Je sais. Aaaaaaargh non mais quelle horreur, des BIRKENSTOCK !!!
Je vous aurais montré ça il y a trois ans, vous m’auriez traitée de traitresse.
Et vous auriez eu bien raison. À l’époque, je détestais les Birkenstock.
Mais ce matin, je vous en montre une paire. (Même si j’ai eu un peu le vertige en cliquant sur “poster”
Laissez-moi vous expliquer le cheminement de ma Birkpensée.
Juillet 1991, Ajaccio.
Ma copine C* rentre de New York. Ma copine C, la coolitude incarnée.
J’en reviens même pas qu’on soit copines tellement elle est 1000 fois plus cool que moi. Genre, le premier jour où elle est venue me parler, j’ai failli m’évanouir.
Non seulement elle est belle – mannequin à ses heures perdues, le premier mannequin que j’ai jamais rencontré – mais en plus, elle a un style de malade. Elle a habité à Paris, ce qui déjà la place au firmament de la coolitude ajaccienne, et cet été-là, elle revient de New York, donc, laissez tomber comme je meurs.
Ça fait longtemps que je ne l’ai pas vue. Elle me rejoint pour passer quelques jours de vacances avec moi. J’ai trop hâte de voir ce qu’elle a ramené de New York.
Elle tape à la porte, l’ouvre, et là, dans l’encadrement de la porte, la lumière éclabousse mon salon, sa silhouette se dessine, et soudain, JE SUIS TERRASSÉE PAR LE STYLE.
Je me rappellerai de cette tenue à vie.
D’abord, elle avait coupé ses cheveux, ce qui plaçait sa sublimitude sur la planète Jean Seberg, direct. Ensuite, elle portait un petit sweat vintage bien étriqué, bleu, un jean délavé bien serré, un peu taille haute, et, oui vous l’avez deviné une, une paire de Birkenstock** avec des chaussettes.
Toujours à moitié en train de m’étouffer, je lui montre ses chaussures et elle me dit avec une nonchalance qui me terrasse à nouveau :
“Oh, ça ? Tout le monde en porte à New York, enfin, surtout les mannequins, tu te rends pas compte, c’est vraiment top pour courir entre les castings !”
Mon compte est bon. New York ? Mannequins ? Castings ?
Je suis à terre écrabouillée par la coolitude. Je veux.
Août 91, dans ma chambre d’ado, entourée de tous mes The Face que je lèche tellement je les aime. Je colle une photo sur mon mur d’inspiration***
Mais je n’ose pas du tout sauter le pas d’en acheter. Je suis pas une touriste, moi, oh**! (mais qu’est-ce que je suis conne, par contre)
1997 ou quelque chose comme ça, j’achète ma première paire de Birks.
Je pourrais vous décrire un grand moment de shopping, mais non, je ne m’en souviens plus vraiment. J’ai trop attendu, c’est devenu carrément mainstream, tout le monde en a.
2006 (Je sais, j’ai 342 ans ou quoi ?) (Réponse = Oui.) Je jette mes Birks.
TOUT LE MONDE EN PORTE.
En France au moins. Dès que l’été arrive, vas-y que tout le monde collectionne les Birks, les couleurs se font de plus en plus fantaisistes, on les achète en vernis, à paillettes, dans des formes de plus en plus bizarre. Un jour, je me retrouve à en porter des oranges vernies et là je me dis : cette plaisanterie a assez duré, Garance, reprends-toi.
Tout le côté rough, légèrement ironique (je suis sublime et mes chaussures de prêtre sont tellement moches que ma beauté te saute trois fois plus aux yeux) qui me plaisait a disparu.
2012, Trois événements isolés attirent mon attention.
1 – Christopher Kane met des chaussures de piscine dans son show, et tout le monde crie au génie. Ça me rappelle quelque chose.
2 – C’est le retour des 90’s. C’est la mode des sweaters étriqués. C’est la mode des jeans serrés. Une pensée se forme dans ma tête : j’ai envie de Birkenstock. Je dis ça à Scott en pensant qu’il va exercer son droit de véto, mais il me dit : “Moi aussi, c’est bizarre : j’ai envie de Birkenstock.”
J’appose mon droit de véto. Pour lui ? Ah non !
3 – Tiens, c’est bizarre, dans la rue, plus personne ne porte de Birkenstock.
4 – Phoebe Philo, qui est à la mode ce que Tom Cruise est à la Scientologie, met d’étranges chaussures à fourrure dans son show. Ce n’est plus un signe, c’est une déclaration.
Et voilà le cheminement de ma pensée : AU SECOURS, LA BIRK EST DE RETOUR ET J’EN VEUX UNE PAIRE !!!

Voilà, les enfants, c’est mon histoire. Depuis, j’ai essayé de les porter dans la rue, et il est vrai que les gens me dévisagent les pieds, grave.
Je pense quand même que je vais persévérer, juste pour pouvoir vous dire: “Je vous l’avais dit”.
Si vous me voyez passer dans la rue avec, ne vous inquiétez pas, quoi. Je ne suis pas une touriste**. Même que, avant, dans le passé, j’avais du style. Avant que je ne commence à suivre la mode. Il m’est arrivé de porter des talons.
Dites, vous m’aimerez toujours ? Même en Birks ?

***Et quand je dis coller, c’est vraiment coller, demandez à ma mère. Je colle avec de la colle sur les murs. Je l’entends encore hurler dans mes oreilles. Oh, ça va maman, j’avais perdu ma Patafix.

D’ailleurs je me souviens d’une paire beige claire en daim, classique, dont je suis tombee amoureuse a l’age de 11 ans a Stockholm et que je voulais porter avec mon calecon noir longueur genou. Mais des Birkenstock avec des chaussettes..NON!! (et je suis pourtant tres ouverte d’esprit).

ok, I hate Birkenstocks, the traditional double strap ones. Regardless of comfort, they are ugly. BUT I broke down and bought a pair of the Giza thong style sandal, in a simple black leather, and LOVE them! I have high arches, 4 kids and in the summer I wear them everywhere. Please do not let me see you in them in the winter. I will assume you are on crack. <3
I know ! The thing is, it massages your foot, it’s a weird sensation.

