Mais un chapeau, c’est comme de belles chaussures, là aussi les gens te regardent. Ils peuvent donc regarder tes pieds mais non ta tête ? C’est dommage… :)

I am a hat lover. It sounds so indecent when I say it like that. But I do love them. I have a leopard print one, a gray stetson, a yellow and black (bee hat) one and a brown and black one. After seeing this, I am probably going to go for a red one too!
Un chapeau, je trouve ça magnifique personnellement! Puis chacun a un style qui lui est propre, si on commence à prendre compte de l’avis et des regards des autres, on pourrait oublier bon nombre de pièces incontournables d’un dressing!

i am hesitant to wear hats, usually because they are ill-fitted, either too big or too small. i was just commenting last night, i wish milliners were still abundant, and you could easily and affordably get a custom-made hat.
if you find a hat you enjoy, it suits your hair and face and head shape, i believe you can rock it garance, with your smart style, good humor, and humble self-confidence. go for it.

Je trouve que le chapeau ne devrait pas se limiter qu’à un phénomène de mode du aux récentes FW… C’est une jolie pièce, après on a une tête à chapeau ou pas…
Je pense qu’un Fedora te va bien pour ce que j’ai vu, après rouge, vert ou bleu, tant que tu sais jouer avec les couleurs c’est ce qui compte…
Par ex : chino, chemise blanche, ballerines rouges, et chapeau rouge, pour une journée ensoleillée, je crois que tu ne devrais pas dire non !

Le pire c’est que je suis convaincue que ce n’est pas qu’une impression, tout le monde te regarde certainement… Premièrement, parce que ça te va super bien, deuxièmement parce que les gens n’osent pas en mettre pour diverses raisons, entre l’éventuel coté « too much »… Alors forcément quand la Garance en met un, ça suscite la curiosité et peut être l’admiration …

OH MY GOD! that`s exactly what happens to me!! I get dressed specially to wear the hat, i put it on, then i go out, and star feeling that everyone is looking at me, so i take it off!! and then i want to put back on, and i dont have a mirror so i think that it looks awfull, or my hair is a mess, etc… but i still believe that someday i will pul that look off!!!

I love hats. I read a marvelous quote from a very stylish older woman who said « Hats are the last romantic thing. » If that doesn’t give you courage to don a hat, what will? In fact, you inspired me to snap up a beaver felt Borsalino fedora from the men’s department at the recent Barneys Warehouse sale and I adore wearing it. I feel so 1940’s glamourous.

C’est vrai que pour être vraiment à la mode, il faut oser, ce que je n’arrive pas d’ailleurs, c’est pour ça que souvent je tombe dans la facilité, et j’opte pour du noir, brun, kaki,… alors que je rêve de fluo et de couleurs à la Prada. J’ai toujours admiré Anna Dello Russo pour ça, elle a une espèce d’assurance admirable, qui rend toutes ses tenues crédibles. Je pense que la mode est une très bonne thérapie pour apprendre à avoir confiance en soi et pour ne pas trop se prendre au sérieux. Bon allez, je sors, je met mes lunettes Prada. (que je n’ai toujours pas oser mettre grrr)

Ce chapeau est juste magnifique, en plus il ressort super bien sur ce fond blanc! Peut être que les gens te dévisagnent tt simplement parce qu’ils n’osent pas en porter, et qu’ils se rendent compte que c’est super joli et à quel point il donne de l’allure, c’est original, et que tu as une certaine préstance avec.

No, that’s the reason why I always chicken out when wearing high heels. I feel like the noise from my shoes attracts so much attention. I have these amazing shoes that I hardly ever wear because I feel like everyone’s eyes are on me!

Ah splendide cette photo ! Trop drôle j’ai enfin trouvé mon chapeau hier (couleur sable) et je l’ai porté toute la journée avec ce même feeling que toi. Je me suis forcée à ne pas l’enlever pour ne pas céder à cet étrange sentiment que les gens vous observent. Je crois que ça leur donne envie d’en avoir un, de se dire que finalement c’est sympa, et qu’en vérité ce n’est en rien si original ! Les couleurs des fedora de Gucci sont sublimes !

Adore the hat and the color! I know EXACTLY what you’re saying, Garance, I used to feel the same way and was very uncomfortable. But I love hats and the way they look so I became determined to just not care, which I think is the secret of wearing a hat successfully. People DO look at you, but if you love the hat and know you look good in it, then it’s a good thing, n’est pas?! You have to cultivate the « I look fabulous and don’t care that you know it » attitude. ;)

Well i have to say that the moment i read this article it was like we were thinking about the same thing and also feeling the same!there were not many times that i tried to wear a hat but in every one of them i ended up holding it instead!i hope one day i will overcome this shyness and be able to wear anything i want without feeling that all the eyes around me are on me (in a bad way).

