Il y a des trucs comme ça, je les collectionne.
Je ne sais pas trop comment ça commence, ni vraiment comment ça finit* mais ça me fait toujours ça avec les vêtements dans lesquels je me sens bien, qui vont avec tout, qui se lavent facilement**, et qui n’ont pas de saison.
Je dois avoir 6 chemises en jean. Il y en a même une que j’ai achetée en triple. La Maje en photo, là ? Pas pu résister : une en jean délavé et deux en jean brut, vu que le brut, ça se délave, inexorablement***. Et que je sais que chez des marques comme Maje, les vêtements ne restent en boutique qu’une saison, voir deux maximum…
C’est ça qui m’énerve. La chemise en jean est un classique, mais je n’ai pas encore trouvé LA marque qui fait LA parfaite chemise en jean et que je pourrai retrouver tous les ans si je veux. Tout le monde fait du jean, et pourtant impossible de mettre la main sur le classique parfait. Même Levi’s n’a pas une coupe de chemise en jean qui reste la même quoi que la mode fasse. Leurs modèles changent tout le temps.
On devrait pouvoir en acheter comme on achète des Converse, des chemises Equipment, des ballerines Repetto, des marinières LeMinor… Un vrai classique, quoi !!!

** Ça fait con de dire ça, mais je suis du genre à oublier dans un sac derrière une porte les vêtements destinés au pressing. Puis une fois qu’ils sont au pressing, je les oublie au pressing. Donc les vêtements qui vont au pressing, en fait, je dois les mettre à peu près deux fois par an.
*** Sur ma peau ou mes vêtements, tout aussi inexorablement.

Encore plus dure à trouver la chemise parfaite en chambray. Parfaite c’est à dire pour femme, déjà, parce que pour homme y en a des biens, mais trop grandes du coup.
Et parfaite dans son tissus, sa couleur, ses finitions, que quand tu la rentres dans ton pantalon, tu n’es pas boudinée. Qu’elle soit pas raide et qui pique. C’est tellement introuvable que tu as tendance à en acheter plein (trop) sans jamais atteindre le nirvana de la chemise en chambray.
Moi aussi je devrais peut-être créer ma marque.

Sans rire, t’as totalement raison. D’autant que LA chemise en jean parfaite est introuvable. J’en ai une Zara, elle était trop longue, alors je l’ai coupée. Puis elle s’est déformée et agrandie avec le temps. Maintenant, elle est VRAIMENT trop grande, mais je l’aime quand même alors bon. Puis pas trouvée de remplaçante.

(Déjà que tu m’as convaincue pour les chemises Equipment héhé, j’en ai trouvé une à 35 euros sur eBay, elle est PARFAITE).

Let’s add great chino pants and shorts to the list as well as the perfect white silk blouse. One that’s not too sheer or doesn’t have twee pockets that sit oddly on your bosom! Oh, and fabulous tortoise eyeglass frames like Catherine Deneuve has on in the YSL documentary. Like a lot of great movies, classics aren’t always improved upon when « updated. »
I think I had a trauma in my teens as I used to wear denim shirts a lot, (probably because of the serie Beverly hills 90210 heheh) And since then I never bought one again…
Who knows… Maybe this year…

I have the same problem. I cannot find a denim shirt with a perfect fit! My H&M one is not long enough to tuck and my gap one is too loose! I would consider going into business with you in the denim shirt company but I also leave clothes at the cleaners. Such is life!

I completely agree, although there are some brands that do the same ‘classics’ all the time, they are never actually the same! I find this with little black boots and jumpers..aaand leather jackets!- things that you would have thought would be very useful to be able to go back to again and again! Guurr.

I still have a denim shirt from my first trip to Paris, as a student, Fiorucci. Recently I have been collecting antique cameos – a little bit of art to wear, and they stay in a pretty little butterfly case, not hidden in a drawer. Pendants, rings and brooches, stone, coral…love them.
GAP…always has a denim/ chambray shirt.