Rien à faire, ce type de birk + chaussette = très moche.
Par contre il y a des birks en forme de tong, beaucoup plus jolie, et avec un short en jeans en pleine montagne ça passe plutôt bien. Mais la, je trouve ça vraiment, pas top. Sinon, ça ne m’empêche pas d’adorer ton blog, et de trouver tes articles méga-top (oui celui-ci aussi).

But you know what- they are great!
I had a red Gizeh pair and they have lasted me for years and help all the damage ballerina flats have done to my arches! Yes you need to think twice about how your going to wear them ( I wear mine with cream/white slim cut trousers and a bright top) but once you have found a look that doesn’t evoke the tourist look, your feet will thank you and you will never want to throw them away!

Je n’en ai jamais porté (et pourtant je suis encore plus vieillle que toi, en 91 j’avais déjà 24 ans ! :)) et n’en porterai jamais, je n’assume pas le côté « savate » mais je ne déteste pas les gens qui en portent, rassure toi ! je trouve ça même attendrissant, c’est un peu enfantin. En revanche, je trouve immondes les sandales avec fourrure rouge !

Dans la mode, comme ça arrive avec l’Art, si on est très ouvert et surtout trop dans ce monde-là, comme c’est ton cas, Garance, je crois que cela nous fait parfois perdre la perspective. Je trouve que pas TOUT est possible. Et les chaussettes avec des sandales est une des choses qui ne peut pas aller. Ça ne marche pas!
Je trouve que les sandales de Céline sont un péché! :) Je n’arrive pas à croire que Phoebe Philo ait fait ça! Est-ce que tu peux expliquer pourquoi ella a fait ça?

I do have Birkenstocks in summer , but somehow some people make it look way cooler, don’t know how…..Remember, when Phillip Lim did them a few seasons ago? They looked really cool. Besides I think cool looking people (not that I would know) go also for comfort, and maybe that is what shines through, yes I am comfortable and cool and no I don’t care if you disapprove, you know? You probably can do it, because you have this air of coolness about you :)

Garance! be carefull in Buenos Aires, Argentina Birkenstocks are super mainstream already, crazy colors and shapes, present in every shop possible. I dont know how that happened here first, but I haven’t even worn them and I’m already tired. I believe there’s a pretty good chance you will regret this! Sorry to be so insistent but I’m really tired of them. But if anyone can pull them off, sure its you!

En juillet j’ai acheté une paire de Birkenstock, vertes, super soldées, sans y croire.
Je ne les ai pas quittées de tout l’été : je trouve qu’elles magnifient le pied, la cheville et la jambe.
Sans parler du confort. Seul bémol: la semelle intérieure claire qui se salit assez vite (ce qui nuit au style).

I had a pair in the 90’s too!! They were red and super comfy and I would wear them with shorts and white/navy tshirts… And even Heidi Klum made a special collection, do you remember that? They were trendy… and after a while I got tired and hated them. But now… who knows? Maybe I will like them again. Who am I kidding? I can be brainwashed in a minute, I just need a good add, nice colours, a catchy slogan ang a cool blogger wearing them once… I have no personality, sigh!
My friend used to rock these all the time with skinny jeans, but she’s so tall and thin so I think she could pull off just about anything. For me, however, Birkenstocks do nothing but make me look short and stumpy, haha.

I really dont care much about Birkenstocks. Always thought they didn’t look good on me – I’ve super-skinny feet and all Birkenstocks look enormous and out of proportion on my feet. Besides, I don’t find them that comfortable. Last time I wore a pair (back in 2002 probably) the bottom of my feet were left full of blisters (yeah, I’ve got very particular feet)…

Moi c’est clair je hais ces chaussures. Je les trouve pas féminine du tout, et puis quand je vais à Marseille je les vois aux pieds de toutes ces filles bizarres qui ont un style que je hais tout autant ! Donc pour moi ça sera sous réserve les Birkenstocks :)
Alors par contre j’adore l’histoire de ton amie mannequin, j’aime les gens comme ça que se foute complètement de ce que les gens pensent et font ce qui leur plaise un point c’est tout !
I love Birkenstocks not all of them but quite a few. Last summer in NYC I saw so many girls wearing them and their style was impeccable. Now back in London I will be heading into town to the shop to purchase a pair and I don’t care who says Birkenstocks are not stylish. What is it they say ‘own your style’ or maybe I made that up, but it’s what I believe. Garance make your own!

Oh the Birkenstocks – I have a real love/hate relationsship with that shoe.
I bought my first pair a few years back, when I was in Berlin on vacation, and they are so perfect to walk around in all day, without getting swollen and sore feet – but now when I look at them I can’t really see how I am ever going to wear them again.
I think, though that I will save them, after ready your post – who knows maybe one day I find my self putting them back on, as one of the most natural things I ever done.
See, not sure how men work, but my hubby loves it when I am in a comfortable shoe, or a big knitted sweater that looks cozy. How does that work? It’s like they see you in a new light suddenly,hahaha :)

Non non et non. C’est pas que c’est hideux (quoique, quand même)… ce que je trouve dingue surtout, c’est que la Birk,… c’est reservé au commun des mortels… quand, comme toi Garance, on a un pass pour les marques de l’Olympe, on a un tel choix de pompes sublimes sous le nez, à portée de main, qu’on ne PEUT PAS s’arrêter sur des Birkenstock. On peut pas. (et avec les chaussettes je crois que je meurs maintenant.)
Ohh là là, ces birk à fourrures là, et pourquoi pas des sabots avec du foin dedans tant qu’on y est? ça y ressemble furieusement… je te rassure, je suis beauuuuuucoup plus vieille que toi, mais jamais porté de ces trucs que mon esprit relie étroitement, va savoir pour quoi, à la quintessence de l’allemande non épilée…bien française, oui, je suis. Si je porte un jour ces trucs, ce sera en guise de sandales d’intérieur l’été…et parce que j’habite la campagne…Allez, tout le monde a droit à ses moments de faiblesse, va ;)

I know I am with you…I wouldn’t wear docksiders in the 80’s and I never bought birks in the 90’s but I have converted. If you do it right there is something super boho « chique » about the birks…with socks? Not sure…but I love the photo and in my size 11 not so cute.

