A BEAUTY MINUTE WITH MELISSA MEDVEDICH

4 years ago by

We are so excited to introduce you to Melissa Medvedich today! She is the founder, formulator, all around mastermind behind Supernal and its cult product, Cosmic Glow Oil. She also happens to be an all around delight of a human and is sharing her paired down skin routine with us today! Enjoy!

What is your morning beauty routine?

I start every morning with a few minutes of Vedic mediation and a quick, 2-minute spritz in the shower. I’m a morning person, but I don’t ever feel completely awake and ready to go unless I get in the shower for a minute or two. I do a thorough face cleanse in the evening, so in the morning I just rinse my face and eyes while in the shower and let my skin get moist and damp before applying any products. My skincare regimen has organically become more minimal over the years as I learned through trial and error what my skin personally responds to best. The first product I apply is a hydrosol. As a skincare formulator, I usually have an organic rose or other floral water on-hand that I’m testing as an ingredient for future offerings, but I love May Lindstrom’s Jasmine Garden and lately I find myself reaching for Tower 28’s SOS Daily Rescue Facial Spray which has been very soothing for irritated skin from mask wearing. I follow the facial mist with Cosmic Glow Oil, applying through a press and pat method, which I let sink in before applying my last step of sunscreen. Most days I use Josh Rosebrook’s Nutrient Day Cream SPF 30, but if I’m not going outside I skip this step (please don’t tell any of my facialist friends). Megababe’s Soapy Pits is my all-time favorite deodorant and Sigil Scent’s Prima Materia is my fragrance of choice lately, it’s so special. I have never really worn a lot of makeup, usually just some mascara, under eye concealer, and maybe some cream blush, but since COVID I haven’t really been wearing any. Not because I don’t enjoy it, but because I was noticing makeup was not ideal for my skin under a mask.

What products to keep on you to use throughout the day?

Lip balm, always and forever. Right now I’m rotating between Beneath Your Mask’s Remedy, Haoma’s Lip Balm, or Tower 28’s ShineOn Lip Jelly in Chill if I’m feeling frisky. Hand sanitizer and hand cream are also in every bag. Beneath Your Mask has an incredible cream called Heal Whipped Skin Soufflé. I discovered this cream after asking a hand model with the most beautiful hands and cuticles I have ever seen what she used and this was the brand!

What is your evening beauty routine?

I definitely spend more time on my routine at night, where it can feel like more of a ritual or even a meditation, and my regimen will vary slightly depending on how on my skin feels. I take a longer shower in the evening and always double cleanse my face in the shower. I’ll usually start with an oil cleanse, using something I put together from my own stock of ingredients (typically jojoba-based). I also take this opportunity to freestyle massaging my face simultaneously with the oil, replicating techniques I’ve experienced in facial treatments or see from estheticians on instagram. After gently removing the oil cleanser with a hot washcloth (which also acts as an exfoliant), I’ll do a second foaming cleanse to remove any remaining residue, for this I love Farmaesthetics Fine Herbal Cleanser. I have also recently been switching it up from this method and alternating with Klur’s Gentle Matter and Skin Soil cleansing system. Klur is such a beautiful brand, and Lesley the founder is so lovely and a brilliant formulator, these are two of my favorite new to me products of 2020. Once I’m out of the shower, I follow the same routine as the morning with the exception of sunscreen. In the evening, I might also use a gua sha stone with Cosmic Glow, which feels so relaxing before bed. Lately once a week I’ve been doing a powder face mask, I absolutely love Golde’s Clean Greens which I’ll leave on for 10 minutes before rinsing off and applying face mist and oil. I wash my hair twice a week with Act+Acre and usually air dry, but I am also obsessed with my most extravagant purchase this year, the Dyson Airwrap. I don’t know what kind of magic vacuum elves live in this device, but it changed my life. Starting and self-funding a business has not left me with a tremendous amount of discretionary spending money, but this thing was worth every penny. Quick salon quality blowouts, with minimal heat has been an utter game changer.

When do you feel most beautiful?

After a very solid night’s rest, or after a day at the beach relaxing with my husband on vacation.

How do you define beauty?

Beauty to me is kindness, kindness towards yourself and the kindness you project onto everyone who comes into your personal orbit.