I agree. I’ve been looking for the perfect one for a while now too, I’d like mine to be slightly oversized and masculine in the tailoring, but not ridiculously big in the shoulders, and preferably lightweight with a little bit of drape to it, worn in looking but not overtly factory faded. Yes, it’s a long list of criteria, and that’s why I don’t have one. Maybe you should start your on line. That’s how these things happen, right? Someone gets frustrated that they can never find the perfect X, and they take matters into their own hands…

Ma chemise en jean préférée venait de Kiloshop, oui c’est vieux !!! Mais ma douce maman l’a jeté dès que j’ai eu le dos tourné (ainsi que mon jean flaire, ma chemise militaire, mon pantalon de pépé taille 44, ma longue veste en cuir verte à moumoutte, etc… oui j’avais un style de dingue au collège et au lycée). Bilan, j’en ai acheté une la semaine dernière une taille au dessus chez Hetmouille… elle taille pas comme celle de Kiloshop (ni les 12 autres qui ont précédé) !! Je cherche encooooooooore (et te tiens au courant ;p)

I collect denim shirts, white Ts and button ups, black turtlenecks, brogues, 501s, sneakers and chinos. I sound just like a boy but I’m not! Even more embarrassing is that I am « of an age » when I need a closet-archive director to find room.

La mienne – parfaite – vient de chez The Kooples. Je l’ai achetée il ya maintenant 3 ans et la porte été comme hiver avec des jupes ou des pantalons. Je viens d’en acheter une autre, en Chambray cette fois ci, chez J Crew. Elle est moins parfaite !

Chez J.Crew elles sont pas mal. J’en ai une de chez GAP Homme, en chambray, depuis au moins 7 ans, et elle me suit partout : a la plage, en voyage, en soiree avec des sandales Manolo. Elle s’use, « se patine », devient toute douce, un vrai Doudou.

J’ai acheté ma première chemise en jean à Zara hier. Je n’avais jamais pensé à en acheter. Je me suis toujours dit que ça n’était pas pour moi, mais en la portant aujourd’hui sur un cachemire col V Ralph Lauren un peu trop sage je me suis dit que j’avais peut-être raté un truc tout ce temps! (et réussi à cooliser un pull qui vous versaillise un jean troué! )

C’est vrai que j’ai toujours du mal a trouver LE grand classique que j’adore. Que se soit la chemise en jean, le t-shirt blanc ou pire, le jean lui même. Ces pièces basiques, qui vont avec tout et sont super simple a enfiler (et laver!) sur dur a trouver parfaitement coupé je trouve. Dommage.

I have at least a dozen jean shirts. I like the variation of color, fit, and buttons. Most are vintage Levi and that worn in fit is something you can never get with new clothing.

The denim shirt is a MAJOR trend right now. Fashion is much less likely to create an « classic » version of something that appears to be just a major trend, and would just run its course in the stores anyway. It’s just like vests were a major trend a few years ago; dispite their decidely « classic/basic » label, they were everywhere in the stores for a season or two and now you can’t find them anywhere. Maybe the denim shirt is something that will stay around, similiar to the skinny jean, which did not leave in five minutes, and continues to endure as this generations signature pant cut. Perhaps we just need to wait a little longer for the denim shirt to integrate its way into the everyday waredrobe of everyone, and become a true classic staple as it should be. The creation of a classic takes patience.

Je ne l’ai pas encore vue en personne, mais elle s’approche de ma chemise en jean/chambray (ouais, pour moi c’est qu’une catégorie!) idéale, j’adore le col et les poignets!

En plus, leurs collections sont permanentes!
Ma (seule) chemise en jean vient de chez Gap, côté hommes, et elle a de fines rayures blanches type chemise de travail. Elle est un peu grande même si je l’ai achetée en XS, mais je l’aime quand même. Aussi, je roule les manches en attachant le bouton de l’autre côté, comme si je les portais avec des boutons de manchettes– c’est mon petit truc en ce moment!

Les chemise pour hommes sont trop grandes pour moi (-> chemise de nuit…).
Du coup, je vais voir ce que les grandes marques proposent comme modèles classiques (sans logo etc.) aux jeunes hommes (taille 14 ans ou 16 ans). En coton blanc et en jeans, je trouve mon bonheur :-)
Je n’ai eu qu’une seule chemise en jean dans ma vie, il y a bien longtemps! Trop masculin, peut-être pour moi… Mais je comprends ton désarroi: moi, ce sont les les ballerines noires basiques que je cherche vainement de saison en saison!!