En même temps, n’importe quoi que tu prends en photo devient sublime… Et n’importe quoi porté par une belle nana, idem. Je détestais, jusqu’à ce que je voie une amie, sublime mais pas mannequin (elle aurait pu à l’époque où elles étaient minces, pas maigres, bref), porter le modèle « tong’ en vernis noir avec un vernis violet sombre sur les pieds… C’était beau et sexy!
Signé:la fille qui ne jure que par UGG et croc’s (ne hurle pas, ils font même des ballerines, maintenant!). De toute façon, l’essentiel, c’est que dedans, nos pieds restent jolis, les adeptes de stilettos, je veux pas voir leurs pieds :/ (je les adore, hein, les talons, mais ça doit rester occasionnel pour moi)

how much I love them!!! Ok, they’re not so chic, but the secret is: to choose the right model…
Les Birkenstock c’est comme les UGG, les Hunter caoutchouc ou les sneakers IM on aime ou on déteste, perso elles m’inspirent de la tentresse et de la cool attitude, leur confort est indéniable, c’est vrai qu’elles donnent plus un côté pieds de Shrek, que je serai la plus belle pour aller danser, mais tant pis j’ai chopé le virus et conclusion j’en ai 5 paires que j’aime d’amour et accessoirisées avec la chaussette why not?
NO WAY !!! et pourquoi pas des Crocs tant qu’on y est….
Ok c’est peut etre confortable ( quoique les chaussures qui ne ferment pas à l’arrière sont elles vraiment confortables quand on court ?), mais c’est vraiment trop laid je trouve. Et le fait de voir des sandales de piscine ou des trucs à poil à côté ne me fera pas changer d’avis, même si c’est Phoebe Philo. En tout cas c’est vrai que notre goût fashion évolue avec le temps et le fait de voir et revoir les choses dans les magazines et dans les magasins nous amène parfois à reconsidérer la question (pour moi ca a été les derbies, que je trouvais méga moches et puis j’y suis venue)

le problème, avec la birkenstock, c’est que quand on commence à en mettre, on a du mal à marcher avec autre chose. J’adore mes birk (sans chaussettes, et avec les ongles faits). Mon mec déteste, of course !

des mois, des années, des décennies (non ok, pas des décennies) que je te lis, que je m’enthousiasme, que je rigole ou reste sceptique, sans jamais avoir osé faire le pas et te laisser un commentaire. Mais là, l’envie est trop forte. Des Birkenstocks! Je pourrais en parler pendant des heures.
Jeune ado, j’avais les pieds plats paraît-il, et mon médecin m’avait envoyé dans un magasin orthopédique… Honteux et encore un peu boutonneux, alors que j’essayais le modèle noir à deux bandes, une dame à côté de moi me regarde un peu navrée et me dit « C’est pas la beauté qui compte, c’est la santé » (avec un accent suisse-allemand, je ne sais pas si tu vois ce que ça donne). Une phrase qui me hante encore. Allergique aux Birk’s pendant fort fort longtemps du coup.
Oui mais voilà. J’ai re-craqué il y a quelques mois, et je n’ai jamais regretté mon achat. Et au Japon – j’y étais cet été – ils A-DORENT. Je n’ai pas encore fait le pas chaussette-dans-la-birkenstock, mais j’y songerais presque. Porté avec humour, en décalage avec une pochette cloutée p.ex. (un garçon qui porte des Birks et tient une pochette cloutée ne peut foncièrement pas être un mauvais bougre, non?), j’adore. Bref, je dis OUI au retour de la Birk!
Me semble que je me suis étalé, je m’en excuse. Je ferai plus court la prochaine fois, promis :-)

You really are wonderful. I love reading your posts. I also remember coveting and owning Birkenstocks too, but not until I lived in Italy for a summer. They were perfect for summer. So simple, so stylish and easy. Once in a while I’ll see a very chic, stylish girl pulling them off in the college town where I live and considering buying another pair. Thanks for the post!
Ha! I bought my a pair 3 years ago in Europe, silver ones that I thought were a far cry from the average brown (uh, not that far). My husband despises them but I say, « AT LEAST THEY’RE NOT CROCS! »

Je suis d’accord avec toi et j’adoore cette photo. Tout est dans le choix de la chaussette (celles en laine de Polder… ahh) et dans la façon de porter l’ensemble. Pour moi c’est idem avec les sabots et les birk en flanelle grise… Tout est une question de cohérence de l’ensemble ;)

N’empêche, cette photo est canon! puis je sentais effectivement la birk revenir tout doucement, et puis en mode cool… bin c’est cool! Je trouve que tu as été assez genial sur ce coup là, tu as un sens tellement aigu de la mode, et je le redis, tu es vraiment une source d’inspiration, ton blog est mon habitude, tu e vieillis pas ou tellement bien. Ben les Birks c’est pareil, eh oui.
On en jettera toujours une paire après avoir vu et revu des foules moches et sans style les porter, accentuant le mollet trop fort, la jambe lourde etc….
Et il y aura toujours une mannequine « entre 2 castings » toute grande et maigre et belle et stylée qui nous les fera racheter dans un élan de grungitude branchée décontractée.
Parce que finalement, on a beau etre une fanatique du stiletto, une hysterique de YSL, une inconditionnelle de Louboutin…. etre bien (et vraiment bien, pas genre « même pas mal en talons de 12 ») c’est une quete ultime.
Alors moi je les porte en chaussons chez moi, en feutre gris, et j’assume le coté look infirmière!

il ne faut pas oublier son confort! j’ai des soucis de chevilles et de pieds , les birkens me sauvent qand je fais la fourmi à la maison ou la cusine pendant 2 heures : je dirais presque que c’est la condition sine qua non sinon j’ai un p**** de mal aux jambes. alors c’est peut être pas tres glamour mais ça sauve la vie parfois…et puis certains modeles sont pas trop mal finalement (gris feutrine , style monacale)
par contre je sors pas forcement avec….
I remember my mother wearing them in the late 80th and I thought « how cool of her, not to care about what anyone thinks ». Last summer it was time for me… I told myself: you can pull them off. TOTES! Turnes out: I can’t. I like them, they are comfy and patent leather but while wearing them I either feel like a feminist or a wannabe hipster. Maybe if I wouldn’t life in Germany but Italy or France or NY… so it’s neither my fault nor theirs. Right now we just don’t work out.

