Je vais vous parler une dernière fois de Mykonos… Ok bon, une avant-dernière fois, et puis après, je vous promets de ne plus vous soûler avant l’année prochaine.
Oui non parce que, bien sûr, j’ai déjà décidé d’y retourner.
J’en suis rentrée inspirée, en pleine forme, et pleine de souvenirs merveilleux dans la tête…
C’est assez surprenant au début, ces paysages secs et rasés qui plongent dans la mer bleue. C’est le genre de beauté pure, presque sévère qu’on apprend à aimer et qui, une fois apprivoisée, repose profondément l’esprit.
Bien sûr, il y a les Grecs et leur art de vivre. Hyper accueillants, cools, fêtards, partageurs.
Ensuite, il y a les hordes de touristes. C’est pas comme si j’avais découvert l’île hein – c’est un endroit hyper méga touristique où l’on ne peut pas se garer et où l’on entend parler toutes les langues. Mais à Mykonos, ça ne me dérange pas.
C’est l’été, c’est fun, c’est busy. Ça fait partie de l’ambiance.
Et surtout, vu qu’il y a une vraie culture de la nuit à Mykonos, les gens prennent ça très au sérieux. Et le soir, pour sortir, on s’habille, on sort les robes de soirée et les talons.
C’est une tradition qui se perd à une allure déconcertante, et ça me désespère car j’aime beaucoup ça, passer la journée à la plage, rentrer se doucher, se faire beau pour le soir, finir au petit matin.
À Mykonos, ça existe toujours, et j’adore ça.
Quand on m’a dit pour la première fois : “Rendez-vous au restaurant à 10h30 !” J’ai pas bien imprimé. À New York, ce n’est pas rare de se retrouver pour diner à 7h et d’être au fond de son lit à 10h30.
À Mykonos, on apprend à prendre son temps, et on s’habitue très très vite. Les boutiques sont ouvertes jusqu’à 3h du matin. On peut rester à la plage jusqu’à 7h tranquille (mes heures préférées pour aller à la plage sont entre 5 et 7-8h pour le coucher du soleil). On arrive au resto vers 10h, on commence à dîner vers minuit, on finit vers 1h30, 2h, et après on va danser si on a envie.
Franchement, des journées longues comme ça, ça change la vie.
Vous avez déjà dû en entendre parler, puisqu’à chaque fois que je disais que j’allais à Mykonos, on me regardait avec un drôle d’oeil, mais c’est vraiment l’île de la fête.
On croise des hordes de kids risquant leur vie en scooter pour aller en club, et selon le genre de plage qu’on choisit, on peut se retrouver dans un genre de rave party avec filles en maillot et mecs à gros cigares. Pas trop mon truc, hein. Mais la bonne nouvelle, c’est que c’est facile à éviter. Il y a aussi des plages très, très calmes.
Et l’autre bonne nouvelle, c’est que l’esprit de la fête est un peu contagieux. On danse dans les restos, dans les bars, la musique est bonne, les gens ont envie de s’amuser, de partager, un apéro tourne vite en soirée.
J’ai même failli aller voir Bob Sinclar mixer, un soir. Oh, j’ai aussi même failli aller voir Julio Iglesias en concert sur une plage, un autre soir. Ok, j’ai bien dit failli.
Je crois qu’il n’y a pas besoin de faire un dessin, tout le monde le sait – on mange merveilleusement bien en Grèce et en plus, c’est très sain, très frais, très simple.
Très reposant en fait, comme les paysages.
Entre ça et mes nages quotidiennes, je suis rentrée complètement énergisée. Et amincie en plus.
Pas un jour de mauvais temps et paraît-il, c’est comme ça tout le temps. C’est que le vent souffle assez régulièrement. Au début, ça fait un peu bizarre, puis on s’habitue. Ça aère quand il fait trop chaud et ça ne laisse pas aux nuages trop le loisir de s’attarder.
Donc ça donne un peu une météo comme ça.
Pas une méduse et pour une Corse déprimée de n’avoir pas pu se baigner à Ajaccio la semaine d’avant, je peux vous dire que ça change tout. La mer est plate comme une piscine comme je l’aime (si vous aimez le surf, passez votre chemin) et on peut se faire de vraies longues nages avec palmes et tuba. Sublime, cool, relaxant, bonheur de vivre.
Si vous me connaissez un peu, vous savez que les maisons blanches de Mykonos, peintes en blanc dedans dehors et meublées très simplement sont un peu mon idéal de déco. Demain je vous posterai des photos de l’hôtel où je suis descendue et ça vous donnera une idée du style que je veux donner à ma prochaine maison. Inspiration complète et totale.
Je n’ai pas fait le tour des îles mais évidemment, beaucoup de ceux qui recherchent des vacances calmes choisissent une autre île que Mykonos. Moi je n’ai visité que Delos, une île mythique où l’on va se recueillir sur les ruines. On y est allés dans un petit bateau de pêcheur sublime et après avoir visité les ruines, on s’est baignés dans les eaux transparentes.
Maintenant j’ai envie de visiter toutes les îles une par une, bien sûr.
Voilà pour mes vacances !!! Et vous, vous êtes allés où ?

