A Beauty Minute with Mayssa Chehata

4 years ago by

What is your morning beauty routine?

I start every morning with my 5-minute gratitude journal, and it makes a world of difference for my mood and the energy I bring into that day. Frankly, this might be the most important part of my beauty routine.

Mornings are super simple – I cleanse and sunscreen. I was gifted It Confidence in a Cleanser and am now completely devoted. I use Supergoop Play Everyday SPF 50 for sunscreen, I used to be terrible about this but now I don’t miss a day. If I’m doing makeup, I’ll add a drop of Drunk Elephant D-Bronzi Sunshine Drops to my sunscreen + Glossier Boy Brow, Glossier Haloscope, and the same L’Oreal drugstore eyeliner I’ve used since I was 12.

What products do you keep on you throughout the day?

I realize this is completely cliche, but I think the only beauty product I keep on me throughout the day is Caudalie Beauty Elixir, especially in the summer or when traveling. In the summer I have travel sized sunscreens I throw in my bag. Oh, and a big bottle of water (when I remember).

What is your evening beauty routine?

I’ve dealt with acne and breakouts my whole life, so I’ve tried everything when it comes to skincare. What I’ve learned is that a simple routine works best for me. I cleanse, then I use a prescription topical retinoid, Tretinoin, and then moisturize with Clinique Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion. If I’m feeling luxurious (and dry) I’ll end with Everyday Oil. If I have a breakout, I’ll also use Starface hydro-stars, the cutest spot-treatments!

I also recently became obsessed with haircare and taking care of my curls for the first time. I switched to an all-natural, no parabens, silicons, sulfates, or alcohol routine called The Curly Girl Method. So after my shower with hair still wet, I’ll run a light cream (currently using Garnier Curl Nourish Butter Cream) and a Cantu Natural Gel through my hair, and then plop (look it up, it works!) with a microfiber towel or t-shirt. Also – you heard it here first – I’ve been using a miracle treatment from Ceremonia that’s launching in October, truly a game-changer for overall hair wellness and natural products that fit my new regime.

When do you feel most beautiful?

I feel most beautiful in the summer, when skin is naturally glowing (I also find I don’t break out as much in the summer, probably from the sunlight + drinking more water). I love wearing my skin completely bare with just sunscreen, and I think in the summer we all have a natural glow that lets us really strip down to the basics. I’m also generally happier in the summer and the warm months, and I think this comes through.

How do you define beauty?

The older I get, the more I truly understand how much how we feel impacts our beauty. To me, beauty is confidence and feeling comfortable and proud no matter what you look like. I’m really starting to understand that it actually doesn’t matter much how I look – if I’m feeling down and negative, I won’t feel or radiate beauty. But if I’m centered and confident, I know I emit positive energy that manifests physically, even if I’m in sweats and a top bun with a pimple on my face. I’ve learned that what’s going on inside – emotionally, sleep, hydrating, food, and exercise – is as, if not more important than what’s happening on the outside to our beauty.