Je comprends les avis réprobateurs mais quand je porte mes birkenstock je trouve mes pieds carrément sexy ! Avec un skinny qui dévoile largement les chevilles, top !

En Espagne ont les a jamais portés et il n’y a que les touristes (surtout les allemands et les anglais) qui les portent avec des chaussettes mais bon, ce n’est pas ça qui nous permet de les différencier , un allemand ou un anglais, on le voit de loin en Espagne, on est d’accord. Mais depuis 2 ans je passe quelques jours à Aix-en-Provence pendant l’été et c’est fou le nombre de personnes qui les portent! (j’y vais aussi en hiver mais bon, en hiver personne les portent, évidemment!). J’en parlais avec mon copain, qui habite là-bas tout l’année, car on se promenait dans le marché et il y avait un marchand qui les vendait mais dans toutes les couleurs et comme tu dis, avec des paillettes, en doré, en argenté… Bon bref, c’est quelque chose qui m’a beaucoup choqué, ici en Espagne on en voit presque pas…

Garance, j’habite en Allemagne. Tu visualises un peu le truc? PAYS DE LA BIRKENSTOCK-CHAUSSETTES! Du coup j’ai quand même du mal à adhérer. Mais si jamais je saute le pas, je passerai absolument pas pour une fille cool ici, juste pour quelqu’un de normal haha. Bon j’exagère un peu, puisqu’en général le combo sandales-chaussettes s’observe chez les hommes ou les mamies (catégories auxquelles je n’appartiens pas). Mais franchement, pour moi les chaussettes passent mieux avec des sandales à talon (boooon pas n’importe quelles sandales à talons non plus hein!), mais comme j’étais sceptique au début face à cette tendance, peut être que je changerai d’avis pour les Birkenstocks ;) A vrai dire, je les imagine effectivement bien portées de manière ultra coolissime, mais je suis pas convaincue du résultat sur moi…

Je les ai decouvertes lors de mon premier voyage en Californie en 1978 (!) ou presque tout le monde en portait surtout le soir, apres une journee surf/beach. J’en ai essaye, esperant pouvoir revenir a Paris avec ce « je ne sais quoi » de californien mais me suis degonflee a la derniere minute.
D’autre part, chere Garance, je suis sure que vous, vous saurez les portez, car vous avez un style sans fautes.

j’adore ces posts! quand tu parles de tes souvenirs, des évolutions que tu as pu noter quand à 543ans tu te retournes et que tu essayes de décortiquer les styles par lesquels tu as pu passer.. c’est tt simplement über jouissif ( oui moi aussi je m’emballe mais c’est obligé après un post comme ça!) de te lire quand tu nous raconte tout ça!.. peut-être aussi que ça nous rappelle tous les styles par lesquels on est passé, toutes les copines hyper cools qu’on a pu avoir, toutes les choses qu’on a pu adorer porter à une époque et qui sont aujourd’hui totalement dépassées.. à la fois totalement emballée et « exclamative » après avoir lu un super post méga bien écrit (je crois que sur les 5 derniers mots, tu peux facilement comprendre ce que veux dire exclamative!) et également nostalgique du temps qui passe symbolisé par tous ces styles qu’on a pu porter et qui appartiennent à une autre époque…

La birk ca peut encore passer… Si tu dois marcher toute la journée, qu’il fait très très chaud et que tu ne risques de croiser PERSONNE que tu ne connaisses en rue.
Mais alors avec la chaussette en laine, là ca me dépasse complètement.
C’est pire que les Uggs ca quand même!
UH…I don’t know, I’m still not sold… when I get crazier and crazier about heels everyone around me turns on to flats especially this season, I guess no one likes hurty feet, and life is getting easier with technology but more&more stressful. In high school when in my psychology class, the professor told us that people tend to « imagine to like stuff » for example if I saw a certain pair of very expensive heels but can’t afford them and next to them if « we » see more cheap shoes and go like « uh… these are so prettier, actually prettier than these expensive ones, and cheaper too…I’ll buy them! » we actually convinced ourselves that these are « prettier and better » just because we can afford them, so maybe bc who can run 24/7 in heels except if you’re Victoria Beckham (I always think of her when my feet hurt in heels-it’s mental yoga for my feet) so they tend to hurt and you have a long busy day so maybe you’re (not just you everyone who likes Birkenstocks -no offense to anyone) like « yes they are not bad, I can make this work »… just bc its hard in heels, its like a second job to balance it out and have a nice walk too…
je déteste mais la photo de 1991 pourrait me faire changer d’avis… trop canon son look… Comme quoi c’est encore une histoire d’assortiment et de belles jambes qui permettent tout!

Here in Argentina Birkenstocks are super trendy. Unfortunately, so is the Birckenstock platforms: it’s the same sandal with platform. They look like bride of Frankenstein’s shoes and even though many girls wear them, they all look really uncomfortable wearing them.
But yes, I would still love you even in Birks =)

I love that you wrote about these shoes! Because I kind of noticed the same thing this spring when the young and hip were wearing light blue denim jackets. Not very often but then this summer in Berlin these jackets were there like uniforms! And I suddenly realised that I hadnt seen these jackets on the streets for a while- even those people who say they are far from fashion did not wear them! Then i think it was official again- the denim jackets are back! But what is interesting is that the gap between the last person getting tired of a beloved item and rediscovering it as a cult?- is not that wide.
je peux t’assurer un truc: les filles les mieux sapées et les plus cools de la terre sont (aussi) en Hollande, et je peux te jurer que là bas, elles sont TOUTES, tout l’été, en Birken. Bon, pas n’importe lesquelles, hein, les tongs GIZEH et avec vernis irréprochables. Mais en birken.

J’ai bien ri en lisant ce post ! Ayant vécu longtemps près de la frontière allemande, j’avoue que Birk + chaussette dans mon esprit, c’est les allemands en vacances… En plus, ma mère adore porter leur sabot, autant te dire que j’ai développé une phobie des Birk. Pourtant, j’en ai acheté comme tout le monde quand c’est revenu à la mode, sauf que…je les porte chez moi en pantoufle…avec mes chaussettes (bah oui, mais il fait froid l’hiver, je ne vais quand même pas les porter pieds nus même si tout le monde chez moi se moque). En tout cas, il y a une chose que personne ne pourra leur enlever, c’est le confort maximal de ces chaussures. Après une journée à crapahuter partout, le meilleur moment est quand j’enlève mes chaussures pour glisser mes pieds dans mes Birk. Comme quoi, et pour citer Karl, « c’est moche mais ça sauve les pieds ».

