Negative Space
9 years ago by
The days of nail art are over, but I couldn’t help but fall for this subtle design when I saw it backstage at the Adam Selman show. It’s about as close as nail art gets to minimalist…
Madeline Poole, who came up with the design, was inspired by the concept of negative space. It’s just as much about the natural parts of the nail, and the contrast that the dark spots create, as it is about the kind of spontaneous pattern. A cool idea, right?
I love that it’s also about highlighting the natural, and using some good clear polish can be great for strengthening and supporting nails! What I love even more is that there’s a really pretty way to approach nail art without having to go anywhere near neons (eugh) or diamantés (double eugh).
What do you think?

Moi j’aime bien! Pourtant je suis pas du tout (mais alors pas du tout) nail art.
Là je trouve l’effet très nature, minimaliste et finalement assez joeur avec ces tâches un peu partout.
Qui sait, je pourrais essayer ça :)
XX et bon weekend,

This is beautiful! Simple and so innovative.

So simple and chic! Love it!

The model’s hands are beautiful, and the natural polish looks so nice and clean. But, the black dots made me think of frog eggs meticulously dropped on her fingernails. I understand the minimalist idea, but I think it isn’t pretty.
I started doing this on my toe nails, with GOLD, but placed symmetrically in the middle of the toe nail. It feels like jewelry.
Your version sounds pretty, I’d actually wear gold in that way. Maybe next summer, during winter my toenails will be brightly colored to remind me of summer :)
Funky element of surprise!

I love it. So minimalist and so elegant. Thank you for the discovery!
Since when is nail art over? I have three nieces, two books of crazy lovely designs, and one huge bag of gear. When did we all decide it was done?
Even if it is, I don’t care. My twelve year old, eight year old and four year old nieces and I will spend our summer Christmas holidays painting our nails (and toenails!) in pink zebra stripes and (if I can hold the brush steady enough) cutely myopic owls. Then we will head to a cafe and the girls will take selfie shots of their hands to send their friends while dipping cookies into their babyccino. I will teach the two older girls about bokeh and colour contrast. My four year old niece (the most adorable red headed Botticelli baby who has ever walked the earth) will wander up to the counter and ask the barista to admire her nails. Even if we’re fashion-dated, it’s too good a time to miss :)
I love minimal nail art

So nice. I think this is the only nail art i’ve ever like!
The days of nail art will never be over. For as long as people have nails, they will adorn them. The subtle design is nice.
I LOVE this!!!!

so fresh and beautiful – dots work great but this would work with any graphic shapes like triangles or bars
super in love. yay for minimalism!
I think it’s frickin brillant!!
Enfin une manucure que je me sens capable de faire ;-)!
I’ve never seen anything like this…I may just even pull this look off…after I scrap the paint and dye of my fingers.
I am not a hater! I am a lover of the GaranceDore-space, but I feel sometimes you overelaborate. Perhaps just let this just be about the beauty, the vanity, the fun… a pictures of these great nails, without the explanation, is all I go here for.
There, there. No one thinks you’re a hater. People have to fill up space on a blog, it’s ok.
sincerement, je toruve cela très chic :) et je pense que l’époque du nail art n’est pas encore finie:) c’est difficile de faire nail art sans rester vulgaire mais c’est possible :)

Hmm. No.
Bringing back history. It makes me think of my father’s finger nails, whenever he hit himself with a hammer or had them squeezed by accident in a cramp.
I like the idea of the look more than the look itself.
Je trouve ça sublime!
Merci pour la découverte et belle journée.
I’m not into nail polish/painting my nails, but this is so cool that for the first time I’m inspired to go and do a nail art.
Effet surpris réussi ! simple et efficace ! existe surement dans d’autres coloris pour tous les goûts et humeurs ! merci
