Dans le tumulte de ma récente frénésie culturelle, j’ai décidé, avec quelques amies, de démarrer un book club.
Rien de trop soutenu comme celui de Delphine, juste un livre par mois dont on discute autour d’un brunch, chez moi. Basta ! Notre premier livre, c’est « L’Homme à l’autographe » de Zadie Smith (oui, je suis fan !), mais je suis ouverte aux recommandations pour notre prochain livre en novembre ! Vous avez lu des romans que vous avez adorés, récemment ? Et ça vous intéresse qu’on continue à partager nos sélections sur le site ? Peut-être qu’on pourrait tous les lire ensemble ?

I’ve always loved the idea of a book club!
I love to discuss the books I’ve read. Sharing is half the fun! :)
I haven’t really read that much lately. So many books are just too depressive. Good, but so sad that I just can’t read them! :(
I like to return to old favorites all the time.
Anna Gavalda for example. Haruki Murakami.
I love reading tips, too. I try to write them down and remember to borrow the books when I go to the library. Or bookshop.

I would recommend three books – I’ve read them during the spring and early summer
1. W.David Marx: Ametora – How Japan saved american style – a fascinating history of how Japan « invented » the Ivy League style & perfected it (also fashion history for brands like Uniqlo, Van, Bathing Ape…)
2. Kazuo Ishiguro: The buried Giant – a great read and completly different angle to the known stories around King Arthur and his knights
3. E.M. Delafield: Diary of a Provincial Lady – witty, funny, earnest – a woman writes fashion & crisis between WW I & II
I share your obsession with Zadie Smith too!!! I’ve just finished reading The Girls, by Emma Cline which I loved and one book I do always return to is the Secret History, by Donna Tartt, so very, very good.
I’ve just read Eve Babitz’s Slow days Fast company and it was such a wonderful book ! <3

The Short Story Advent Calendar is a cool box set of 24 chapbooks to read on the days leading up to Christmas – each one by a different contemporary author, which remain a surprise until you crack open the seal. Better than musty chocolate! And short fiction is perfect for busy schedules.
Fates and Furies by Lauren Groff is quite the novel; it was one of those reads I just couldn’t put down! I’m currently reading The Secret History by Donna Tartt which is pretty good so far!

I just finished Juliet Naked, by Nick Hornby; easy to read, witty, sarcastic but very much optimistic, just what we need in those times we’re living ;)
sweetbitter by Stephanie Danler, a must read for anyone who’s ever been a server in a big city, loved it!
Am I the only one who found the writing a bit forced? It seemed like it was trying too hard at times. It could have been half as long in my opinion.
These two books are at once haunting and familiar: Housekeeping by Marilynne Robinson and Sula by Toni Morrison. Both are perfect for busy, contemplative seasons like fall and winter. And yes, love the idea of a book club!

Great idea about the reading club!
We are always pushed to know everything, and to follow up all the information flow. It can turn out to be frustrating and discouraging.
I support the idea of the quality reading and slow reading, and one-two books per month is realistic and motivating.

These suggestions are all lovely, and I’d be very interested in a book group. That said, Toni Morrison’s Sula was life changing for me 15 years ago, and I just picked up a copy because I’ve been wanting to re-read it!
I don’t know if you were thinking of just fiction, but I’m currently halfway through Edmund de Waal’s The White Road, which I’ve been enjoying a great deal. I think it would make a great book club book.
The best books I’ve read this year:
Old Filth by Anna Gavalda or My Brilliant Friend by Elenea Ferrante.
Both are great reads; touching, funny an very true in it’s own ways

Alors en suggestion pas très littéraire mais inspirant je te conseille le livre de Kilian Jornet « Courir ou mourir »
Sinon très facile à lire, de la vulgarisation scientifique Giulia Enders « Le charme discret de l’intestin »
Claude Gallay « Les déferlantes » si tu veux avoir un aperçu des côtes françaises
Et tu l’as sans doute déjà lu mais Harper Lee « Ne tirez pas sur l’oiseau moqueur »

You have to read Elena Ferrante My Brilliant Friend, 2012. Its about friendship and women, very interesting !!
I recently read Half of a Yellow Sun by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie and it was absolutely incredible. Every single page was beautiful and the character development is wonderful. I was captivated within the first few pages. Definitely HIGHLY recommend!
I just read Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd and loved it.
The Argonauts by Maggie Nelson!!!!
Why not a book club but it’s so hard to read when distracted by what’s in our phones…
I also read like Constance: The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd and loved it. It’s about slavery, feminism and relationships.
In the Unlikely Event is a good novel set up in NJ and based of real events in a small town.