Commence par mettre des rubans colorés, une plume, sur des chapeaux neutres, vas-y doucement.
Ou bien fais-toi un traitement de choc en allant essayer un haut de forme de chapelier fou, des bibis et autres cloches, tellement dingues qu’ensuite, ce chapeau rouge que tu nous montres paraîtra classique et basique, pas trop, juste beau !
Après si le problème c’est d’être regardée, y’a aussi deux solutions : soit tu acceptes le fait que c’est toi et ton joli minois, ta silhouette, ton élégance que les gens regardent, et tu souris en retour, soit tu penses que c’est juste le chapeau et alors le mieux c’est de porter en même temps des shoes de folie (des Zanotti scintillantes par exemple). Lles gens seront désorientés, ne sachant s’ils doivent regarder en haut ou en bas :)
Quoi qu’il arrive, c’est toi qui gagnes !

Bon, une fois j’ai eu la même réflexion (et même fait un post sur le sujet).
Je trouve qu’il faut être très sûre de soi même pour le porter, at aussi, ça dépend du pays.
En Europe il est un accessoire utile pour le clima, soit en hiver pour donner un peu de chaleur soit en été pour se protéger du soleil…et tout avec du style.
En Amérique Latine, il est plutôt part d’un déguisement que d’un tenue quotidien.
Moi, je les portes souvent et oui, je m’aperçu être regardée. ;)

Forget the stares, that is nothing… they stare at your shoes, they stare at all your fashiony choices. There are bigger problems. I only wore my newest olive wool Indiana Jones style hat once, if you don’t count going to the mailbox and to drop off the rent. I was soooo excited about buying it since I’ve wanted it for years.
Anyway, the wide brim and slightly upturned sides can change the look of the outfit a lot, so that you have to dress around the hat, make it more feminine. The biggest problem was that I couldn’t type with it on–my eyes felt strained from the angle I kept holding my head (and maybe from looking up at the brim?)–so I have to take it off at work (then walk around with ‘hat-head’). Anyway, my boss said it made me look a bit like a pimp when worn with a furry black vest. I’m hoping to wear it more soon, since it is still cold outside and water resistant, but I admit it looks so cute with a short dress and sandals. Damn it.
I have the same problem, I bought a fabulous fedora last summer and I still haven’t dared to wear it!

Don’t be afraid of wearing red hat. You should be afraid that people will ask you IT (linux) related questions ;-) All members of company Red Hat own the same hat and some of them are wearing it.

Mais, moi qui adore les chapeaux et dispose – pour une fois que j’ai un avantage !- d’une « vraie tête à chapeau », j’ai la même tendance: porter un chapeau le matin et l’abandonner dans mon sac le soir…

The thing with a hat is to wear one when you really need to shield yourself from the sun or rain. I think that you feel silly wearing one when you don’t need it, i.e. when you’re just wearing one to be « fashionable ». And for those of us not being photographed on our way to fashion shows, or photographing ourselves, being fashionable isn’t the goal but being stylish is. It’s magic having a waterproofed, wide brimmed felt hat on in the rain. They let you walk at a leisurely pace, while others are hunched and running or cowering under doorways. That’s stylish ;-)
I have always loved wearing hats. I have a head for hats! But ever since I started wearing combs in my hair, five years ago, hats are no longer an option for me. Now all I can do is admire the bravado of others who can pull them off as well as the women in your beautiful photo.

Je vis dans un pays où il pleut tout le temps … heu … beaucoup .. j’ai plusieurs chapeaux, des bonnets … rien de tel pour rester bien coiffée et au chaud !

Le chapeau, c’est plutôt mille fois oui sachant que lors d’un récent séjour à Milano j’ai failli craquer pour un Borsalino (et sa boîte, ne mentons pas)… noir. Mais je me suis dit que j’arriverai jamais à le caser à Paris, ni à l’assumer sur ma tête, ni à ne pas l’abîmer dans le métro bondé.
Le rouge… oui en chaussure, oui en pochette, oui aux lèvres, oui aux ongles, oui en joli t-shirt… en chapeau j’ai du mal, surtout avec une veste marron! Rouge + marron } grrr ça me fille des frissons!
J’espère que cette explication était plus… explicative que mon « non » précédent! ;-)

i ve got exactly the same problem, i have a beautiful big hat which is falling dont very elegantly, at home i feel gorgious but just when i step out of my door i feel so weird, cause everybody is watching me like im some kind of alien…
but we should give it a shot and not hesitate just because people dont acknowledge are style!!

