This book is amazing! She really does transport you back to a time where people supported each other and it wasn’t all about being famous…
It’s one of my favourites and its written so beautifully! Their story is full of magic,love and creativity.

Read it when it first came out. I went to elementary school with a member of her band, Richard Sohl, who unfortunately passed away. And one of my neighbors replaced him after he died. I really like the way she writes and was glad she chose to share her story with us.

Et j’ai tellement aimé. C’est comme un instantané d’une époque, d’une allure. Une photo d’une histoire, d’un bref instant, d’une histoire d’amour qui fait valser art et complexité. J’ai eu la chance de la voir en concert et croyez moi chère Garance, il y a dans toute sa personne ces années lointaines mais si inspirantes. J’ai adoré ce livre, et depuis est devenue également une grande fan du travail de Mapplethorpe.
En le lisant, j’ai eu envie d’être inspirée, de connaître ça, et en le refermant, je l’ai été.

Yes, but not all of it. It´s a lovely description of two young artists and their struggle. However the story repeats itself over and over again, and at some point it doesn´t bring more new on. Have you read it?

Yes! Absolutely one of my favorite books this year. I cried at the end. Reading about Smith’s and Mapplethorpe’s artistic and personal journeys was so inspiring. It’s also fun to look at photographer Judy Linn’s book « Patti Smith 1969-1976 » alongside « Just Kids. »
No, I haven’t read it but as far as other people are saying it looks great. On top of that, it looks perfect as a piece of decor too, just like the candle!

Beautifully written book. Real, sad, and inspiring. A tale of a time when being an artist was a true sacrifice with passion. Love this book.
Je l’ai terminé il y a maintenant trois jours, ce livre est fantastique, à l’image des deux artistes en question. Patti Smith retrace extraordinairement bien chaque détail de sa vie, partagée avec l’excellent photographe Robert Mapplethorpe; on en apprend sur toutes ces années vécues intensément… Simplement magique. J’ai complètement été plongée dans la folie des vies bohémiennes d’artistes en tout genre aux Etats-Unis à l’époque de Woodstock et de toutes les bonnes choses au fondement du Rock n’ Roll !
En bref, à lire absolument pour les amateurs (ou non!) de l’art, de la vie.
Oui je l’ai lu, et quelle découverte. Je ne connaissais pas trop l’oeuvre de Patty Smith et encore moins de Mapplethorpe. C’est un livre incroyablement fort et inspirant qui narre une époque que je n’ai pas connu mais qui m’a tout de suite plu. Une très belle écriture, un destin incroyable.
C’est mon premier commentaire sur ton blog que je suis depuis très longtemps. Je voulais te remercier de me faire rire, d’illuminer mes journées et de me faire rêver d’un monde que je ne côtoie pas mais qui m’inspire.
Bravo pour tes challenges…. les vidéos sont une réussite.

yes last year a dear friend lend it to me. it is a really sweet and sincere book. i want to read it in english because although the spanish translation is good there’s always a few things lost. i can say that i almost cry with it, it’s a great memoir and a beautiful and inspiring love story between to people that met at the right place in the right time. And i remember when i read it i was all like « midnight in paris mode on » but with the chelsea scene, like totally obsessed with the late sixties, beginning of the seventies, it was like everyone that appears in that book is someone that i admire.

Yes, as soon as it got out. I was always intrigued by NY of the time, Chelsea Hotel people, Patty’s style and, since I didn’t know much about her life, was very curious about the story she would tell.
I loved it – the woman can write (daaah) and, equally importantly, it is a very honest book.
I only wish it was bigger.

Oui, et il est juste fabuleux. Cette relation si passionée et à la fois si dramatique qu’elle a partagé avec son ami et amant, le célèbre photographe Robert Mappletorpe, est bouleversante. Patti Smith est d’une sincérité incroyable et sans artifices. Il faut le lire ! (larmes garanties).

