high-waisted

10 years ago by

  • it goes so well w/ the plants in the background :)

  • I totally agree, I love the Victoria’s secret cheekys with the scrunch butt, because they actually make my bum look smaller and perkier unlike the high waist ones.

  • Without a doubt, the most flattering is actually the string bikini! Because it exudes confidence (flattering) and you can adjust the strings around, so it’s not digging in. Get it in a bright red or pink. Simple and beautiful!

  • Yes! I love string bikinis, too! They don’t seem like they would be so friendly, but actually they are incredibly flexible and adjustable. Throw in changing the size of the triangles and coverage, and you get quite a lot of variety in terms of the silhouette.

I love the leafy print here. Reminds me of a Victoria’s Secret print I am loving lately, that looks a bit like bamboo leaves (it would be so fitting for the setting of this photo!):

I agree with Rachelle about how flattering that ruched bikini bottom can be, too!

  • princessglee 25 juillet 2013, 8:29

Yes, the string bikini is the most flattering. I recently figured that out after putting on a little weight and attempting to find a more covered up bikini. Tried a zillion different versions of more covered up and went back to the original string. It honestly looked best.

  • I think you brought up an interesting point about more material being unflattering, however it really depends on the bathing suit. There are plenty of beautiful bathing suits out there that are gorgeous that aren’t teeny tiny.
I have a combination of both, but I prefer to where the ones that are a little more covered up because they really are more comfy.

  • You’r totally right, I still in doubt of buying a hight waisted bottom myself, or not. Like most curved ladies I don’t want my behind to look big and unflattering. xo Hanneke

  • Bonjour Garance,

  • I went on my honeymoon last January and decided that I had to buy thong bathing suits because of exactly what you say, Garance. These weren’t G-string types of bathing suit bottoms, incidentally. There was some fabric. Anyhow, my 30 year old bum is great. In part. The part that is fab and enviable is the top part. The panzer* is all dimply, etc. I’d look great in Bumsters but feel unattractive in the aforementioned VS cheeky bottoms. And of course, all bathing suits besides thongs cut across this dimply expanse and seem to highlight the imperfections. So, I bought my thong bikinis from a Miami shop, knowing that this area of the world celebrates the ultra-feminine body. My pair of round butt cheeks were prettily on display and I loved it. I didn’t expect anyone to stare at or study my bum, but I was confident knowing that if someone happened to glance at my derriere, they’d see it at its prettiest.

This realization occurred simply by comparing my physique in thong underwear with my physique in regular underwear. Thongs are just more flattering.

    C’est tout.

*This is a British term for (quoting Urban Dictionary):
« the crescent shaped area of skin on bottom of the female breast or buttocks that exposed by really short shirts or skirts. Formerly, this most beautiful part of all the female anatomy was without a word to describe it. »

  • Love this suit, the print is so retro.

  • Extremely beautiful fashion show video clip…..mostly the best swimsuits presented are flattering for girls with smaller busts.

  • True, for young people. At my age, (I’m a mum in my forties) there are some parts better covered. My belly is not what it used to be, even when flat, better leave it covered in public. No crop top for me for instance, it would look a bit ridiculous anyway, so things might have a logic to them.

    http://www.laurablogmode.com

  • I totally agree. I used to work retail at a swimsuit shop years ago and always made every woman try on all types of fits. Most were surprised at what they felt most comfortable in. I’m all about a tie side bottom to thin out curvy hips. This print is so cute too.

  • I totally agree. There is something counter intuitive about it but true! From a fashion perspective this bathing suit is very chic, but not for me.

  • J’adore ! J’en ai fait tout un article ! Contente de voir que tu aimes aussi…

  • My favorite bottom is a bit high on the waist but not as much as in the pic and always cheeky. well here in Latin America big butts are something women actually love so if you are flat on the back the cheeky bottom makes an illusion of volume, is not my case but i show it anyways. I’m not a fan of thong bikinis though except if you’re Brazilian they can make anything work.

  • It’s true in some cases, but not when it comes to swimwear. I find it very difficult to find a 2-piece that covers my bum, even though I have a small bum. I love my body, I just don’t want everyone to see half of my behind when I’m at the beach.

    http://angeliquejennifer.blogspot.com

  • As a woman with a large behind I must say I disagree. My behind looks much better covered than hanging out all over. I promise. And I have seen women with very, very large bottoms wearing tiny string bikinis with very little back coverage and it does not look nice. Now, I don’t mean women with large behinds should wear a skirt down to their knees to the beach; a bathing suit like the one you show in the picture would be very attractive on a full figured woman.

  • Bonjour Garance!
why do you « almost only » post pictures of very thin and very young girls?
I DO love your blog, and will always read it
I just feel so old (41) and fat (never in my life will I write my weight!) when I look at your pictures…

love, and have a lovely day
    Paola

  • i agree that string bikinis are the most flattering (for me at least), but there’s also a trade-off in that they move around a lot more than say, a flattering one-piece. not being a fan of flashing, i often find that i’m a lot more relaxed and comfortable, and therefore more confident (and better-looking), when i’m covered up a bit more.