J’ai achete ma premiere paire l’annee derniere (des Gyzeh), l’ete, principalement parce qu’apres 2 semaines en tongs j’avais horriblement mal au dos…
Eh bien en portant mes Birk, non seulement mon mal de dos est passe, mais j’ai decouvert un autre avantage extraordinaire de la Birk en ete : la semelle reste fraiche meme par 40C a l’ombre. Je ne sais pas comment ils font. C’est la magie des Birk.
En revanche, si mon mec n’a pas crie au secours quand je les ai achetees (bon, il n’a pas crie au genie non plus), je doute qu’il apprecie le look Birk-chaussettes, aussi open-minded soit-il en mode…
Je me rappelle, mais à l’époque en 2006 j’étais qu’une môme qui vivait d’amour et d’eau fraiche. Je chaussais mes birks acidulées et je partais à l’aventure… Donc moi, j’adore, ça fait fifi brin d’acier, idéal pour injecter un peu de nonchalance enfantine à une tenue un peu trop chic. Les chaussettes en revanche je suis plus mitigée, ça doit être stylé mais je n’oserais quand même pas (tant mieux si toi oui ! Aaaaah New York).

If you live in New York you are active. As soon as I moved here 4 years ago I bought a pair and I love Worishofers too. Part of loving and living in the city is being active and walking and you can’t in uncomfortable shoes…but I still love the feeling of arriving at a destination and changing into your fabulous shoes. I’ve had birkenstocks for 7 years (from my hippie days when I was a little hippie at uni in Vermont) and after having not worn them for about 3 years, I took them out in September when I was moving. I forgot how magical they were! (**i actually have winter AND summer ones, but lets not get ahead of ourselves)

maybe it depends where you live? i live near the ocean in southern california,. in encinitas, a small surfer, beach town south of los angeles. i wear sandals with jeans and cords and long dresses and short dresses and shorts and even with dressy pants! of course for events and dinners i wear heels, but i have birkenstocks, haviana flip flops, moccasins and even dr. scholls! they look amazing and chic with socks and effortless and hippy-chic without socks. bravo for the birkenthoughts! xoxo, annette
Les Birkens c’est uber cool ! J’ai les noires vernies et il ne faut pas du tout sous estimer le potentiel de ces chaussures. Quand je prends l’avion en plein hiver pour un pays chaud je porte chaussettes et Birken (noires donc, rapport au verni) et arrivée à destination, j’enlève les chaussettes ni vu ni connu.
Je suis mariée à un physicien allemand, donc lui trouve ça absolument sexy !!
J’en ai une paire qui date de 1992 dans mes années hippie ici à Montréal, des brunes vraiment basic et pas sexy du tout… mais quel confort!!! Par contre, jamais avec des chaussettes hors de la maison…

Garance, what a great post.. and thank you, Ive been rocking birkenstocks for years, I cant wait for the warm weather, and YES I do skinnys and socks, and get no end of abuse for it. Winkie, my eccentric grandmother lived in a white pair of arizonas and I think she passed on her passion to me (!!). I order a couple of pairs from Germany each year (you just see- a little obsessed!) last year it was Ramses and Cairo…back in the 90’s my boyfriend would wear a chunky red Miu Miu sweater with short jeans and the ugliest most remedial black leather pair he could find and he looked fabulous! Sorry you’ve got my birk memories rolling. In 2000 in Sydney all the boys we wearing white Gizehs, and now my husband wears an old beat up leather pair that I love seeing on his brown feet. They remind me of more carefree times kicking around Asia. But getting away form the hippy connotation I think they’re super cool deep down you do too Garance!!

Me concernant, il ne s’agit pas de Birkenstock.
Il y a presque 20 ans, dans mon ELLE hebdomadaire, une top model portait sur toutes les pages modes une paire de claquettes de piscine Adidas rayées marine/blanc (pas celles qu’on voit maintenant, non, celles dont je te parle sont belles et on ne les trouve plus). Elle les portait avec une robe, un pantalon chic et tout ce qui n’était pas sportswear; ça m’a semblé être le summum de ce qu’il fallait faire. Je voulais ce détachement, cette attitude, ce mix qui esthétiquement me semblait assez génial en outre. Et j’en ai acheté. Dans ma petite ville de province, je ne sais combien de mes ami(e)s m’ont prise pour une folle/plouc/perdue quand je tentais de faire « comme ELLE »!!! J’en ris, mais je sentais bien que mes explications « mode avant-gardiste » restaient vaines! « C’est con elle est belle cette robe, pourquoi tu t’évertues à mettre des tatanes de piscine avec? ».
Voilà, je crois que les Birks + big chaussettes de bucheron me font envie.
Et j’avoue, quand je porte encore parfois ces claquettes (bonne came hein 20 ans après), je me la raconte « avant-gardiste-vintage »… (solitude)
Je me console en me disant que c’est ça le style « commettre des associations ».
(sinon, depuis que je suis la routine de ta dermato « pas d’eau »: tout va très nettement mieux! Merci pour ça)

Birkenstocks…how funny!I remember wanting to buy a pair when I visited my best friend in her hometown in Austria, and she and her husband were making fun of me because they said in Austria « only truck drivers and people who work behind the counter in bars wear them! ». They found it hilarious that their Italian friend was looking for Birkenstocks, but I thought they were totally cool and desperately wanted a pair. However I must confess: I only wore them at home in the end…

I had some Birkenstocks awhile back. But I live in a humid place, and left them under my bed for too long … When I went to get them they were MOLDY! Ewww. I don’t think I can bring myself to wear them again.

The age old Birki v fashion question. I work in fashion and there is a lot of resistance to them BUT let me tell you, you get to a certain age when you just go screw that and you slip into those clunky flip flops and you just go aaaahhhh. My feet are getting a free massage, my knees have stopped aching and I can walk for hours without compromising my back! If you wear them right (no socks please) they can actually look cool and be good for you – win win I say.
PS the only down side is the cork soles suck the moisture out of my skin until my feet look like 2 little alligators….

