New York Apartments

On dit que si on est capable de trouver un appartement à NY, on peut à peu près tout faire. C’est vraiment un univers impitoyable, en gros il faut être prêt à sacrifier un rein, tout ça pour trouver un appart via une petite annonce que l’agent immobilier n’aura fait que trouver sur Internet. Et puis franchement, hein, qui gagne 40 fois son loyer mensuel ?
Après cette aventure épuisante et ruineuse, on se retrouve avec un proprio ou une agence immobilière qui nous ponctionnent chaque mois leur dû. Moi, j’ai loué cinq apparts en huit ans depuis que je vis ici, et exclusivement à des proprios qui habitaient le même immeuble. S’ensuit une relation particulière qui nécessite pas mal de subtilité. Je crois que je préférerais avoir affaire à une entreprise impersonnelle plutôt que de tomber sur le-dit proprio quand je sors mes poubelles dans mon short trop court, ou alors que je suis bourrée et incapable d’articuler trois mors et qu’il veut absolument me parler de la fuite du frigo ou du rat qui essaie de s’aventurer dans l’appart par la cour… Euh, pourquoi est-ce qu’on paie un loyer, à NY, déjà ?
Il y a aussi le parcours du combattant de ceux qui tentent d’arriver dans une coloc remplie de gens qui se connaissent déjà. On essaie de se présenter sous son meilleur jour, de convaincre tout le monde qu’on n’est pas un dangereux criminel mais quelqu’un qui viendra compléter à merveille le groupe. Je ne parlerai même pas du moment où on se rend compte qu’un des colocs est un vrai cauchemar….
Bref, survivre à la quête d’un appartement à NY, ça mérite presque une récompense… Et je pense sincèrement que si on est capable de trouver un appart à NY, on peut le faire partout. Vous en pensez quoi, vous ?

I think it depends on the rental management company. The first company I tried to work with needed everything but my kidneys. In the process of waiting for their zillion questions to come through and be answered, I found another apartment on Craigslist… the broker asked for a simple application, $100 fee, and a screen capture of my credit score. It took just a couple days to be signed and finished with my first NYC apartment.

Ugh, I’m just starting this process as I move to the city! The horror stories certainly don’t help but like you said, if you can do this you can do anything. Shout out to anyone who wants to sublet or has an extra room! Haha.

Totally hear you. It’s the worst – nevermind renting as a non-American.. I made 80x monthly rent and I still had trouble getting approved because I didn’t have a credit score since I’m Canadian. That’s actually happened to a few friends – I’ve had friends have to put down a year of rent down upfront.. in cash. Insanity.
Not sure how wide your search is but I’m always amazed by how much people are resistant to the idea of a slightly longer commute, so perhaps checking out slightly less popular places in Brooklyn would be worth a shot. Or Long Island City, NJ, etc – I’ve always lived in Brooklyn for instance and I’m always shocked by how many people refuse to check out Brooklyn (except maybe Williamsburg) because they don’t want to commute a few extra stops (not saying this is you but if you’re searching in a narrow field, definitely worth considering!)