I just got got back from Corsica and am already planning to go back next year, this time with a car to explore the north and the east of the island. I have never been anywhere like it, and I can’t even begin to describe how much I loved the beaches (we went to a different one every day), the pace of life, the food, the amazingly clear water, the cafes, the little streets in the Ajaccio’s old town, the hiking…i could go on and on…! Such a special place!

I love this description of Mykonos! Whenever I wanted to go, all my Greek friends were saying: It’s so touristy!, So, I haven’t visited yet but I always had a feeling that I have to go. After your description, I am totally convinced. So far, it has been Summer in NYC for me. I cannot complain but I miss seeing the never ending horizion of Maine coast..I have to admit

Love, love, love Greece. I’m familiar with lots of its islands: Mykonos, Santorini, Creta, Rodi, Zacinto, Lefkada and the Ionian Islands. My absolute favorite one is tiny and lush Paxi: very laid back, but its fine beaches, grottos and vegetation make it look like heaven to me. You should check it out. Last time I was in Paxi, fabulous Valentino’s yacht was there.
Vieques! (Island of Puerto Rico.) Can’t wait to return. We went this winter, not this summer, and it was like paradise. Weather like in Mykonos. Perfect beaches and water. Maybe not fashion, but I liked the rough edges. This summer it is visiting my husband’s family in France, Alsace and Paris when it starts to wake up toward la rentree.

That’s another thing we loved about Vieques, it felt like our own little secret, like everyone there was in the special club. Not commercial at all. We visited Hix Island House and it is amazing! We couldn’t stay there, our daughter is five, but as soon as she turns 16 (age limit) we are booking Hix Island House.
Carla….that is where I stay ! Hix House is just perfect ….or if you need something more conventional and , unfortunately , a chain hotel…the only luxury hotel on the island for now , the W, is not bad….but I hate resort hotels and chain hotels , so I stay at Hix and take a jeep and go to beach 1 , beach 2, beach 3….every morning and afternoon a different beach
W makes for a conventional holiday in Vieques , Hix House is the adventure holiday…and then you also go to day trips to Culebra etc

Je viens juste de passer 8 jours à Spetses (iles saroniques) et je partage à fond tes impressions sur la Grèce. Cela fait maintenant 4 ans que je vais là-bas chaque été et je ne me lasse pas de la douceur de vivre des grecs, des petites criques désertes où l’on accède qu’en bateau, de la nourriture si goûteuse et saine, de leur rythme si décalé par rapport à nos habitudes, bref j’adore aussi leur enthousiasme et sens du service. I spent my summer vacation at Pawleys Island, South Carolina. Beautiful wide beach, lots of sun, great seafood and ‘arrogantly shabby’ as the locals like to say.
Sublimes photos, ça donne très envie d’aller en vacances à Mykonos. Pour ma part, hormis quelques jours chez moi à Biarritz en Juillet, les vrai vacances commencent Lundi. Direction la Grèce aussi mais moi, j’irai à Paros, Morgos et Kouffounisi. Je ne connais pas en encore la Grèce mais je sens que je vais adorer! J’ai hâte :-)