Et au fil des années, je me suis habituée. Pour finalement, rêver d’en avoir.
Je n’ai pas encore franchi le pas. Mais ça ne saurait tarder surtout depuis que j’ai vu un reportage expliquant que priorité est donnée au confort et à la qualité dans la fabrication de la fameuse chaussure.
I am with you on this! I love my Birken. But for me too, it has been a tough, long, and rumbly journey to get there. I´ve told myself that with pretty toenails they do just fine (have yet to try autumn-version with socks). Yea, I dig them.

Anyone notice the latest picture posted on Jak & Jil? Birks. Definitely think they’re coming back, regardless of how much we all used to hate them.
I knew it when my sister started wearing them. She’s one of those fashionable non-fashion people who are ALWAYS ahead of the trends. I laughed when she bought them earlier this year, but I also knew it wouldn’t be long until we all did!
Si je pense aux Birkenstocks la première réaction est: NOOON! JAMAIS! Mais puis je pense mieux et la vérité est que ça dépend. Par exemple, je sais (JE SAIS) que les UGG, objectivement, ne sont pas des belles chaussures, mais j’en ai une paire et je les porte de temps en temps (ça va bien avec une tenue décontractée jeans serrés + big pullover) tellement elles sont confortables et parfaites pour le froid. Il faut seulement savoir quand on peux les porter: jamais pour boulot etc etc et comment. Et finalement quelque chose très personnel: il faut essayer et voir si ça marche pour nous ou pas.
Donc voilà, je ne sais pas si les Birkenstock marcheraient pour moi ou pas, j’ai jamais essayé. Mais j’ai vu cette photo de Scott (http://www.thesartorialist.com/photos/on-the-street-charmer-milano/), et les chaussures que porte Carolina Castiglioni sont un mix entre Birks + Christopher Kane chaussures de piscine + Céline fur shoes et je pense qu’elles font une partie importante de sa tenue impéccable.
Donc, qui sait. Le truc, comme toujours, c’est d’essayer: si ça te va bien, même si c’est pas hyper branché, allez, osez! Si ça ne va pas du tout même si tous les mannequins en portent: oubliez.
Et puis c’est importnat de se rappeler que, finalement, ce sont que de vêtements: il faut être à l’aise, et dans trois ans peut-être qu’on se demande comment on a pouvé porter cette robe, ces pantalons, telle tenue ou telle autre….mais voilà, c’est pas grave, on se trouvait si bien dans ce moment-là, et c’est cela qui compte!

The only thing is that you can’t get them in my country, Argentina, so you have to replace them with imitations. Here the summer trend is to wear « Birks » with platforms. I prefer the normal ones. Yea, that birkenstocks craze. Every elite (and everyone who wants to be an elite, it’s a status symbol) student in high school wore them. I didn’t wear them because I couldn’t afford them then. Ms. Phoebe Philo really has some talent… she has resurrected the fuglies and made them cool, with fur.

Okay, so I thought that I’d give a bit of feedback on why Birkenstocks were ever (ever) conceived of as glamorous back in the day… in the 90’s, we hit our first wave of 60’s retro fever. Everyone was wearing those idiotic baby tees with the Wal-Mart smiley face on it and over-sized sweaters that had floppy sleeves. Yes, also everyone had Birkenstocks. I think they really captured a moment of 90’s minimalist cool + California chic that really meshed well with the rise of grunge. Now that this prior moment has passed, you gotta wonder what era these come-back Birks are trying to channel, if they’re popping up again now. Why the 60’s? Why the 90’s? Why together, and why now?
Garance, I hear you and feel both your pain and excitement at the same time! I use to laugh, mock and almost gag (just a little) at the thought of wearing Birkenstocks – especially with wool socks….(and I grew-up in Canada – yes, we love our woolies and Birks) But about 18 years ago (eeeekk ….I can’t believe it was that long ago now….) I bought a pair.
They were so comfortable – once broken-in of course and similar to your story, I too had a talk to myself and decided that in the name of fashion, the Birks must go. I could not throw them away though – they just « rested » nicely in a dust bag in my closet. I couldn’t throw them away – they were too cool – they had too many memories ( I had travelled with them all around the world)….
Anyway, last summer I pulled them out of their resting spot and I just have to say, the Birks must stay!
They are cool – to me – and I suppose that is all that really matters!
Birkenstock Gizehs!: absolutely classic!
THIS was a funny post! I love and hate Birkenstocks! I used to wear them at work, the Madrid style works good in a hospital, so I had some problems with wearing them on my free-tima. But when I went to India for 6 months I had a pair of black madrid with me. They suited every other outfit on the long train journeys trough the hot country. They were really great. Back home some years ago I bought a pair of Gizeh in golden, and they were really the coolest of cool. With a black dress or skinny jeans and a white t-shirt, that is almost as cool you can be! :D For next summer I will wear the Arizona in back AND Gizeh in golden ( and I can tell you, the Kate thing is helping here… ) But really seriously, I think it is a sign of über sexiness and confidence in woman if she wears Birkenstocks, as they are really comfortable. If Kate can, we can too! <3

oh! I had exactly the same! when I was 12 my mum was forcing me to wear Birks! (yes yes, there are comfortable and are shaping our food well…) and I always hated them so much!
And this summer when accidentally I walked in B.store I couldn’t help but wonder how cool they are, in all this crazy patterns! And I still wasn’t sure if I should get them or not but obviously I did and I wore them with so many dresses during summer! I love them and…I need to get another pair now

