  • Lots and lots of layers. I become an addict for them in the winter.

  • Plus, she IS wearing a hat!

  • I’m almost wishing for that sort of weather right about now; the high today in Dallas is 70 degrees! And then on Friday, 75! So much for all of my winter clothes…

  • Really cute and warm outfit!! During outfit I really like layering!!
    xoxo

  • OMG I wanted to say, during Winter I like layering! lol

    http://fashionthroughtravel.blogspot.com/

  • She looks great!
Nevertheless I don’t know how she can make it. I could’t survive without my ugly Canada Goose (or Moncler if I wanted to look a bit better) when I used to live there.

    xx Alice.

  • i look like a chocolate marshmallow in my huge brown puffy coat…… not chic.

    http://dallianceswithsuitsandskirts.blogspot.com/

  • En effet  » so chic » !! J’admire !!

  • Its so lovely, Garance, but in Ottawa, its -30C during an average winter… sometimes function needs to supersede fashion {Love the outfit, but it would never work in Ottawa, maybe in October or March…}

  • I love that cape. In California this year it hasn’t gotten below 40 (and that’s at night when you’re sleeping and don’t notice). So I haven’t had to bare the cold yet. I do love her look though.

  • The cold caught me by surprise today, it’s been so warm recently! Today was all about frumpy layers as I tried to remember how I dressed this time last year..

    http://www.kaytetmadison.com

  • I visited France and Holland this past November and was surprised to see more Canada Goose parkas there than I ever see through an Alberta winter in Canada. In western Canada (in the cities anyway) you’re more likely to see a woolen topcoat than a Canada Goose parka.

  • I agree with Justyna…this is for the warm winter here in Canada:P But seriously, I wish I can look that good like when it’s freezing. Smiling when it’s -23 outside is kinda hard…

  • she definitely knows how to rock a cape!

    http://brandnewbyanna.blogspot.com

  • I love playing with layers. I just don’t know how to do it.. :)

  • I love how real and un-fussy her look is.

  • In Atlanta you don’t really have to dress for the cold – even when it’s cold, because you only have to make it from your car to the building. However, I am coming up to NYC for Fashion Week, and I’m trying to prepare for the weather. I bought a beautiful fur coat (2nd hand) and have warm boots, but I’ve just realized that I don’t know what to do about my legs. I’m wondering if I’m going to have to forgo my cute skinny jeans and wear wool pants under which I can fit some leggings. Or I might wear a long wool skirt over my skinny jeans. What do you do for layers on your legs!!!

  • She looks great but she must be freezing… When I lived in Toronto, I never cared how I looked outdoors as long as I was warm. It was a rude shock to move to Europe and adjust to the winters here – the fact that it was much milder was great, but I had to really raise my game with prettier coats. Not to mention the twelve thousand techniques that the French have for tying scarves, very few of which I’ve mastered…but then, I’m Canadian, we just wrap them around our faces and that’s it!

  • Superbe!
Quelqu’un connaitrait la marque des boots? Frye?

  • In upstate NY, Brooklyn Industries red Fjord down coat, over the knee shearling boots, cashmere turtleneck, wool cardigan, skinny jeans or cords, cashmere/woolscarf, hat, gloves for outside ********************

  • Tres Chic. I love how casual she looks and the hat is perfect.

BTW…does anyone know who makes the bag she’s carrying? I need a great bag to hold my 15″ Mac and everything else.

    bisous
    Anne

  • I wear a really good vintage navy double breasted pea coat with lovely gold naval buttons on. It’s a rare find as it’s for men, but is a great shape for a woman.

  • with a big jumper!!

Take a look at my fashion illustrations and art:

    http://aliceauxpaysenchantes.blogspot.com/

  • She looks great, but I also question how warm she might be. Sunny and 60+ down here in coastal South Carolina. @Meredith –go to Unqlo when you arrive and get some of their thin heat-tech long johns and tees. Super thin for your skinniest jeans but super warm, too.

  • Amsterdam is supercold too! I love her outfit (especially the bag!). Happy Monday! xoxo

  • Moi, je porte:

tall leather boots with leg warmers underneath, pulled up over my knees
a camel toggle coat that is my St. Elmo’s Fire coat et que j’adore beaucoup!!!!
    jupe noir, pullover noir,
    knit scarf ENORME.

  • What is this bag? I’m intrigued….

  • Layers, layers, layers: cotton shirt, another shirt, big wooly jumper, leather jacket, huge warm scarf. Yay! And gloves.

  • The comments are kind of funny! I also live in Ottawa and indeed this sort of an outfit wouldn’t work at -20C. In fact, even at -5 it’s not a great idea to not be covering the ears and allowing in a draft…but that’s youth! That said, there are prettier options than the Canada Goose parka. I always buy my parkas when I’m in Italy. Oddly enough there’s an American brand (Woolrich) that seems to make a few parkas for the European market only that are much slimmer, lighter and prettier (without the massive crest on the arm), whilst still being sufficiently warm to -40 (with hoods and sometimes bands in front that are lined with soft, Canadian rabbit fur, ironically enough, for me at least – I tell my friends I’m repatrioting Canadian fur…) .

  • Brrrr! I think the down parkas in the Jil Sander collaboration with Uniqlo are brilliant. I LOVE MINE: very chic, very warm and very affordable!

  • Very chic. :)

  • Garance, can you do a footnote on her bag? It’s awesome. Please find out, pretty please.

  • Le sac est à tomber! Son sourire aussi:-)

  • I really love her style…she’s so beautiful!!

