Depuis qu’on se balade tous l’oeil rivé à notre téléphone, avoir une montre, c’est légèrement redondant.
Même moi qui ne supporte pas d’être en retard et qui avais toujours une montre au poignet (toujours la même montre, en fait), je me suis rendue compte que ces dernières années, mon poignet s’est allégé. Plus de montre. Rangée dans ma boîte à bijoux, les aiguilles arrêtées, triste.
Ça me brise un peu le coeur, parce que j’ai toujours trouvé les montres belles et poétiques, porter avec soi l’idée du temps qui passe, les aiguilles qui tournent, les battements quand on rapproche la montre de l’oreille, comme un battement de coeur. En fait, je crois que j’aime tellement les montres que je n’ai jamais vraiment pu choisir ma montre favorite. Et les montres que j’aime étaient invariablement atrocement chères.
C’est pour ça que je suis ravie d’observer que les choses sont en train de bouger niveau horlogerie. De nouvelles marques proposent des montres vraiment cool, à des prix accessibles, qui en font des objets qu’on peut porter comme des accessoires, sans trop se prendre la tête. Je vois plein de filles en porter, plein de filles les piner (lol)(non mais vraiment, voilà, j’ai atteint le fond du trou du franglais) sur Pinterest et hop, qu’est-ce qui est revenu faire un tour à mon poignet l’autre jour ? Une montre.
C’est marrant d’observer que le tout arrive au moment où la Apple Watch est à deux doigts d’être lancée. Je l’ai essayée la dernière fois et elle est aussi géniale qu’effrayante (bracelet d’esclave anyone ?) mais à mon avis, on n’a pas fini d’en entendre parler.
Vous portez une montre, vous ? Ou comme moi, vous n’en voyez plus vraiment l’utilité ?
Nothing makes me feel so bullet proof as my Cartier tank. I wear it as an elegant accessory even if I sometimes use my computer to check the time. I will never give up my watch. :-)

I love my watch! It’s a very simple Tagheuer – I wouldn’t trade it for all the gold in the world, though. Checking time on your iPhone does not have the same appeal to me. Besides the regular watch, I have a watch that I take for running. It has GPS and what-have-you to register the pace, heart rate, distance, etc. I hope that watches are never substitutet with smartphones!
I wear my Citizen ecodrive (no battery!) nearly every day. To me it looks chic, simple, and adds a subtle message that I’m a responsible adult. It’s so timeless and never looks like you’re trying too hard. It’s beautiful AND useful. One of the most romantic things ever left on my bedside table in the morning was my love’s Rolex.
I have a David Yurman watch. It’s wonderful because it’s like a fine bracelet and a great watch at the same time, and is very versatile. There are times, though, when I decide not to wear a watch — just so I can re-set my inner clock. It’s amazing how accurate your sense of time can be even without a watch or timepiece.
I don’t carry a mobile or smartphone . Crazy in these times, I know. It’s bliss, though, and I’m not often inconvenienced because of it. It helps me stay in the moment. You just need to make sure to plan things to make it work– the way people used to do! I know this won’t be forever, but am enjoying it while I can!
It was for long time the symbols of elegance tell me the watch you have i will tell you who you are….but the smartphone changed all that…maybe we will have a come back …. with the Apple watch..

I love my watch, one step up from a sun dial, with its roman numerals! It’s a man’s watch. With it’s poetic, large round face, black numerals and cobalt blue hands set in stainless steel, it’s a beauty. Also, I reflexively look at my wrist for the time because it’s easier for me than getting my phone out of my pocket.
Always wear a watch, okay, except when I’m actually bouldering or in a yoga practice or getting a bath(stop now Si, they get the picture…). The Apple watch doesn’t appeal though; I like something simple and analogue. You know, something to tell me what time it is where I am. I’m saving currently for either a Panerai Luminor or a Tudor Ranger, close to my ideal watches.
Watch. Never on holidays! :) Checking time on my smartphone was making me nauseous in the first months of my pregnancy – I guess the body knows how many glances at the screen a day is within limits. Otherwise I am for simplifying – slow movement/fuller life.