Just wanted to say that this is the 1st time I’m making a comment but I follow your blog daily because you’re such a remarkable illustrator and photographer. I’d highly recommend checking out Madewell for their denim shirt, they are very comfortable and produce them year round. I also like their fit as well and they’re not too ridiculously expensive. Would love to hear what your favorite brand of white jean is.
Not only are they easy to clean, on top they are super easy and fast to iron. And if you don’t have the time for ironing, you can wear them a little wringled and still they look cool!!
Clothes that need a lot of ironing and clothes that need dry cleaning… i wear a couple of times in a year…

J’ai passé tout mon après-midi d’hier à la chercher chez Zara (rien), H&M (rien), Maje (pas cette saison), Comptoir des Cotonniers (non), Sandro (non), etc. J’adore les chemises en jean, mais je cherche et je cherche et je n’ai pas encore trouvé LA chemise ou la marque qui fait LA parfaite chemise en jean. Mais je ne perds pas mon espoir!!
Cette obsession avec les chemises en jean est la même que j’ai avec les parkas militaires, que j’adore et je n’arrête pas de m’en achêter chaque saison et aussi les jeans blancs.

Excellent idea: start your own line! I am a denim shirt maniac myself. At the moment, I rotate between an Earl Jeans and a Gap. Always in the search of my next ‘new’ love as these two are really starting to show their age — time to put them away. So, yes, hurry with those denim shirts.

Ah ! LA chemise en jean !!!! Ma première, une levi’s, à l’âge de 15 ans… 15 ans plus tard elle a un petit goût de reviens-y (toutes mes excuses pour cette expression si peu glamour !) ! J’ai craqué pour une autre chemise – oserais-je l’avouer – de la marque Zara ! Et cette dernière est vraiment canon, extrêmement douce et fluide, d’un joli bleu, avec des poches et des coudières plus foncées, bref, adoptée !!!!

I bought a denim shirt from Zara a few years ago which I love but NEVER wear, and the reason for that is that the left sleeve is sewed on wrong. I mean the buttons at the end of the sleeve that normally live under your wrist is on top of the wrist and only on the left arm (the right one is correct). Mistake or what? Guess that went through QC (quality control) without anyone spotting it. I didn’t even spot it when I tried it on in the shop and yet, it still hangs in my closet hoping that one day I will wear it (everytime I put it on it looks as if I’ve twisted my arm in an unnatural way!). Now that I have gotten over my ‘sleeve phobia’ (2 years on), I just bought one that is kind of a denim shirt (blue chambray) from COS and the sleeves are correct this time.
If you do find that all-time classic denim shirt, do let us know where to get it…

Well, if you start making classic denim shirts. please let me know, because my fantasy is to have a shop of all the classics: the ones you mention, plus Levis 501s, white Keds sneakers, yellow oilcloth slickers, trench coats (Burberry? I’m not sure), real fisherman espadrilles and ditto striped knit shirts, perhaps Aran isle knit sweaters, crisp white shirts, perfect white t-shirts, leather jackets (biker?), cowboy boots, blue blazers… What else? Wellington boots or LL Bean boots, black and red « lumberjack » jackets… What for dress-up that wouldn’t just be dull. To be continued.

Moi, ma chemise en jean vient de chez American Apparel, et j’ai eu beau la prendre en small, elle est 4 fois trop grande… J’ai tout essayé pour la rétrécir, notamment la laver à 90′ peine perdue ! Sinon je viens de trouver le jean blanc parfait, 7/8, petite fente en bas, au Comptoir des Cotonniers. Attention il part à toute vitesse !

Again, let’s do lists.
The clothing items that I end up having tons of are:
1. Draped jersey dresses (no ironing included!): I got 1 royal blue, 1 green, 1 red, 1 azur, 1 violet, 1 black and numerous printed ones and I always sigh at the sight of them. This is actually my signature look.
2. (Ferragamo) Ballet flats (to match almost every outfit)
3. (Zara) cardigans (for winter and spring)
4. (Calvin Klein) underwear (amazing quality through the years!)
I’ll think of more and revert. But whenever I go shopping and keep listing the items I don’t have always end up buying at least one of the above.

Madewell! They have (in my humble opinion) the perfect denim shirt, and in multiple styles, too. Though as far as I can tell they always have the « Perfect Ex-Boyfriend » style in stock (year-round!)

J’aime la chemise jean aussi, et j’ai justement découvert la chemise « sleeveless », je l’aime beucoup! Plus facile à porter sous des autres vêtements comme les cardigans…

I’m not sure how long it will last, but an Australian brand aimed at maybe more at high school/uni students called Jay Jays make wonderful denim shirts. I got one last year, practically live in it and they have exactly the same cut this year. Maybe check them out? Also because of their target market, its pretty cheap so worth a look.

Même chose pour moi et ça fait plaisir de ne pas être la seule dans ce cas là ! Du coup je n’achète quasiment plus que des habits qui se lavent et qui -de préférence- n’ont pas besoin d’être repassés.