I have a Borsalino still in the box. I love hats but never quite gather enough confidence to wear them with a nonchalant attitude. I also feel like either I cannot think with them on or they are on the way especially if I’m with my boyfriend. lol I have a theory once you do it right the first time, you will gain that confidence…still waiting for my first time.

je comprends tout à fait… il y a quelques années de cela, je ne pouvais sortir sans un chapeau… j’en avais de toutes les formes, de toutes les couleurs… et puis, j’ai grandi et avec, est apparu un certain gêne quand les gens me regardaient comme si j’étais un zinzin de l’espace (ouh là! quelle référence!)… bref, j’ai pris peur… pas cool, hein!

Il faut se lancer ……. L’ideal : se faire conseiller par un designer de chapeaux qui te choisi le tien,un simple pour tous les jours , ca m’est arrivé et maintenant je l’ai adopté mon chapeau. En fait il avait l’oeil et m’a debarrassé de mes inhibitions, car j’étais comme toi j’avais peur de tomber dans le déguisement tout en revant d’en porter un, mais ca passe beaucoup mieux qu’on ne peux le penser, à chaque fois j’ai eu des compliments!
j’adore le rouge!puis faut dire que c’est une couleur classe et chic (avec le noir)!en plus le chapeau est splendide mais dommage que j’en porte pas moi!!oui je ne porte pas de chapeaux:(

In my country when you were hat it’s like you are an alien, my father shares the same taste I have for hats and he brought me such nice orange hat from Florence, I’ve never had courage to really use it. Because when I used others everybody looked to me like an alien.
I hope one day I get more confidence about that and be able to use it :)

J’ai un chapeau rouge et je suis persuadée que quand je le porte tout le monde me regarde.
Il y en a deux types : le regard genre « Wow quel beau chapeau, qu’est-ce que ça lui va bien » et « C’est quoi ce chapeau de clown ? » – comme j’habite en province le 2ème type est le plus fréquent.
I don’t mind it when people with good style sense check out me in my hat, because they are checking out my fashion and clothing choice. However, I find that whenever I wear a hat, older men often look at me :-(, and that makes me take it off, and discourages me from wearing it as often as I would like.

I love how hats look, but don’t really like how they feel. Plus, I can’t take photos with a hat on, and I’m always ready to take a photo. So, I put it on, and like you, end up taking it off. I love how they look on other people, though. I think a hat makes you look confident and cool. Just went to Las Vegas, and it seems like hats are making a comeback.

C’est drôle, pour les gens je suis la nana folle de mode (malgré mon boulot dans la restauration) et on me dit souvent que l’on attend de voir ce que je porte pour voir ce qu’est j’ai encore pu me « dégoter », ça me fait rire, car certe je ne m’habille pas comme tout le monde tout en essayant de respecter « mon corps et ce qui lui va » longtemps que j’ai abandonné le slim vu mes cuisses, mais quel plaisir quand on me dit que j’ai vraiment « un style à part » tout ça parce que J’ ASSUME et que je me sens bien, c’est le plus important!!!!
I have the same fear. Love hats, but people really do notice you more. I remember one year around Christmas I was wearing a red hat, and some lady pointed at me and loudly declared to her friend « look, how festive? » since then the hat does not come out anytime near Christmas.
I own a red hat. It spend months in my room above a chair looking at me saying
« you don’t have the guts to wear me ». Until one day i did. I also had that feeling
that everybody was looking at me which made me feel incredibly uncomfortable.
When my closest friends saw me wearing it all reacted the same way « oh! i am so jealous, i’ve always wanted to wear a red hat but i don’t know if i could pull it off ».
At that moment i realized how silly it all was. We were all secret red hat lovers
My point is, try to beat that first sense of… embarrasment? And you will find
yourself smiling under the hat brim.

I like to dress fashion with new stuff and everything, but I dont like to call the attention very much, hard thing since those 2 likes are kind of opposite, dont you think? :S
You know what? Just let them look all they want. People are wired to look at pretty things, you can always take that it as a compliment. Just don’t overdo it. Haha Big hugs!
Sadly, I know what you mean. However, people are just looking at the bold woman, confident enough to wear a hat in public! (at least that’s what I tell myself.)

omg i love hats too but i totally feel self conscious when i wear one. i feel like everyone is looking at me like im ridiculous or like im trying too hard. its funny, cause some people feeling as if they are hiding when they wear a hat, but i think it takes real guts. hats are fab!