I love my watch. Is the only piece of jewellery that I wear every day (well, apart from my wedding ring, of course). It belonged to my grandfather and when he died I asked if I could keep it. It’s quite big for my wrist, but I don’t care. I find it beautiful and everytime I look at it I remember my nonno. So, no other watches for me, no matter how beautiful they are. I have the perfect one.

Interesting article! actually, I love my watch and it´s the only item I never take off (except when I really dress up, as it´s a sports watch): Tag Heuer, expensive, but very special because I received it as a gift when my daughter was born. I know, time flies, but somehow this watch makes me fell « grounded ».
J’adore porter ma montre (la ponctualité c’est mon truc) mais en fait comme je la porte au poignet droit ça me gène quand je travaille à l’ordo avec ma souris et je suis obligée de l’enlever… quitte à l’oublier souvent. C’est dommage. Je n’ai pas envie de toujours ouvrir mon sac à main pur farfouille et trouver mon portable pour y voir l’heure. Ce’s pour ça que pour moi porter une montre et avoir un téléphone ce n’est pas redondant. A moins que tu tiennes ton smartphone à la main en permanence ? (vive les ondes !)
I have loved watches since I was a little girl, and still do. Don’t have any super-expensive ones (unless you count the Movado and Gucci ones I bought in the 1990s, and still have). But I collect vintage ones from Ebay and other places. I probably have around 15, and the three most cherished are my original Girl Scout watch from the 1970s, and my father’s two watches that came to me when he died. One I’d bought him back in the 90s (I worked in a jewelry store), a Seiko, and the other is a Geneve.
I seem to like a larger dial as I get older (maybe that’s just an eyesight thing!) so I pretty much only buy men’s watches now. But I’ll never stop buying (or wearing) them. :)
MUST wear my watch or I feel out of sorts all day! Who wants to pull out the phone just to check the time???
It’s strange, but I’ve never found wearing a watch necessary. Many people do, but I guess I’m just not a watch kind of person. I like to pretend that time doesn’t pass by ;) Besides, if I was to buy one, I’d like to go for something really beautiful, and those tend to be pricey, just as you say. Of course, there are some budget-friendly options, but many of them are more sporty type, which is not really my style.

I will never give up my watch! I hate digging my phone out of my bag just to learn the time, and if I need to power down my phone to save the battery, I still know what time it is.
I think that watches are coming back because it’s much easier to discreetly glance at your watch than at your phone. If you are with friends, or at a meeting, or whatever, taking out your phone looks like you are checking your messages — and that gives off the « I’m not really here » vibe.
I hardly ever take off my Cartier Pasha. I love the idea of wearing a time counter on my hand. And since my phone is not always in my hand and my watch is always on my hand, I always know what time it is.
Watch. Every day. I have two – one for travel especially being in rural areas of Africa and Asia on design trips. It is a Timex Expedition. Love it. The other, also Timex from the 1960s a teeny, tiny gold plated watch so ladylike the total opposite of my rugged Expedition. I cannot live without a watch. Love this story. Thanks!
Un coup d’oeil a ma montre au poignet me suffit pour savoir l’heure. Je n’ai jamais mon telephone a portee de main, il est au fond du sac et le temps que je le sorte, quelques minutes ont passe ! (J’exagere a peine !) :=)
I LOVE my watch. I wear it almost every day. I also only date men who wear watches. I don’t care if it’s a G-Shock, Timex, Rolex, whatever. Any watch is fine. A watch whispers « I’m going places. My time is important. » People who wear watches are more mindful of time and how to use it. Also,if you glance at a watch during a conversation it is barely noticeable but if you look at a phone to check time it can be seen as offensive.