    Lens&anythingElse

  • After a very mellow start of January, temperatures have officially dipped to wintery levels in London city as well!
How do I cope? A mix of stylish and not so stylish tips – with the overall objective to seal any potential cold « entries ».
    – Uniqlo Heat-tech. I am a HUGE fan. Feels like the finest soft undergarment/tank tops BUT keep you warm like nothing else (available in a lots of colours for the bolder ones but I always stick to black/grey/creme)
    – Warm and Opaque tights
    – My very trusted Mentor biker boots (took me 5 years to find MY biker boots)
    – Wool dress (very often COS)
    – Very warm yet gorgeous to die for coat (Paul&Jo)
    – Wool chunk scarf (usually wrapped around my neck to seal out any breeze but can also be used as a head/ear covers when it gets real cold)
    – Last but not least leather and cashmere doubled gloves
AND lots of lip moisturiser and lip balm to protect that skin :)

  • As we say in Greece… like an onion. Lots of clothes layers.

A l hopital !

Moi , Addict ? A garance doré ? Nooon , quand même !
    Kat

  • Ah la la! Qu’il fait froid!!! Au secours! Brrrrrrrrrrrrr!

  • That’s funny, I’m Canadian and I had to google Canada goose, beyond the bird i had never heard of it before. I have to agree with the other Canadians that if it was truly cold, then she must be freezing.
Forget chic stay warm. I can’t believe I just said that.
But winter just hit where I live and it’s a fur trimmed down parka ( I have three in various shapes and lengths to go with different things) a pair of sorels(from before they started advertising in vogue) or a pair of fur trimmed columbias, which I wish I could wear around my house as slippers because they are so comfy cozy. Basically I ‘m going to look like the Michelin man until the thaw but really I don’t care. (except that on the week end I hit the January sales and bought 2 of the most beautiful pairs of boots that I’m dying to wear but don’t dare risk ruining in the snow).

  • the bag should be from coccinelle by the looks of its pattern

  • The ultimate goal of all chic and savvy girls. Warm and stylish. Capes are underrated. More capes!

    http://www.cassandrahsieh.com/

  • I love her look! Even though she looks cold..its always important to look the brrr in the face and say…NEXT!! Nothing is going to stop my look :-)

  • in new york as well and that outfit wouldn’t cut it for me; i would be freezing. after many winters here i and an initial reluctance to bundle up, i have found a good formula for the cold: wedge shearling booties (jcrew, par exemple) + ultra light uniqlo down jacket (the long one) used as a liner underneath all my tailored wool coats + the warmest scarf, hat and mittens i can find. my outfits don’t vary too much either. i mostly wear skinny jeans with tights underneath, a nice blouse, and a big sweater. big puffy down coats and faux fur make me feel as if i look like a house.

  • omg she looks so so amazing!! i layer uppp !!!

    http://www.dragonnfruit.com

  • i even went out for a run yesterday! it was REFRESHINGGGG!! lol no special gears just multiple layers =)

  • i’ve been rotating the same two thick wooly sweaters for the past few months whenever the temperature dips below 60. luckily for me, l.a. doesn’t require much more than that!

  • Great photo – and so helpful because I moved from sunny California to freezing Paris and I don’t know how to dress and stay warm – hats, socks, gloves, layer upon layer, really, all that?!? Oomph! But this is so cute and she looks warm!

Bref bravo

  • Ohhhhh It looks so warm and comfy!! I am between Paris and London, and it’s freezing here as well!

Of course I spend most of my time with a dark blue military parka. But my sister offered me for christmas the most amazing little fur jacket. It is cream colour and so warm.

I immediately feel like a princess wearing it!

  • My, even in Athens it’s cold these days.

I go for boots, leather gloves, wool scarf, wool hat and thick thghts.

In order to stay chic I colour coordinate the above, hoping it works.

    A big kiss from Greece!

  • I love winter fashion, but sometimes I am glad I live on the island of Australia

  • -5 c’est froid?!

    Une montréalaise.

  • Looks like I need to make a trip to Uniqlo. Thanks for the advice!

  • Here in London I live in my thermal socks, cord trousers, rabbit fur gloves and a faux fur hat with my tweed coat (it really keeps the cold and the wind out! it’s been an amazing discovery).

  • I love this look! I just returned from glorious NYC last week and it was indeed tricky to stay stylish and warm at the same time.

Thanks for the continuous inspiration, Garance! Your blog is amazing.

    XOXO

  • very good question that i think we all find ourselves asking. i wear a beanie and a warm winter jacket!
    xx, http://wordbyjessie.com/

  • Wow she manages to stay so stylish but still dress warm. Sometimes this seems very difficult but this is a nice example that can be done!

  • so practical and cute. x

  • I love how she can totally stay stylish even when its freezing! when its cold outside i normally tend to go to mexicaliblues.com for there super comfy and warm sweaters:) i ts nice to look casual and cute!

    http://www.montrealinstyle.com

  • Garance,

I love this blog and love the look.

Can you tell us about the bag?

  • Here are the layers:
Black silk or lacy wool longjohns. Merino wool hiking socks. Underwear « shorts » down to mid-thigh. Black Polarfleece leggings with slippery outer layer from REI. Dark-denim flannel-lined jeans. Padded bra. Cashmere tank top. Black fleece or merino turtleneck. Fake-fur-lined snow boots in black. Wide « turtleneck hood », knit like a sweater, to cover the face/cheeks. Black wool gloves (cheap enough for extras) – or pricey neoprene. And a REALLY nicely tailored designer down coat, hooded, high-collar, with a fake-fur lining – imitate the animals, don’t covet them.

[Also, walk everywhere in the blizzard, cussing the inept local transportation system under your breath… you won’t look cool that way, but you’ll get plenty hot under the collar by the time you finally reach your destination.]

  • An XIX century style, reinterpreted nowadays

  • Excellent look! Pourrais-je savoir d’où proviennent ces bottes?! Ou alors en trouver des similaires?