  • So interesting and such a « flashpoint » for women. Okay I put all the french comments in a translator and was surprised to find that they weren’t into just letting it all hang-out either.

I think that bikini’s should be put away sometime after age 40 depending on whether you’ve had children or not. There are a few women who have amazing bodies — but I must agree that the women you are trying to encourage — are either young or have miraculously few faults.

Show me a woman with post-childbearing wrinkles at the waist? She is greatly improved with a one-piece suit. Over 50? get out the sarong minimally no matter how thin you are…

A few honest photos of 35-40 year-old bikini wearers would be interesting to see.

  • In respectful disagreement, I offer this picture of Dame Helen Mirren at 65, smoking hot in a bikini:
    http://www.lostartofbeingadame.com/2013/04/01/the-bikini-shot-heard-round-the-world-helen-mirren-pust-the-dame-in-dame/

I myself, am over 40, and am far more flattered by a side-tie bikini. Not teensy tiny, but sane coverage. A one-piece makes me look awfully dumpy, and is not nearly as flattering. That said, I do work out most days, but more than anything I think it’s genes and personal comfort level and good sense, over any sweeping generalizations that « so and so is forbidden after 40 ».

  • Great photo! Note! No Strings :)

  • I loved it!

  • PERFECT! PERFECT! PERFECT!

I needed a little inspiration to try new things. My boyfriend will be back at home in less than 6 days (after being deployed for 9 months!!) and I definitely want to put something flattering on (even though it probably wouldn’t matter what we both look like – we are still kind of excited) :)

    thx!

  • Hello Hello,

    I love it !

    À bientôt, Laëti

  • Totally love it. Can’t find it on their website though. Can anybody help please? Thanks

  • I am with the 40 year old maman – it’s not the back side that’s the problem here – it’s the post-children stomach. Even on best thin days the skin is never smooth and taut. It’s the reverse (but I can’t bear to write those actual words in describing my own, previously rather good, tummy.) I can’t see how it is ever going to look good uncovered even in a string bikini so it’s high waists or full suits for me I think. The one in the picture would do nicely – although I do find halter necks give me a headache, is that weird? And no matter how many I try, Eres just don’t fit me – too short in the body, too flattening on the boobs although I love the colours – what a shame as I’d really like one! x

  • It is gorgeous indeed! Also love the slightly decent bottom with the strappy top! xx

    http://www.creativityandchocolate.com

  • Garance, when you are making a comment that more skin and less fabric is better, you obviously do not have cellulite or wobly fatty areas.

I would say that most people look better when they’re completely naked, but as soon as any fabric is involved, the lack of it draws attention to those areas that would better be covered, because that is what you would look at first.

  • Ahhh Swimsuits. This one looks wonderful on her–great photo all around. I agree that string bikini’s (I prefer side tie ones myself) look much better on most because they can be adjusted. I just don’t like the potential for slightly-too-tight-unadjustable elastic to accentuate a « problem » area… And for those that said over 40 shouldn’t wear bikini’s, I must say that age is just a number, and here in Santa Barbara, there are many over 40’s who have rockin’ bodies. If you got it…. Anyway, I think people should stick to what makes them comfortable, because beauty comes with confidence, and if you’re enjoying your skin and whatever you choose to put on it, that beauty will shine through.

  • It’s really beautiful, it depends on how your bum and hips are build, and this kind of bikini slip looks much better as when it is to small, besides, it’s more comfortable when it doesn’t move all the time…
    The top is perfect.

  • I love this bathing suit/bikini. Is it still available? Well chosen as example, dear Garance!

  • Such a playful shooting!

  • I say – take a big deep breath and try lots on! Bikini separates are great – all designers should do them – depending on the style I can have a two size difference between the top and bottom. If it fits right, it looks good! In addition to the suit looking good I also want to be able to play with my kids, surf, run on the sand without any wardrobe malfunctions. Nothing less flattering than constantly pulling your bathers out of your – ahem.. A little more coverage is better – I think.

  • All i have to say is: LULI FAMA bikinis
    or
    Acacia swimwear
    or
    Posh Pua bottom

All cheeky, scrunchy, flattering, light and brasilian inspired !

I have bum, round, high, i’m lucky and i’m working for it.
I’m a normal 38 french size, and i realise lately (im 30 now) that the most flattering is the less coverage (not stringstring but still no SO much )
Strangely, when i can be full of complex, it gives me confidence……a LOT

    voilà :)

  • I love this suit! It is gorge and I like that there is a bit more. I personally do not think super skimpy suits are that attractive. The human body does not always look all THAT attractive…I mean we have all seen that episode of Seinfeld and Jerry’s perpetually naked girl friend.

  • The high waist is SO the it swimsuit of the Summer. I love the palm print on this one- perfect for an exotic vacation!

    xx Erin

  • Salut Garance,