Aaaaah les îles grècques… j’en suis tombée folle raide dingue il y a plus de 10 ans… des amis se mariaient à Patmos au mois de juin et depuis j’y suis retournée chaque été… tes photos évoquent beaucoup de choses pour tous mes sens! Cette année j’ai l’impression d’aller au pôle nord car… direction la Bretagne! ouille ! 20° en moins, j’en grelotte déjà, moi la méditéranéenne! La Grèce quel paradis… tu peux en parler et en reparler, ne te gêne pas !

Pour moi les vacances ont été fabuleuses, en suivant votre blog j’avais l’impression d’une vie parrallèle..même achats….même ciel bleu….mêmes impressions….
Pendant 15 jours j’ai visité serifos, sifnos et paros trois iles super calmes des cyclades….j’y retournerais c’est sur pour visiter de nouvelles îles on se croisera peut-être…..

Ohhhh quand je disais il y a 5 ans que Mykonos c’est tellement cool et bien loin de l’idée du clubbing hard que l’on s’en fait ! Je rêve d’y retourner (Paros est une Iles sublimes aussi).
Je reviens d’une semaine au Cap Ferret, tu devrais y aller, bonheur aussi pour la vie calme (tout se fait en vélo), des paysages sublimes, une nourriture saine, le rêve! La, je pars 5 jours aux roches Rouges (tu me fais peur avec ton histoire de méduses…..) et ensuite une semaine dans le Lubéron pour faire le marché le matin et flaner de village en village… Bref, vive les vacances d’été!

je suis partie en Sicile et j’ai adoré. Je comprends que tu es adoré la Grêce. J’ai déjà fait La Crête et Rhodes et j’ai adoré. C’est trop beau. J’ai adoré profiter de la plage… et du meltem (le vent)…. J’ai hâte de faire d’autres iles… A bientôt.

As a greek person that have visited many greek iskands , and also knowing Garance style, i have a hidden gem to recomend to you: you will be crazy about snatorini too but the gem is koufonissia ! To answer your question….
I went a looong time ago, this means thirty years ago, to Mykonos and the most of the islands around it.
I spent there, tipica, at that times, with my backpack for four weeks and it was fabioulos!! Still thinking about it. At Andros, I was on the other side of the island, at a beach totally lonely (with my boyfriend) and when I saw myself at the mirror after one week of only having beach and tent, I barely recognized myself. Soooo tanned, soooo wild looking…..never will forget that.
Also I remember my first time of getting drunk… Hahaha, also sleeping at the beach, I had to throw up, because that wine was really to heavy for me. But the worst thing was, that I had to wash my mouth with seawater, because there was nothing else…
Al that you made me remember now. Shurely everything had changed, but like I read in your posts it shure is still very exiting and worth to visit.
Now, I am living in Bolivia. Veeeery far away from Greece….but you never know. My son whould love to go there. Maybe….in next summer?
Nice, to get an impression of Greece through your eyes….your opinion means a lot to me, because you like the same things, that I do….at least, that is my impression, that I have since reading your post every day.

I’ve been to Mykonos several times,like five summers in a row!Everything you say is so true! Once you visit this island you want to go again and again. Now that we have a baby we’ve chosen Pelion in Greece, where the mountain meets the sea, a wonderful place for calm, relaxing vacations in both summer and winter! Google it!

