear a 38 size (french) and I definitively don’t feel “plus size” ^^ ahah
Anyway … love what she says about embrassing our imperfections (even if I don’t see a lot of them on her dreamy naked pictures…) !
I totally agree with LA! How on earth can we even let th agency label her “plus size”?? She wears a normal size and she is 180 cm tall?! Why on earth have we – the consumers – allowed the fashion industry to become fascistic sadists against women?? They are trying to starve women to death before they accept them to be “model size”. So sick!!
I think the new laws in Italy, Spain and Israel (and France?) are good, but it is tragic that we need it. Finding it ok to force women to have a BMI below 18, which have caused the death to several models over the years, is a perversion. Of course it needs to be banned. And the resellers should put more demand on the model agencies to have healthy models and we, the consumers need to start to ban those companies that use severely underweight models in their campaigns. They have shown they have no morals or ethical guidelines so we need to hit them where it hurts them the most: in their wallet.
She’s very real and very inspiring but I think they are talking about size 10 U.S. which is a size 14 UK and size 42 France ? I could be wrong though.
Bonjour … parce que vous dites qu’elle est une femme plus ? elle sera une taille normale 42 italien ( 38 Français ) … Pour vous une femme de taille 42 est une femme ? la majorité des femmes sera plus …J’ai vu des photos d’elle et elle me semble una belle fille normale!

Myla est une size plus ? Je la trouve normale et tres belle. Revenons sur terre et adressons-nous aux femmes que nous cotoyons tous les jours. Je dis bien des femmes, pas des “filles” comme on le lit souvent ici. Est-ce que ceci sous-entend la crainte de vieillir, donc de garder coute que coute l’apparence d’une adolescente ?
Elle est magnifique et super spontanée, elle dégage, j’adore !
Par contre ça me fait super peur qu’elle soit catégorisée plus size. Ca va bien dans la tête des gens du monde de la mode ? Une taille US8, soit un 40 FR ou 44 IT est super commun. Il y a 20 ans les super méga modèles mythiques que même Gisèle c’est de la gnognotte à coté, elles faisaient un 36 FR, pas un -12 filiforme qui ressemble à tout sauf à une femme saine et qui fait baver hommes ET femmes ! (non mais Naomie, Stephanie, Christy, Helena, ohlalaaa)
Ce que je ne comprends pas non plus, c’est appeler une telle femme plus size aux Etats-Unis où il est normal de croiser des personnes de tailles obèses, qui elles sont vraiment plus size (comment nommer leur taille dans ce cas ? hypermega size ?).
Franchement je suis choquée de cette labellisation qui ne fait aucun sens, à part manipuler les états psychologiques de toutes femmes et augmenter le nombre de séances chez le psy (je suis grosse je suis moche => mais non vous êtes normale madame, regardez les stats et les regards des autres sur vous enfin).

plus Size ?! – Elle est juste normale – j’ai lu dans le Elle US qu’elle mettait du 40 en vêtement – Cela n’a rien à voir avec une plus size mais je pense que dans votre univers malgré que vous vous en défendiez, une fille qui fait du 38 est une fille presque normale (une normale fera du 36), celle qui fera du 40 une plus size quant à celle qui fait du 42 sera une mega plus size. Question si vous détestez ce terme plus size pourquoi vous l’utilisez pour la présenter ?

I don’t believe she’s a plus size model, sorry. She’s gorgeous but she’s an in-between model really. I actually read a story on her that claims she doesn’t fit with the “plus” size nor the bony “high fashion” models but I hate to think some in-betweeners use padding to fake-it larger to get work. Having said all that, I’ve been following this blog for years and enjoyed the article for what it is. Just saying
I agree–the protruding collarbones–not a plus size at all.