I love my watch, and I wear it every day. I find it much more practical to look at my wrist when I’m on-the-go than to dig my phone out of my purse. Plus, like other commenters have said, sometimes it’s nice to leave your phone behind and go out into nature!
Also, my watch has sentimental value as it was a graduation gift, and it’s still really the only piece of ‘nice’ jewelry I own that I can wear every day. I think I associate it with being a stable adult too, because it is a style that many of the adults in my life wore when I was a teenager!
Hummm il y a quelques semaines j’avais encore envie de l’Apple watch, et c’est mon copain qui m’a très justement dit qu’avec ce nouveau gadget les montres allaient perdre leur côté intemporel. Le succès de l’horlogerie c’est cette vieille mécanique qui fonctionne de génération en génération, or avec l’apple watch les gens devront acheter une montre tous les ans et encore consommer pour éviter l’obsolescence … Et la transmission de ce bijou familial et toute cette symbolique du temps qui entoure la montre traditionnelle moi je ne veux pas la perdre… Alors non à ce gadget aussi attirant que flippant !
Tout pareil, les miennes sont dans ma boite à bijou depuis presque un an et demi.. J’aime bcp le style très épuré des montres proposées. Ca donne envie d’aller acheter des piles et de reporter les miennes !
Moi j’ai arrêté d’en porter depuis belle lurette, même avant d’avoir un portable, je crois, c’est dire !
Celles qui sont sur les photos me donneraient presque envie d’en porter à nouveau !

Last year my Dad gave me the first Rollex he ever bought my Mom. It’s older then I am and classic and stunning. It’s a bitter smaller then I would pick out for myself but I love, mostly because it was my Mom’s and now I feel as if I get to wear her and my Dad with me everyday. It’s the second watch my Dad has given me, means a lot more then the first but I’m not sure I would buy myself a watch since having this Rollex just to special.
Il y a effectivement une époque (lointaine déjà!) où je ne pouvais pas vivre sans ma montre, classique, indémodable, offerte par ma grand-mère. J’ai d’abord arrêté de la porter le weekend, puis le reste du temps dès qu’il faisait chaud.
Maintenant, elle est, comme la tienne, dans ma boîte à bijoux et je trouve ça triste. En plus, il y a un côté sentimental qui me fait envisager de changer de pile et vérifier qu’elle fonctionne toujours! Et peut-être la porter occasionnellement comme un bijou?
Par contre, je ne suis pas du tout attirée par la Apple Watch! Pourtant, je suis en général plutôt fan de leurs produits… A suivre.

First of all, I truly love these black&white photos! So simple yet chic!
When it comes to watch, I personally do not wear any (and never did) but this is all because I come from the 90’s generation when the new technologies blasted. On the other hand, I find /some/ watch extremely stylish and timeless. I think, one should own one, max two watches since it’s not an accessory. Watch should be the item worth investing in (not your year salary) but let’s say, it’s gonna accompany you during your lifetime thread /literally/ :).
My personal faves are those with a simple, classy design like Rolex, Cartier Tank etc.

Incapable de sortir sans ma montre, comme sans parfum, je me sens nue et il manque quelque chose à mon poignet ! J’ai beaucoup allégé mes poignets ces dernières années mais ma montre reste mon essentiel même si je ne sors pas non plus sans mon iphone ;)

I wear my beloved Cartier tank every day – I always liked its design, and my godmother had one. After her death, her husband (my godfather) gave her Cartier to me as a gift – and he, too, died a few months later. Whenever I’m wearing the watch now, I feel like their love and support is still with me. This may sound kitschy, but I’d truly be devastated if I ever lost it!!!
So, as Jennifer says, it would be hard to tempt me with any other watch!
(And for some reason, I can’t stand wearing a watch while making music/playing musical instruments or doing yoga. What’s up with that?!)

Pareil, tellement pris l’habitude de regarder sur mon portable que je mets de moins en moins souvent ma montre. J’en ai trouvé une il y a quelques années pour laquelle j’ai eu un véritable coup de coeur. Je l’ai prise du côté homme, parce que les grosses montres et le masculin-féminin c’est mon truc. Elle n’est pas énorme non plus, juste ce qu’il faut. J’adore la mettre avec les manches de mon blazer retroussées … Au final je la vois plus comme un gros bracelet que comme un truc qui donne l’heure. Mais j’aimerais bien reprendre l’habitude et me faire une petite collection sympa :)