Je partage ton enthousiasme sur Mykonos. Par contre j’y suis allée hors saison et cette foule en été me fait un peu peur. D’origine grecque et corse (si si ça existe) j’essaie d’aller le plus souvent possible en Grèce et sur l’Ile de Beauté.
Mykonos fait partie des Cyclades et je t’encourage vivement a aller voir un peu les autres îles de cet archipel (le plus beau du monde ;). Paros, plus tranquille, ses plages dorées et ses villages splendides. Naxos, plus grande, le sable plus clair et la aussi plein de petits villages (c’est ce qui m’a manqué à Mykonos). Alors bien sûr l’accent est moins mis sur la fête, il y a moins de beautiful poeple, mais il y a les vrais grecs, amoureux de leurs îles. Touristique mais incontournable, Santorin. Il faut le vivre pour le croire car c’est encore plus beau en vrai qu’en photo (et vu comme les photos sont belles, je te laisse imaginer). C’est une perle, vraiment. Sinon Milos et ses paysages lunaires.
Je vois que pas mal de blogueuses cette année ont choisi la Grèce, et je suis très contente, visitez ce beau pays qui a grandement besoin des touristes.
It is always a wonderful thing when a vacation refreshes your spirit and energises you to move forward on your path, whether its with a partner, or newly solo. I have been dreaming of Greece myself for this sort of rejuvenating trip, and you are definitely tempting me!!

Oh, what a post! We were in Mykonos a couple of years ago but in low season, so we didn’t had that party feeling. But the rest… I totally agree. And the light? Didn’t you love the light? It was so pure and bright!
I came back thinner too!!! Which, let’s face it ,is really strange for me. I always put on weight, always. If I’m on holidays, if I’m stressed at work, if it’s Monday, if it’s Spring… I don’t care. But in Mykonos I didn’t!!!
Oh, see? Now I want to come back. That’s why I never get to know more parts of the worls… I’m always nostalgic about what I’ve visited or where I spent nice times…

C’ est magnifique!!! Les Cyclades sont adorable! Moi je suis a Naxos, un ile aussi beau ou tu dois aller ;) je vais montrer quelques photos biantot sur le blog si tu veux voir !
Je suis allée sur l’Ile d’Yeu et mon fils nous a fait remarquer que les maisons ressemblaient à des maisons grecques, tant elles sont blanches. C’est vrai qu’il y a pas mal de points communs : les paysages, les gens (localisés à quelques endroits, car il suffit de pédaler un peu pour être seuls), les maisons, la mer, les ciels, les plages à choisir selon le vent (c’est facile comme l’île fait 9 km de long sur 4 de large), et j’ajoute : la tarte aux pruneaux. Après la Corse, c’est l’île la plus éloignée du continent, sur place, nous avons marché ou fait du vélo, surtout pas de voiture, et ça change les repères. C’est une île très préservée et authentique, j’aimerais y retourner en hiver, quand elle est encore plus sauvage !
J’adore les Cyclades et surtout Tinos.
Ah Garance, I miss the Mediterranean a lot! The stillness of the sea, the beautiful towns and the lifestyle. I love it! That is the real Summer for me. One where the day starts with the smell of coffee and chats with the locals, continues with the watermelon at the beach and ends with a dinner on some terrace near the sea. Pure life!

, c sûr! Mes parents l’ont toujours encensée depuis qu’ils étaient partis en 2 dech depuis la France dans les années 70! Quelle épopée! Et quelle magie à cette époque que de vivre Chez l’habitant et d.en embrasser les coutumes le temps de vacances…bref, tout était encore préservé…cette année pour nous ce fut Cuba et chez l’habitant aussi: MAGIQUE! Cours y vite avant que tout change, c splendide y la gente; le cœur sur la main! Ton œil de photographe se régalerait…
We had a lovely family vacation in Greece this year and spent 4 weeks travelling the islands – 3 days of which were spent in Mykonos. I now know that there is no longer any other destination for me except Mykonos! The time spent there was not enough.

Je suis d’origine grecque et pour le dernier long été d’étudiante de ma vie, je me suis dit « allez cette année je me force à ne pas aller en Grèce ». Du coup, j’ai l’impression que le monde entier a décidé d’aller en Grèce pour me contrarier. Ma famille, mes amis, tous les blogueurs/instagrammeurs que je suis. Bilan, 3 semaines à la Côte d’Azur où le vent, la mer à 19°, les énormes vagues et les méduses ont fini de me faire regretter mon choix. Ensuite j’ai compensé ma tristesse lors d’une semaine à Paris avec moults macarons et Paris-Brest.
Maintenant je n’ai plus qu’à attendre patiemment mes 15 jours de vacances l’été prochain pour retourner dans ce doux pays dont on ne peut que tomber amoureux.