In between I clock the action. Eyeing the traffic circulating the lobby hung with bad art. Big invasive stuff unloaded on Stanley Bard in exchange for rent. The hotel is an energetic, desperate haven for scores of gifted hustling children from every rung of the ladder. Guitar bums and stoned-out beauties in Victorian dresses. Junkie poets, playwrights, broke-down filmmakers, and French actors. Everybody passing through here is somebody, if nobody in the outside world.

oui, cet été et j’ai adoré. L’amour inconditionnel qui unit Patti Smith et Robert Mapplethorpe est beau, quoiqu’il se passe, ils sont toujours là l’un pour l’autre. J’ai aimé aussi la description de leur processus créatif, ça donne envie d’aller explorer notre univers intérieur, de faire des collages, de créer, d’esssayer, de se lâcher…. ça fait du bien
I actually chose to listen to it on Audible (book on iPhone) where Patti Smith reads it herself. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! I could not imagine trying to hear her voice in my head reading it after hearing her thick New York accent and touching emotion in her voice. So incredible.

what a wonderful book Garance. I loved how it chronicled the sheer struggle and uncertainty felt by Patti and Robert as they pursued their creative instincts, and her description of NY in the 60s and 70s. Patti is such a hero of mine!

Oui, je l’ai dévoré début 2011, il est très bien écrit et fait découvrir une époque différente (j’ai 25 ans). J’ai eu la chance de pouvoir voir une exposition de Robert Mapplethorpe à Stockholm qui m’a permit de mettre des visuels sur ce que j’avais lu. Je me suis également procuré un livre de photographies de Patty Smith. Cette époque était passionante; je retrouve des éléments dans le Life de Keith Richards. Bonne lecture!

Je ne suis une fan de la première heure, cela ne fait « que » 3 ans que je suis ton blog assiduement. Comme des milliers d’autres personnes en France et ailleurs, je l’ai vu évoluer, se chercher et se développer d’une façon plutôt agréable, car tout ce changement était mené intelligemment (avec beaucoup d’honnêteté et d’intuition, je trouve).
En revanche, s’il y a bien une chose que je déplore, c’est la perte de spontanéité dans tes écrits. Même si ton humour et ton second degré en acier trempé restent bien là, on n’a plus droit à nos expressions frenchies et à nos tournures de phrase bizarroïdes qu’on ne trouve qu’à l’oral… Alors je sais bien que tu vis à New York, maintenant, tout ça tout ça, que Pardon My French soit 100% anglais, même quand tu interwiews des Français, bon, soit, mais quand même, fais quelque chose ,une cure, je ne sais pas moi, mais garde ton aisance en français bon sang de bonsoir !
(bientôt wikipédia va nous dire que Grance Doré est une blogueuse américaine, et merde quoi ! Cocoricooooo!!! Elle vient du pays de l’apéro charcut/beurre/baguette, bande de maboules!)
Sur cette crise de jalousie patriotique, (ouais ouais, je me suis relue, m’en fous j’assume) encore bravo pour ton travail, bravo aussi à ton équipe, ils ont tous l’air géniaux (et je fais partie des fans de Gino, c’est vrai qu’il est craquant)

That book is amazing, especially her description of that époque at the Chelsea Hotel, Andy Warhol and . such. It is especially interesting to witness America when it is undergoing such progressive transformation and change via Patti Smith. :)
If you’re a reader , I definitely recommend Kindle! v. portable… It’s lightweight and hence It’s been a great investment so far.
Yes et je le recommande ! Comme un voyage à travers le temps mais aussi très relatif à la vie de nos jours. J’ai pu la voir en concert récemment après l’avoir lu, on se sent transporté par ses paroles comme des échos du livre, d’un temps distant mais si proche par moments.
I read Patti’s book this year when I was having a ‘what to do with my life’ moment. Her prose writing style and her honest and simple story telling humbled me. It convinced me that I had to simplify myself.
She has long been one of my favorite musicians, poets and inspirational women. This book just strengthened my opinion of her.

I read last year and loved it. A very good reading even for people, like myself, not very much « rock and roll » type.
Yea! I read it already when it came out,maybe 2 years ago. Its a wonderful book by the most inspiring woman in the universe. I love Patti Smith, started to listen to her when I was 15, in the 80ies, and loved her since. She is a wonderful poet and writer, and a great lady in rock’n roll. Her personal style is the coolest ever and she seems like a really really nice person. Saw her live some years ago, and my thought after the gig was » Ok, now I can die in peace » I love Patti Smith!

No I haven’t I have been looking for something to read. I have read so many books on this era. Jim Carroll’s books are great. I first read The Basket Ball Diaries when I was in high school. I can’t believe he is no longer with us.

I read it last year and was shocked by how moved I was by it. I’ve never paid much attention to Patti Smith or her music, but after reading this book, I love her! It is written so simply, yet is so moving and beautiful. True art. This was one of those books that after reading it, you feel forever changed. Hope
