The 9 Month Beauty Bump

7 years ago by

Today, I want to introduce you to Laney, who I met while she was working at Estée Lauder. More recently, she launched a site dedicated to clean beauty called The Moment, and she’s pregnant! I follow her on Instagram and appreciate how honest she’s been about beauty woes during her pregnancy. We thought it would be great to have her share some advice on what’s getting her through these 9 months.

_______________

There are a lot of things about pregnancy I wasn’t expecting, but the most surprising and difficult to deal with has been my skin. Starting from pretty much day one, my skin has been like a 14-year old’s with horrible breakouts, the worst it’s ever been. And let me tell you, when you’re feeling puffy, bloated, nauseas, and exhausted, the last thing you want it to have a face full of pimples. It sounds crazy to focus on these external things over the miracle inside of you, but when your hormones are going crazy, sometimes it just happens.

Coincidentally, right around the time that I got pregnant I launched a clean, non-toxic beauty site, which had been a dream of mine for 10 years after working in fashion and big beauty. Perfect timing! I talked to anyone who would listen about my skin woes and dove head on into finding a cure for hormonal acne that was safe for pregnancy.

SKIN

More than anything I needed something to stop the breakouts. In my first trimester I had a meeting with the founder of True Botanicals who recommended her Clear line to me and I haven’t looked back since. The hero product for me is the serum. I use it to spot treat along my chin and jaw line where I’ve seen the worst breakouts. I don’t leave home without it (seriously).

To help heal the discoloration that’s been a fun byproduct of all the breakouts (I hope you hear my sarcasm), I’ve been relying on the face oil from Vintner’s Daughter. I know people can be scared of oils, but this one is so balancing and restorative, my skin has been loving it.

Even though I’m a fanatic about non-toxic products, when I got pregnant and my skin started to act insane, I couldn’t help but go back to my tried and true Cetaphil – it’s what got me through my teen breakouts so I thought it would help again. But I quickly discovered Peet Rivko’s Gentle Cleanser which is a clean and safe version of the drug store variety. The whole Peet Rivko unisex line is formulated for sensitive skin so it works great when your skin is on high alert. I’m also a big fan of the body oil which I rub all over my belly and boobs. It also doesn’t hurt that the packaging is sooo chic. I like to keep the products out on my bathroom counter because they just look so good.

MAKEUP

When it comes to makeup, I’ve developed a few tricks. The founder of Kjaer Weis, Kristin, taught me to use a tan blush (instead of pink) on my cheeks so I don’t enhance the redness caused by broken blood vessels. I also use her foundation and mascara when I need to feel super put together. I’ll spritz some of Sklar’s Meadow perfume, which is a non-toxic line that was developed by a former Apple exec who had trouble with synthetic fragrances when she was pregnant. It’s light and fresh and woman-powered!

HAIR

When you’re pregnant you get great hair. It’s like the one redeeming gift of pregnancy beauty, so I embrace it. I use the holy grail of non-toxic hair products: Rahua. Their color-safe shampoo and conditioner smell amazing and their new salt spray has been perfect for getting that cool girl hair. Plus, it smells like the tropics.

What else can I tell you? Make sure to dry brush to help flush out puffiness. And schedule lots of prenatal massages. As the French say, pregnancy should be “9 months of spa” – so enjoy it!

If you have any questions, feel free to ask me in the comments! I’ve met so many amazing people the last few months who have given me invaluable advice, the least I can do it pass it on.

  • Great article. I’m 4 months pregnant with my second. I never had issues with the skin on my face but elsewhere on my body my skin gets soooo dry and irritated from lotion or oils. I basically use a super rich eczema cream. Not fun but it does the job. My hair is just starting to thicken and get super lustrous. So much fun!