Hello Garance, I visit your site really often and I understand the pleasures of Mykonos. Next time you come to Greece, forget about those touristy packed places. Try Kimolos and take the fisherman’s boat to go to Poluaigos – the greek Carribean. Go to Crete, it’s a must to experience the local music and the people who dance under the same rythm for hours. Mykonos is fine, used to be chic, now a bit trashy but Greece has so much tranquility and vitality to offer. Still unexpolred, rough and magical…discover it xxxx

Love your description Garance! I’m writing this comment from Agrari beach, Mykonos! This island is one of my two most favorite places on earth; the other being NYC! I’m visiting Mykonos 4-5 times every summer – couple of summers stayed there for almost a month! You’re right! Mykonos can be zen and luxurious, a crazy party setting and above all a place that offers variery of experiences and high-end services in terms of entertainment and hospitality. It has this beautiful energy of its warm people, the wind and the sun. I’m a fashion writer and for that matter I also have to say that the taste level in many aspects is really high! Plus there is some short of a fashion scene that’s really interesting! Famous designers such as Armani, Gaultier, DSquared, and Cavalli really love it! My next stop after Mykonos will be NYC for that Fashion Week in September! C U there!

I am currently on vacation in beautiful Belgrade! There are very many interesting sites to visit and inspirational parts of town! I hope one day you may experience it! Th next place on my list to visit is Mykonos and Santorini! Can’t wait….
I’ve visited Skiathos this year- that’t the island (together with Skopelos) where the film Mamma Mia was shoot :)) The island is only 48 km2, not crowdy at all, you can walk/run/ride to many beaches, where there won’t be a single person but you but if you only wish, you can meet people and party in Skiathos town. For me- heaven on Earth!!
Thank you Garance…. for being able to find the true, unspoiled, authentic, pure beauty that Mykonos is all about. This is exactly the Mykonos we love and keep visiting year after year. It never seizes to excite our senses and fill us with energy. Just like ‘true’ Greek people. Hope next week we come across each other, who knows.
Thank you Garance for the beautiful post featuring Greece! I came back 2 days ago from my annual trip to Greece (I’m Greek living in the States). Mykonos is among my favorite Greek islands, best enjoyed off-season (unless you’re in the 18-25 age range). Everything you mention except for the ‘party’ part is true for almost all parts of Greece (the sea, the sun, the food, the people, the style). Next time you visit, I’d recommend any (or all) of the following:
– Patmos: Equally chic, elegant island with minimalistic architecture and landscape, beautiful beaches, and a bit quieter (no party life as the bars close at 2am – Patmos is a « sacred » island as St. John wrote the Apocalypse there and the monastery has set these rules).
– Sailing the Ionian sea: I did this for a week this summer and enjoyed it so much! Sail into the small islands around Lefkada – the landscape is so different but equally beautiful (emerald green waters, cypress trees running till the beginning of the beach) and it’s less windy than the Aegean.
– (last but not least) Crete: Many readers have recommended it and there’s a reason for that! Start from Chania and plan to spend 10-15 days exploring the island. The food is admittedly the best in Greece so the caveat is that you probably won’t return thinner that time :)

I can’t believe Caprice is still there…I won’t even tell you how long ago I went (over a decade ago). I remember Caprice and can picture the bartender vividly shaking cocktails after midnight. If you know where to go…Mykonos has the most beautiful beaches. I opted for a more mellow option this summer…Antiparos. Happy Grecian Island hoping…there is no other island like Mykonos but others have their own charm.
Oh Garance! I loved this post! I’m Greek, living in the States and this article made me feel so nostalgic. All the parts of Greece share the same qualities: food, life, generosity, simplicity, beauty. Each place in this country is different, but they all share the same light!
