How do you celebrate your birthday?
It’s been a long time since I’ve had party in celebration of my birthday. Born on Christmas, which has proved over the years to be both a blessing and a curse, birthday parties have been something I’ve considered unlikely to happen for me – thinking that everyone is already gone for the holiday’s or committed to other festivities.
But this year I’ve decided to throw a party! Or try to at least. I’m realizing there are so many factors to consider. Like whether I cram too many people into a small apartment or try and find a bar that will be fun but not too crowded. Or do I do a sit down dinner? A day time soirée? Sit home alone with a bottle of wine refusing to accept that I’m getting older??
And while I’m embracing the challenge (and the age!) this year, I could use some help! How do you prefer to celebrate your birthday? Is there a way to keep it fun and easy?

I too have a December birthday – people like you say are so busy (and now that I’m in grad school – studying!). I’ve always been shy about reserving a table at a bar – who knows how many people will come, and sometimes bars have been strangely grouchy if more people than you say show up. This year after seeing an awesome woman dressed as the queen of hearts, I’ve decided on an Alice in Wonderland party – in my apartment! I’m nervous but having so much fun making some decorations (nowhere close to Pinterest), an evite, and just having the joy of inviting people. I think the key is somewhere between your happiest and most realistic – if no one comes to take a selfie with my Alice in Wonderland props, who cares, I will ! So it’s all about the right expectations and effort. Knowing it could be a dissapointment.
Anyways, good luck, and most importantly – HAPPY BIRTHDAY!!!!

A yoga birthday party! Pick a fave space and hire a teacher you love and curate the event. Create a playlist, etc have light Nosh post class or do a toast and chocolates.
Happy birthday!! The best bday celebration for me is a mixture of high and low (like a good outfit!). I would start with a small dinner at my place with my very close friends (which in my case are 4 people + my boyfriend) and would then take a bigger crowd to a bar and buy them the first round of drinks. And then danse danse danse!
Je te comprends à cause que ma fête il est tout proch de Thanksgiving Américain. Des fois la même journée. Alors moi, je préfère de profité de la congee et prends un mini vacances avec mon amour. Même si c’est seulement de passerais quelques jours ensemble dans notre ville. Sinon, j’aimerais aussi aller chez la famille pour célébrer Thanksgiving, et peut être reçois quelques vœux de fête aussi. Bonne fête (en avance)! ???????????? J’espère que tu passerais une très belle journée, pleins d’amitié, d’amour et de gâteaux! ????????????????????
Compliqué en effet. Moi je suis le née le 19 et rassure-toi c’est la même galère pour organiser quelque chose avant Noël les gens sont souvent occupés. Et en plus cette année je fête mes 30 ans et moi qui réfléchissais depuis 1 an à l’organisation de cette soirée et bien finalement je ne fais rien car j’ai plein de choses sur le feu ces derniers mois et pour les mois à venir. Je suis un peu déçue mais c’est comme ça. Je le fêterai peut-être aux beaux jours même si c’est peu bizarre.
My birthday is also December 25! I like it because there is no need to plan a party- I know I will see the people closest to me anyway. So that is quite nice. I never make a big deal of my birthday though. It is a busy time of year, certainly but I am not interested in being the center of attention anyway. I prefer to plan a party for someone else.
By the way, you know Natalie means Christmas- that’s a perfect name then. My middle name is Noelle :)
This year I also decided I wanted a party, invited a handful of people (plus dates) to a wine bar, and had a great time. It was the least stressful birthday party I’ve had. I normally either forgo one all together or have everyone I know to my house, which means I spend all my time hosting instead of getting to have long conversations.
I wish i could help you with some ideas but nothing crosses my mind !!!Sorry…no wait…maybe not this year or the next but why not starting saving some $$$ for in a couple of years a trip to a country that doesn’t celebrate Christmas the way we do , you Know ?
Hey Nathalie, i’m a Reveillon girl, that mean, 1. January. It’s really nice and also strange. Your description is the way I feel, sometimes I eared that Friends had the worst Night of there lifes, sometimes, they have to cheers with family… It’s not a big deal. I havent planed party since a long time. It’s a moment. A beautiful one when all People who really matters things a bit of You. And then, it’s the next Party of someone else, and it’s also delight full.

Mon frère est né le 24/12, je comprends ton pb! Il ne le fête jamais son anniversaire avec ses amis, c’est avec la famille en mode noel! Cette année un anniversaire surprise est prévu, organisé par ses amis et en effet il a fallu s’y prendre assez tôt se mettre d’accord sur le programme! Après avoir pensé à louer un grand chalet au ski pdt qq jours (mais c’était déjà trop tard), finalement ce sera une soirée dans un restaurant qu’il aime bcp mercredi soir.
Je suis une habituée des fêtes de dernière minute, improvisée (je suis née en plein été donc aussi difficile de réunir tout le monde)! Cela depend avec qui tu le fêtes, soit en mode sex & the city avec des copines (resto/ soirée), soit commencer chez toi en mode apéro dînatoire/champagne et sortir, soit réserver une table/privatiser une salle dans un beau restaurant qui fait aussi bar.
Je suis née en juin et j’ai un grand jardin/terrasse/picine qui me permet d’inviter 60 personnes de la fin d’après-midi au milieu de la nuit, en plus en Provence, donc un cas de figure très différent du tien ! J’aime préparer moi même les plats du buffets (je m’y prends 2 mois avant pour les menus et 15 jours avant pour préparer), tester de nouvelles recettes, souvent thématiques ; je délègue le service des boissons à un ami doué pour les cocktails (j’impose un thème, ou je limite les ingrédients, c’est un anniversaire, pas un open bar de CluB Med !); et je demande à chacun d’amener une playlist parce que je ne suis pas très douée en musique.
Mais j’ai une amie née en fin d’année, avec les mêmes préoccupations que toi (approche des fêtes, invités peu dispos, petit appart, pas envie de repas à table trop solennel…) : elle fête donc son anniversaire pour sa “demie”, en juillet, dans le jardin d’une amie, avec une tonnelle et music-band cubain ou latino selon les années. Tout le monde amène un truc pour le buffet et elle fournit les boissons, la vaisselle champêtre et les bottes de paille pour s’asseoir.
Je pense que je décalerais aussi ma fête d’anniversaire aux beaux jours si j’étais née très près de Noël. Quitte à envoyer les invitations en décembre pour mai par exemple…. Comme ça tes invités t’enverront des bisous et des bonnes pensées le jour J, et viendront faire la fête au soleil un peu plus tard ! Cela dit, cela n’empêche pas d’aller fêter ça le vrai jour avec quelques amis en sortant dans un lieu sympa, à New York ça ne manque pas, histoire de ne pas s’affaler sur un canapé avec ta bougie et ton coulant au chocolat !