Myla is gorgeous. And she wears a proper bra! I think it’s a Panache Clara, the gold-black colourway from last season. It’s so nice to see a lady that wears a beattiful cut and sew bra and is (or so I assume) properly fitted. Way to go!
C’est incroyable que cette jeune fille soit considerée comme + Size par l’industrie de la mode…
Pour moi cette fille est mince , parfaitement proportionnée , avec des “atouts” qui feraient passer les mannequins decharnés pour de vulgaires porte-manteaux sans interet…
D’ailleurs , aprés avoir consulté des photos d’elle et avoir demandé un avis masculin , cette fille est carrément plus attirante que les squelettes que l’on a tendance à (trop ) voir sur les podiums.
Enfin bref , il est bien sur évident que chacune d’entre nous ne nait pas avec le même patrimoine génétique , certaines auront tendances à être plus minces , d’autres plus charnues…
Mais de là à considérer une femme magnifique , en pleine santé , avec des formes incroyables , comme une exception ” + Size”…
Il faut vraiment changer les choses !( Et dire aux créateurs de mode d’arreter de faire complexer les femmes avec un IMC normal … je sais de quoi je parle en tant que jeune fille de 24 ans mettant un 38 et lobotomisée depuis mes 15 ans par les magazines féminins … ;) )

Plus sized in “model world” is different than plus sized in ” everyday world” I guess.
Anyway, Myla is selling something, even when naked. She is selling the idea that the brand she works for has a range of sizes available. If she were not selling something: she wouldn’t be photographed. But her feeling around being photographed naked is freeing for her and I’m happy for her in that sense.
J’avoue être rassurée par les commentaires des autres personnes qui comme moi sont étonnées de la voir nommée “plus size”. J’espère vraiment qu’un jour on pourra considérer une fille comme Myla une “normal size” et les mannequins qui défilent aujourd’hui sur la plupart des podiums des “mini-size”. Je pense que la beauté se trouve dans chacune d’entre elles. Oui, les mannequins maigres peuvent aussi être belles, même si une maigreur excessive n’est en aucun cas beau selon moi. Mais le problème survient quand ce sont elles qui semblent être la norme et les seules personnes “belles”. Je peux vous dire qu’ayant 17 ans et cherchant à me sentir bien dans mon corps, ce n’est pas facile d’être tous les jours confrontée aux panneaux publicitaires de mannequins Victoria secret et de penser qu’on doit être aussi mince pour entrer dans les normes de beauté. C’est d’ailleurs pour ça que j’adore ce blog, il nous montre la beauté partout, dans toutes les cultures, avec les morphologies et tous les styles, et surtout le fait que la beauté vient de l’intérieur, et n’est en tout cas pas une histoire de taille! Merci donc à toute l’équipe pour les interviews comme celle-ci et j’espère que vous continuerez comme ça encore longtemps!

Il est très étrange voire contradictoire de faire un post sur la façon LA de vivre le sculpte du corps, l’obsession commune pour toutes personnes sur cette terre d’avoir un corps svelte, sculpté et beau comme vous le faisiez remarquée dans le post sur LA…puis aujourd’hui de mettre en avant un mannequin “plus size” qui fait quoi, un 40 taille EU, et qui me semble représenter ce que sont les femmes réellement aujourd’hui. cette femme est belle, bien proportionnée et surtout en accord avec elle même : c’est surtout qui l’a rend belle et harmonieuse.

Je comprends son point de vue, j’ai posé nue pour un atelier aux Beaux Arts (le dessin d’ailleurs ça pardonne mieux que la photo ;-)) et j’ai beaucoup aimé ça. Et en effet, j’étais là pour exposer mon corps dans sa globalité, et dès la première séance je ne me suis pas trop posé la question d’une épilation au cordeau : je savais que les élèves n’étaient pas là pour traquer le moindre poil mais pour me dessiner, moi tout entière. Et pour l’estime et l’acceptation de soi, c’est un exercice génial – je me suis rarement sentie aussi belle que là, toute nue en plein jour au milieu de 15 personnes.
Plus size ??!!!!????? Alors moi je suis carrément grosse de cirque à côté !!! Non mais ça va pas la tête ??!!???
I suggest a renaming of model classification:
“regular” model = Minus model
and Myla (Krystal, Clementine etc..,) = gorgeous models
How on earth is she PLUS SIZE ??? she’s smoking hot. saw her instagram and I see boobs, abbs, nice bootie… dream body !