I have the same love – hate thing going on with them, and have a pair that boomerang back and forth from my wardrobe – I guess part of it is that my style is normally so super girly that I’m not quite sure how to wear them…
My first pair came as the result of a tragic but funny day of just being massively unlucky…
First, it was a lovely sunny day, so I decided to wear my brand new ballet pumps to walk half an hour to university in. I am an idiot. Completely forgetting the golden rule of new shoes (BREAK THEM IN PEOPLE!) within about 5mins they were rubbing like hell. One really dodgy presentation later, where all I can think is ow my feet ow my feet ow my feet, I am on my way home to sulk and plaster up my feet.
But, I have a shopping date with a friend the next day who I have not seen forever. So, after trying on all my shoes and discovering they all hurt terribly, I decide to go to town and buy some new shoes. (Brownie points for being dedicated to a day of shopping!) But what the hell can I wear into town? The only things I can stand are my friends flip flops. I am a size 6. She is a size 9. I look and walk like I am wearing flippers. I finally get in and find the only sandles that fit; Birkenstocks! They are white with pink flowers and ladybugs on them, pretty cute!
So fairly pleased with myself, I decide to treat myself to lunch at Starbucks. I get a super yummy mango smoothie and sit at the window seat to people watch. Not bad. I am about to take a sip and notice the ‘shake before drinking’ on the label, so dutifully follow the instructions….and get it EVERYWHERE! On the table, on the floor, on the chair next to me, and somehow onto the window under the table, and all down my light pink dress. Shit. Fortunately, I narrowly miss getting it on the lady wearing the cream cardigan next to me. Phew! The weirdest thing is NOBODY NOTICES! So I casually wander over to the stand with tissues, clean it up as best I can and get the hell out of there.
I run to Topshop, buy a cheap t-shirt dress and leggings, (while trying to hide the massive smoothie stain with the shoebox on my hand) and run to the nearest toilet to change. Where I come out greeted by a line of middle aged ladies staring at me; I glance in the mirror and realise I have my dress tucked into my leggings flashing my arse to them all. I sigh, get the bus home and hide under the duvet until the next day. Sometimes I think I should not be let out unsupervised.
I hope you found my Birkenstocks story amusing! (Especially as it is fairly long..)

I would never put them in the same class as say Jimmy Choo’s, but who in their right mind would? Practicality and six inch heels were never meant to be. Ha,last summer I gave in too!Although I couldn´t do « the Birkenstock »,I could never pull that look in the photo,I´m too short(164cm) and have big feet(39)…but after having my third child last spring (all boys,so you never walk with them,you always run) I gave in to comfy flats…a pair of nude suedeleather thongs by camper…there is a healthy shoe for you,but of course they are not « hip » …since my first pregnancy I was hoping to become « bigger »,more feminine,but each child made me even skinnier,so what the hell,heels or not,I´m a stick-figure(with now happy feet)…and while my girlfriends are discussing the best jeans-fit for the apple or pear-shaped bottom(you see fruits still have something luscious about them),I´m there asking myself wether or not an asparagus can find the right jean too? (now there´s nothing louscious about the vegetable departement…just like BIRKENSTOCK) :)

I agree! I have also bought myself a new pair a few months ago and even wore them outside the house! Over the past few years my old ones only got to see our apartment floor. I think they also look great with summer dresses but of course you got to be careful about the kind of dress to make sure it does not look to bohemian. And I think they go well with the « Little House in the Prairie », American school trip trend which I think is on the way. » Little bit 90s hippie. OK I’ll stop now. Plus I’d take one pair of these Celiné slippers any day. x

Bon, eh bien avant d’aller à Buenos Aires, pour moi les Birks c’était pour aller à la plage, traîner chez soi l’été ou des fois les oser vite fait en public (hors plage) avec les ongles vernis (quand même) et un jean retroussé. Mais là..non MAIS LAAA ! Les beaux jours s’installent ici et qu’est ce que portent la majorité des filles? Mais des Birks compensées !!! Déjà que tout cet hiver on les as vues se déplacer avec toutes les plateformes possibles et imaginables, on ne pensait vraiment pas qu’elles allaient remettre ca les orteils à l’air.
Donc les Birks, ca passe… MAIS ATTENTION ! La Birk peut être vaiment, vraiment plus dégueu que ce qu’on connaît…j’espère juste qu’on n’ira pas jusque là en France (ou ailleurs…!).

Oh..it means that my grandma is a geniune trend setter/fashion genius because she wears her pair with grey or white socks and she always tells me how one day I might end up begging her to borrow me her pair!
Who knows, fashion is so unpredictable, seeing them in this light they have a coolness factor..OMG, what am I writing , I rememeber grinning just yesterday when I saw them!!! In Austria we wore Birkenstocks to school in the late 80s and early 90s. In hospitals and other public health environments they are pretty common with the staff. They are really great if your on your feet all day. I guess being next to Germany has something to do with them being really common for decades now.
When they got fashionable in the early 2000s everyone here scratched their heads because they were for students and for the job and not considered something to wear on the street.
I have bought tan Gizehs last summer and if your feet are in good shape I think they go great with Khakis and a white dress shirt in summer. Also they keep on your feet better than flip flops so you can actually run with them should the need arise :)

Pour ma part, non seulement après des années de talons hauts et beaucoup de marche à pied dans ma vie quotidienne, mes pieds ont réclamé plus de confort, mais en plus les birks me font penser à Marseille qui est une ville que j’adore (sans y avoir jamais vécu pourtant).
ah….finally, in the 90’s I came back from Germany with the gizeh thong, and they have been my summer staple ever since. everyone teased me, once they tried them on, then they too converted. in 2006 I broke my toe in the winter and couldn’t wear any of my shoes so I rocked the socks and 2 strap birk all winter long, people stopped me in the streets to tell me how cool it looked. in 2010 after the birth of my first daughter, putting on shoes when I was leaving the house was nearly impossible with the baby bjorn strapped to me, so I bought the clogs. I wear them all the time, I wear them to work, i wear them to pick up the girls from school, and now others around me are wearing them as well……

Si cela peut te rassurer, je suis en voyage en Asie et on a pas encore trouvé mieux que les Birkenstock (pas du tout moches si elles sont en noires ou en marron). Bref c’est un classique.
My mother is German, now living in the States, and has always adored Birkenstocks. We lived in Germany for 12 years and when it was time to move, she literally bought 5 different pairs of « Birkis » as she calls them, since they’re in the US, at least where we live.
This spring we’re flying to Germany for vacation, and on the top of her shopping list is – what else – Birkenstocks.
Germans really do love them, I see them all the time. I, however, have slim feet and find it difficult to walk in them. They’re quite bulky, too. But I do respect them as a German cultural institution.

