A beauty minute with Laila Gohar
10 years ago by
Morning: I wake up in the morning and the first thing I do is have some coffee, before I even shower. I’m obsessed with these Turkish towels that my mom used to have when I was little and I hate all other towels, it’s the only thing I use. I adore Buly, a line of French cosmetics revamped by my friends Ramdane Touhami and Victoire de Taillac, for body wash. I wash my face in the morning with Bioderma Foaming Face Cleanser.
I don’t wash my hair myself. I have really intense, crazy hair and I recently cut it all which I thought would be easier but it’s actually more difficult for me. I found this Dominican hair salon in South Williamsburg and I go there every four or five days. And she puts it in rollers and then I take it out and that’s my look.
I don’t wear too much makeup. I use Clinique moisturizer. If I wear makeup, I use Benetint on my lips and cheeks. I like that you can put it two places. I have Chanel mascara, a MAC peach blush and I don’t wear foundation. If I wear lipstick it’s MAC Ruby Woo. I wear Diptyque Eau Lente perfume, it’s the same one that my parents wear.
I use the rose cream from Weleda and also their sage deodorant. When I get sick of that one, I use the Aesop deodorant. I make this little spray for myself using orange blossom water, it’s something that I cook with. I put it in a spray bottle with a little bit of water and I spray it all the time, everywhere. I don’t have a day look and a night look, it’s all the same look.
Day: I have the Benetint and Rosebud Salve in my handbag.
Night: I take my makeup off in probably the wrong way. I like to think that I remove my makeup first with the Bioderma remover, but actually I don’t. I just wash my face with this cleanser from the French pharmacy, it’s really basic. And I use the cream that they use for babies when they have a rash, Homeoplasmine.”
Great beauty routine!

I love that her routine is so simple.
Nice pic.

Beautiful!
But saying she’s not wearing much make-up, like almost nothing… well, there’s eyeliner, concealer and probably something on the lips that’s not Benetint nor Ruby Woo.
I seems “admitting” wearing/owing/using more than two make-up tools is not cool – what’s wrong with enhancing or using make-up like an accessoire?
Love her haircut, she’s beautiful!

Pour me démaquiller exit les lingettes et les démaquillants, j’utilise de l’huile de coco !! Excellent pour démaquiller et ça rend la peau toute douce et en plus le mascara s’enlève tellement plus facilement avec l’huile de coco !!

Wow-going to the hairdresser to get your hair washed every four days? That’s intense! It looks great though, you have to admit! ;)

Laila is one of the most beautiful “real girls” I’ve seen on the site. So exotic and yet seems down to earth!

Ohhh yes, I love those Peshtemal towels too!
Lovely post. Beautiful picture (and model).
Where do you find these girls?!?!
Beautiful! I love the simplicity of beauty.

I swear by Mac’s Ruby Woo, it goes with any complexion, it’s the best red lipstick i have ever used hands down!
THANK YOU for the BULY beauty secret!!! I went in yesterday after reading this particular post.
I was mesmerized by the sheer beauty of this ancient pharmacy. That was only the beginning. With the help of the lovely Charlotte, I found myself leaving with some beautiful articles. The research, thought and taste level of their packaging alone is worth the buy. However, I woke up this morning delighted with the feel of my face after using some well recommended oils and one wonderful cream. GARANCE, you are a wealth of excellent resources, and I THANK you heartily. BULY FOREVER!!!
Your necklace is so special. like it.
Dominican Salon in South Williamsburg?! I have been looking for one around here for the longest time. I have to go all the way uptown to 100th st now. Sucks. which one does she go to?
The salon actually just moved to the les it’s 151 ridge st. The jewlery is a mix of delfina delletrez, and some from a tiny shop on Spring between Elizabeth and Bowery and my grandmother :-) xx
Beautiful woman!
I LOVE Laila’s beauty routine (and her eyebrows) because it mirrors my own! I’m so lazy when it comes to taking care of my skin so the fewer steps, the better. I also endorse the Weleda Sage deodorant and the rose balm. I don’t have a work look or a weekend look or a day look vs. night look. It’s all the same. I’ve been known to wear a vintage gown to work and I do not work in a creative field…
Dominican salons are hard to come by where I live (Chicago), but there is one on my side of town. I haven’t had a blow out in ages, but the blow out/roller set is my kinda thing (in the winter. this humidity and a blow out does NOT WORK.)
At the beginning I have to say I was disappointed by the gap between the beautiful pictures of beautiful women on your beauty minute’s posts, and the only few tips they gave. I mean, my only thought was that they were very lucky, and for this reason very far away from me.
But a few days ago, miracle, I told myself : What if they had such beautiful skins BECAUSE they used only basics (and don’t put a cream at 8, another one at twelve, sometimes two in the middle of the day and four different before going to sleep) ?!
It actually works : just to use what my skin seems to need at the moment, fifteen minutes in the morning, fifteen at night, no more, and I look as bright as my sweet sixteen.
So, thank you so much for the wake up call, and the various inspiring feminities you show to us.
