Dear Garance, I loved your article! It’s really witty and fun to read and I love the journey you take us through, I’ve been to Corsica several times and I love that island a lot! I’ve even been to Girolata! I saw a lot of this world and I really must say, Corsica is one of the most beautiful spots on Earth! But pssst….. actually you shouldn’t say that to loud, too many tourists are never good ;-) xxx

So beautifully written, you really have a talent for bringing to life the spirit of a place and its people. I might recommend people check out the film ‘Joueuse’ (Queen to Play) which was filmed in Corsica and brilliantly displays its natural wonders and unique style. I look forward to your writings (at some point) on Bali.
We were a week in Corsica. VERY dangerous. There’s a mafia, there are feuds, vendettas everywhere. Giant man eating pigs roam freely, so you can’t ever get out of the car. Crumbling roads cling to cliffs that drop thousands of feet into the sea. No one will speak to you. Corsicans can’t stand anyone who is not Corsican. Ultra-nationalists run half the island. It’s either very hot or very cold. The food is bizarre, and there’s absolutely no alcohol allowed anywhere. No one speaks English or even French, only Corsican. If you so much as look at a Corsican woman, Corsican men are honor bound to kill you. They all carry knives that say « vendetta » on them for this purpose. Did I mention bandits? They hide in the bushes, which by the way smell very badly, and prey on foreigners. In spite of all this, the beaches are horribly overcrowded, mostly with Russian and American tourists. It’s best to go somewhere else and leave Corsica alone. Trust me.

haha je parie que Martin est corse ou veut rester parmi les voyageurs qui profitent des plages belles et solitaires!
J’aime beaucoup la Corse, où j’ai de merveilleux souvenirs, et lire tes paroles Garance m’a fait sourire parce que c’est la même fierté, le même amour que je ressens pour ma Sardaigne…Les deux îles ont une beauté encore intacte (pour la plupart…), mais malheureusement nos côtes sont parfois «contaminés» par les batiments, une foule de touristes pas respectueux ou encore par des polygones militaires cadeau de politiques pas avisés …
Et alors, pour une petite minute je me sens comme Martin, je voudrais dire à chacun de s’en aller et de bien nous laisser à nos galères, mais à nos plages et à nos parfums aussi :))
Mais un instant plus tard, la beauté devient le remède qui soigne et les belles émotions deviennent quelque chose qu’on ne peut pas éviter de partager: alors, les secret qu’on garde en tant que locaux s’éclosent pour cause d’une générosité qu’on a reçu de nos îles et qu’on ne peut s’empecher d’offrir aux autres, qu’on aimerait recevoir « chez nous », un par un!!! :)

Currently watching the TV coverage of the Tour de France through Corsica – stunning scenery and the sea looks incredible. (Go Cadel Evans!)
Le plus bel endroit au monde pour moi. Tellement beau que c’est bouleversant d’en parler. La nature est d’une splendeur incompréhensible et irréelle, et je n’ai jamais trouvé de gens aussi gentils que secrets. Il y a eu un reportage dans Envoyé Spécial il y a quelques jours sur le compliqué problème de la spéculation immobilière et ses réseaux en Corse, je vous conseille d’y jeter un petit coup d’oeil. Et surtout de lire Jérôme Ferrari…pourquoi pas un peu de Corse à Bali ;-)

Je suis allée en Corse une fois et j’ai beaucoup aimé ! Je me souviens que j’ai mangé des fruits de mer sur la plage. Quelques copains de Snoop ( mon mari) nous ont bien accueilli et un copain m’a fait visité sur une moto. Il a roulé sur la montagne tellement rapide que j’ai eu une vertige et je me suis dite « Je vais peut-être mourir ici en Corse, mais je ne connais à pain la France… (Je suis arrivée en France il y à à peine 1 an et demi) » alors je me suis accrochée à lui toutes mes forces. Ton article me donne envie de retourner. Cet été je vais une petite île à côté d’Okinawa, mais ce sera ma prochaine destination, la Corse !

Bravo. Super bien écrit (je sais ce que c’est que d’être francophone et de devoir réfléchir en anglais pour écrire correctement) et super idée de traitement du sujet. Fallais y penser!
Bonjour moi aussi je suis Corse , une pure et dure ;) Je trouve que de plus en plus de monde s’interesse à notre île ce qui est très bien , mais pour être franche trop de monde se l’approprie. J’ai 15ans , j’y suis née et quand je vois toutes ces maisons construitent sur des sites préservés et en plus pas par des insulaires , des marques sois disant corses , je n’ai pas peur de citer le nom , comme Casanera qui se dit 100pour cent made in maquis mais qui en fait la plupart des produits ne sont pas fait avec des huiles corses et en plus ces produits sont vendus à des prix exorbitants , des touristes qui n’ont aucuns repect de rien .. pour l’écosystème etc…(l’année dernières aux iles Lavezzi des touristes , par exemple , jetaient leurs détritus sur la plage) ça me crève le coeur. J’aime mon île plus que tout , mais quand je vois comme elle devient… J’ai l’impression qu’elle devient un produit marketing. On se sert de nos traditions , nos racines , pour faire vendre. Aujourd’hui les jeunes corses connaissent très bien Casanera etc.. mais ne savent pas dire un mot corse à part ‘Ava’ et ‘Va be’. Tout ça pour dire que ton article me fait plaisir car la Corse pour les (vrais) Corses est comme un bébé je pense , qu’on veut montrer car on en est fières , mais qu’on veut préserver mais c’est de moins en moins facile…

Aaaahhhh this post me fait bien PLAISIR !!!!! Ma Mere, Corse D’Urtaca (le Nord) mais j’ai grandi dans le Sud de la France. Mes parents passent 6 mois de l’annee a Calvi, ett j’ai a moitie grandi sur un voilier autour de la Corse.
J’ai vecu a Londres tres longtemps et y ai envoye tout mes pots (avec certains conseils ;-) maintenant je suis a Vancouver et je continue… :) La Corse ma manque terriblement.

I went to Corsica in May…actually stayed in Bonifacio and took a cab to Portvechio. I was on the island for 5 days solo having stayed 6 days in Paris prior. You are from a beautiful place with great air quality, people, and food:) I noticed that once I stepped off the plane in Figali. I’m glad I came across your blog.
I had the pleasure of traveling solo, to Bonifacio, on the last leg of my trip. I went last May and spent 6 days in Paris and 4 days in Corsica. From the moment I stepped off the plane and inhaled the fresh air, I knew I was in a special place. I was stranded at the airport, not knowing it was soooo tiny and I had to make prior taxi arrangements…my flight landed really late. Not knowing how to speak French, and my NYC attitude getting the best of me, my patience wore thin until this beautiful woman, who saw me board in Paris, walked over to see if I was ok. Luckily, she spoke English and she lived in Port Vechiccio..the next town cover from Bonifacio. She was African, married a Corsican and lived on the island for 20 plus years! Out of the kindness of her heart, and God’s good graces, she offered to drop me to my hotel! Needless to say, I arrived safely at my destination and enjoyed the rest of my days in Bonifacio. When I tried to locate her, YES! I took a cab to Port Vecchio to visit her business establishment…I wanted to purchase something as a way of saying thank you…However, she was not to be found and communication at the boutique was bad…I don’t speak French. I mention all this to say, you are from a beautiful place. The people, the scene, the food, and air quality is amazing. I look forward to my return one day. * Please excuse any typos…I’m just writing from my heart and memory.
Wonderful article with some sage advice for any traveller. Sunshine and not just beach but also the colours and colours of flowers – what could be more beautiful in summer! I want to go to Corsica right now.