omg! this post cracks me up!!! i remember getting my first pair of birkenstocks – the classic clog! probably 10 years ago in high school. everyone had them. my mom was nice enough to purchase a pair for my brother & i. & you know what?!?!?! i STILL have them!! that same pair from high school!! and every time i go through my closet to clean out old clothes or shoes, i look at those shoes & think to myself « i could never throw those away! they are so comfortable & they remind of the time in my life when i thought i was cool wearing them! » so yeah….i think i will bust those out this weekend! thanks Garance!
Tout l’été, j’étais habillée avec une robe Maison Martin Margiela et des Birkenstock. Je pensais que ce n’était vraiment pas cascher tout cela… J’ai tout de même insisté, car j’ai un peu la tête dure en terme de style, je suis du genre à persister contre vents et marées. Mais, maintenant, j’ai repris confiance en mes goûts, parfois douteux! Merci, encore, Garance!
my philosophy is: it doesn’t matter if it’s ‘in’ as long as it looks good. and sometimes, yes, that means birkenstocks! also, i’m from portland, oregon, so my style depends on the city i’m in. in portland, most stylish people are wearing hats they’ve knitted alongside local, really cool/chic designers, and, well, yea – birkenstocks. i would never wear them in paris though!!
omg i didn’t even see your portlandia post… haha not to say that it’s really like that but birkenstocks are pretty high up there on the ‘never over’ list.

J’avais une copine aussi qui les portait (et les porte toujours) très bien, alors je m’en suis achetée une paire (mais les entre-doigts) cette année.
Hé bien je te le donne dans le mille, non seulement je ne les trouvais pas confortables, mais en plus je trouvais que ça n’allait avec rien.
Donc finalement, je les porte chez moi, comme chaussons… et avec des chaussettes (oui, j’arrive à porter des entre-doigts avec des chaussettes…) !

I have been wearing birkenstocks and floral socks in the summer and birks and wool socks in the winter (exactly like the photo!) for the past two years! It adds a modern grunge look to a boring outfit. I’m at university, and I get so many compliments when I wear them this way.
Love the Birkenstocks…Easier today while in Barney’s saw a woman wearing a pair of Isrealis sandals

Divinely comfy, but yes…yes…, I DO wish the toe area was a bit sleeker…
I will admit, the only reason Birks ever caught my eye was because Michael Kors
used to make a sleek gold pair way back in the day.
I love birks, but than I wear uggs too.
I gotta tell you, I live most of the year in this tiny town where Birkenstocks are just the trendiest thing. . . it’s like something is in the water, I don’t even know. But it’s heavenly, you just wear ’em everywhere (with wooly socks and skinny jeans to class? with a skirt or a dress to go ‘out’? with cool jean shorts and lacy tops in the summer? check check check check) and they’re perfect for me, who is always breaking/scuffing her shoes (but not these), and they’re so so comfortable. So Birkenstocks, yes! But if you don’t want to be the laughing-stock of the fashion world, come visit us here, we’ll welcome you with open arms.

It’s coming into Summer here in Sydney, I’ve been umm-ing and ahh-ing about getting a pair. I really want to get some, but I have a fear that I will try on an outfit, look in the mirror and my mind will scream at me: « why, Alison, WHY? »
But after reading this, I’m just going to bite the bullet, get a pair and wear them. Yes, yes it’s going to happen. I’m having lunch on the weekend at Coogee… locals consider yourself warned, no staring at my feet, unless in total jealousy.

Just bought a pair of Gizeh in black patent…wear them with shiny black nail polish and black leggings, it does look rather nice. And feels SO comfy!
Pendant des années j’ai été écœuré par la seule vision d’une paire limite outree… Ça fait touriste et blah et blah…
Mais il faut bien se rendre à l’évidence la birkenstock flatte le pied & le doigt de pied – a condition qu’il soit joliment pédicuré évidemment et elle donne même à l’allure un petit côté nonchalant.
Donc on ? évidemment mais sans la chaussette, je ne suis pas prête pour la chaussette…way too Fashion forward thinking pour moi!

C’était plus long que prévu, mais la prédiction s’est réalisée : les pieds meurtris ont céder sous la pression des pieds résistants ! Bientôt les pieds seront libres et égaux en droits. Les résistants pourront rivaliser avec des talons sans se sentir pris de haut. BONHEUR. VICTOIRE !
(On sait aussi que tu n’es pas malade Garance, mais c’est un détail devant un peuple entier libéré tu comprendras…)
Obsessed with Birks, that’s me. I have worn them for ever and have never failed to receive some comments , not always constructive, but who cares!! Gizehs are my favorites and I probably own 15 pairs. Papillo’s always come up with beautiful design and I try to snatch at least one each summer. Europe has the best selection though and I have ordered them directly from Germany. Needless to say Texans don’t dig them but they look great with linen shorts, pants, dresses. They are comfy and always turn heads… I own a few pairs of Arizonas as well and they rock! Welcome to the B. club ladies!!
i prefer crocs, and i don’t care if they’re in style or not. bought first birkenstocks back in 1990. thought they were cool, but crocs are way better. you can wear them in the river and then on the street.
permanently out of style for me is heels. mistyped there ‘hells’. how freudian was that.
It’s crazy, but I love Birks. My English friends wore them couple of years ago, and I was jealous of them having so much comfort during summer days while I was wearing ballerinas and always felt my feet were suffering hypothermia. :D They reminded me of those silly tourists with no sense for style.
Then I got myself a pair of silver ones, so comfy and pretty! Anatomic sole and stuff, affordable. Now I’m seeing branded Birks come in fashion.

Birkenstock has some cool pairs of shoes. But those classic two-stripe ones? Please, tell me that you are not serious. Those should be forever glorified as a great wear-at-home shoes but should never be seen in public.
Ok, I’m not so sure of Birkentocks, however I don’t think they too horrible to be worn. What I do really hate, and I hope no one in here feels insulted but CROCS are like cancer in the street. I can’t figured out how people use them. is just, TERRIFYNG!!!! WHO THE HELL IN THE ENTIRE WORLD WEAR CROCS IN THE STREETS? AND PARTYS? AND LIFE? UGHHHH….horrible…

Je ne porte ni cuir ni fourrure , birk fait enfin (trop peu) des modèles 100%vegan . La galère de l’été pour trouver une sandale portable avec tout (aujourd’hui 40 à l’ombre Paris 7éme , je suis plus chaud que la Dalle) sans étre obliger de taper le string havaianas , maman m’a toujours dit pas de string fiston c’est fait pour attendre au bar .
Nous sommes en 2015 , la birk toujours au top !