I have my father’s windup Hamilton watch; it’s older than I am.
Yes, I do, I have actually 3 of them, for a veryyy long time I was fine without one, as I was able to actually judge the time myself pretty well (seriously!) and then I got a job in events management when I had to watch carefully the massing minutes, so I got myself a nice and for my budget pretty expensive watch by Michael Kors, on silver steel bracelet which I absolutely love. Then I wanted another of his watches in gold plated version but that was too expensive this time and I got myself a cheaper version form Fossill, which is rose gold and nice with a dress. Don’t even get me started on Rolexes, I wish I could get one!
Je ne quitte pas ma Rolex…même si depuis plusieurs mois, elle ne me donne plus vraiment l’heure. Elle déconne, il faut que je la donne à réviser mais ça coûte un bras (justement) alors je remets ça tout le temps à plus tard. La lose quoi ! :-)

I always wear a watch, and have a number of them. My favorites are my Cartier Tank Louis and my Hermes Cape Cod. I will never give up wearing a watch because I do not want to ever be a person who has a phone attached to them. I want to be in the moment, not looking like or being someone who is looking at their phone all the time, searching for something more interesting than the person in front of me.
I love my watch, which I nicked form my husband. It’s big and classic and I use it for so many thing (but not for checking the time actually). I glance at it when people waste my time to shown them we done, to signal that the conference is over, to dress up man’s white shirt (also nicked from my man :)

In the past, I stopped wearing my watch for a while (my watch is a graduation gift from my parents and at that point in my life, it didn’t feel ‘young’ or ‘cool’ to wear one)… until the day my house got robbed. My watch was one of the few valuable things I had that was not stolen. I took it to the watch repair store to get a new battery the next day, and have worn it every day ever since! It made me realize how precious it was to me. It’s just not the same as checking the time on my iPhone, sorry!

J’adore les montres présentées ( surtout la première ), elles sont si élégantes.
Je ne porte pas encore de montre parce que je me suis promise que je m’offrirai une belle montre ( une qui a déjà vécu, une montre de seconde main ) avec mes premiers salaires sans doute ( dans quelques années donc ) ( et vu que Hermès est l’une des marques que je préfère…). Et puis je me sens un peu « gêné » ( ou plutôt un peu bête, je ne sais pas trop ) de sortir mon portable juste pour regarder l’heure, c’est pour ça que j’ai souvent mon ancienne montre à gousset dans mon sac ( c’est incroyable comme la plupart des gens, dans le métro lillois par exemple, sont fascinés quand je remonte ma montre ^^ )

I like watches but all my needles have stopped. I’ve got to take them all to the shop. My only little complaint about watches is that I tend to walk a lot and I don’t like how sweat stains the band. I bought a Swatch hoping that because it is plastic, it wouldn’t be so bad but it feels gross and sweat gets caught and is hard to take off. Any suggestions?
No! Not at all, because I don’t use a cellphone, at least not an accessory. I have a white plastic double round (?) cheap Swatch and I just love it, I actually check the time on it, so …perfect!
I feel like the more we have single objects that do everything, the more I appricate objects that do only one thing. I love wearing a watch more now then I did when they were needed for telling time.

I would rather have a watch than finer jewelry. I have several expensive timepieces (Raymond Weil, Longines, etc) and several fashion-trendy watches to have fun with. I don’t want to have to have my phone in my hand constantly. There are too many more interesting things to do with my hands.
I can’t live without my watch. Nothing fancy but it’s become a part of me!

I rejoiced the moment I realized I’d ever have to wear a watch again. Y’all can keep your Reines de Naples. I’ll use the clock!
Pendant longtemps, je me suis contentée de mon téléphone, en me disant « il y a l’heure dessus, je n’ai pas besoin d’une montre en plus ». Et puis, pour fêter ma réussite aux concours, mes parents mon offert une montre. Une belle montre de luxe, que je porte encore aujourd’hui.
Et il faut dire qu’aujourd’hui, je ne saurais plus me passer de ma montre. Elle me manque les rares fois ou je l’oublie. J’aime pouvoir lire l’heure sans avoir à sortir mon téléphone de mon sac. Elle me permet aussi de lire l’heure sans être happée par toutes les notifications de mon téléphone (bien souvent, je ne le sortais que pour lire leur, pour finalement finir par y passer beaucoup trop de temps !).
Donc non seulement ma montre est un bel objet, que j’aime a porter, qui me permet de savoir quand je suis, mais aussi de gagner beaucoup de temps !
J’économise pour une montre Seiko automatique qui va vieillir avec moi. Mes deux vaillantes Swatch sont mortes et franchement, ne pas avoir facilement l’heure me pèse (j’ai un vieux téléphone portable de l’ère pré-cromignon, perdu au fond de mon sac = plus ch*** à chercher que d’embêter qqun en demandant l’heure).
J’adore ma montre ! Même si je ne la regarde pas pour l’heure (c’est un comble !) mais c’est mon bijou préféré. Sans elle, je me sens nue…
I love watches and I always will :)….I started wearing them as a young teenager and since than I always have it on my wrist. It is around 25 years. I found them useful and they are excellent accessory and even though I love my iphone and all these electronic gadgets I’m not going to get rid off my precious watches :)
I gave up on watches. It gave me more rest not looking at my wrist all the ‘time’ ;-D. And I’m never late for anything. You get more feeling with the time. Sometimes my man and I guess for the time and we almost guess it to the minute (it can be 10 minutes more or less). Having nothing on my wrists, no watch, no bracelet, it feels good, it feels light, and it’s never in the way of your sleeves. I still love a real ‘ticking’ watch but for now I do it without. But if you want/love them, than wear them!
Always Cartier, even if it’s as heavy as my Roadster that I wear every day for last few years…Actually thinking to change it, a new tank extra think looks so beautiful and classical. I like Rolex too but they became kind of vulgar lately, everyone is wearing it. I like mostly vintage pieces. Hope we will not end up all with Apple watch;)…
Je travaille justement dans le monde passionnant de la Haute Horlogerie et mon regard a vraiment changé sur le concept. Un beau mécanisme complexe horloger ne remplacera jamais les gadgets – même s’ils sont géniaux! – comme la nouvelle Apple Watch.
Mais je sais néanmoins que ces montres sont chères, que c’est un produit de luxe qui n’est pas à la portée de tout le monde. Et même moi, je ne porte pas ma montre tous les jours, mon téléphone étant toujours à portée de main:-)
Comme toi j’ai depuis longtemps remisé ma montre dans la boite a bijoux, et je n’en porte plus ou presque. Il faut dire que je travaille sur l’ordi toute la journée donc j’ai l’heure constamment sur le Mac. Pour l’Apple Watch, vu l’autonomie et le prix, je ne pense pas que çà marchera si fort que cela. Pour le moment c’est la communauté Geek qui va l’aquérir je pense.
I can’t imagine walking out without a watch. It feels like a part of my body. Usually I have this simple and inexpensive Festina but in summer I start wearing a watch that my father gave me. It is a man’s watch he himself got when he was a 9 year old boy. He cleaned it and repaired for me yet no changes were done that would erase the charm of OLD. I bought a lovely leather band for it and the whole thing makes a lovely statement piece. Lots of strangers ask me about the watch :-)
Am I the only one that didn’t realize watches were out? I love them, especially on men.
Watches were « out »? Welcome back then you guys. I haven’t stopped wearing one since I got my first at age 8. I’ve had my current one for 5 years and I only remove it to shower. I even swim with it. I do actually live quite a lot of screen free life!
I love watches, and think they are one of the best accessories for any outfit. No Apple watches for me. ;)
Since my dear Dad passed away almost 14 years ago, I’ve worn his Rolex, a prized possession of his and a constant reminder of him for me. I have a Tag Heuer diver’s watch I bought for myself when I got my Advanced Diving certificate in Bermuda years ago and a beautiful Baume Mercier Catwalk that my company paid for when I had my 10th anniversary there. I also have a Hermes Cape Cod that I bought myself when I went out on my own. I love my watches, they are all very significant to me and I can’t think that a day will come when I won’t put one on first thing each morning.

Toujours avec une montre et jamais de téléphone (!) J’en ai plusieurs pour divers usages. La plus légère => Bzero1 de Bulgari, elle est super l’été et à conseiller à celles qui n’ont pas toujours envie de sentir un poids à leur poignet.
