We love when a husband and wife duo are able to creatively work together and create something special. Such is the case for Garrett and Hillary Markenson, the minds behind REVERIE. They set out to create multi-hyphenate products designed for your multi-dimensional lifestyle, which can explicity be seen in their cult product, MILK. We chatted with them about how they both streamline and maximize their beauty routines.

Hillary Markenson, President of REVERIE:

What is your morning beauty routine? What products do you use throughout the day and why? What is your evening beauty routine? What is your definition of beauty? Garrett Markenson, Hair Stylist & Founder of REVERIE:

What is your morning beauty routine? What products do you use throughout the day and why?

I’m not a very rigid person when it comes to having a routine so every day looks a bit different as far as the order and products. Really depends on my mood. I open all the blinds to get sunlight first thing and generally try to have 30oz of water before I have coffee to wake my body up and get in 1/3 of my daily water intake right off the bat. Some mornings if time (and my 4 year old) permits, I’ll use our infrared sauna for 30-45 mins and try to sneak in some reading. We bought the sauna as a 5 year anniversary present for ourselves which has been amazing. I only wash my hair every 3 days, if it’s wash day I do an overnight oil treatment with REVERIE’s Ever Recovery Hair Oil then cleanse using REVERIE Shampoo followed with Cake Restorative Scalp Tonic, Milk Anti-Frizz Leave-in Treatment and Mare Mediterranean Sea Mist then let my hair air dry. If it’s not a wash day I brush for a minute or so with my Koh-I-Noor boar bristle brush and follow-up with a bit of Milk + Mare to refresh my style. Depending on what my skin is needing I either wash with H is for Love Rapha oil cleanser or Alpyn Beauty, followed up with MAKE Beauty Essence and Le Prunier face oil. In the drier months I use a heavy cream moisturizer. Post-Shower I use Necessaire Body Serum and Body Oil to keep my skin moisturized. Since dialing into my skincare products and getting my brows microbladed, I wear Ilia mascara, but that’s it for makeup unless I’m going to an event or something.

Weleda superfood hand cream because it’s the only thing that helps to combat dryness for me and MAKE Beauty Serum Balm in Sun Flare – it’s the perfect hint of color and truly keeps lips hydrated without any stickiness.

This is where I really lean into my skin and haircare rituals since I have more time once my son heads to bed. I LOVE a super hot epsom salt bath to end my day, paired with a face mask 2-3x per week and an oil treatment or hair mask. My current favs are H is for Love Propolis, Mara Detox Clay Mask or Biologique Recherche Creme Masque Vernix (this one I leave on overnight). For hair I use Ever Recovery Oil or a product we’ve been developing for Reverie that I’m testing. If I don’t have a treatment in, I spend a minute loving on my strands with my boar bristle brush to work down my natural oils and move debris off the scalp – this ensures that I wake up with manageable, oftentimes super voluminous hair. My chiropractor recommended a nightly stretching to combat the effects of working at a computer all day on my back and neck which usually takes 15 minutes. If I try to make things too complex I get overwhelmed and find it hard to stick to anything, pairing down and focusing on what makes me feel best has been the key to staying consistent.

For me, beauty is more of a feeling, an attitude, than an outward appearance. It’s being secure in who you are as a person and your purpose. It’s kindness, fresh bouquets of flowers, my child laughing, a good book next to the fire. Beauty is in everyone and everything, you just have to be willing to see it.

I prefer to start my day with jumping in the shower and grabbing REVERIE Suna Exfoliating Shampoo to give my scalp a refresh, the massaging elements of the exfoliating shampoo are a nice way to start off the day and it’s the perfect stimulating experience to kick start the morning. From there, I apply Aesops’s Oil Cleanser and Ayond’s Taos Blue Day Cream to my face, Nécessaire The Deodorant Gel for body, and for hair, REVERIE’s Cake Scalp Tonic and RAKE Styling Balm to finish off my everyday-look.

Throughout the day I’ll apply REVERIE Milk to tame or simply readjust my hair as well as GOLDA Hiba Wood Atmosphere Mist – I’m obsessed with spraying my clothes with this scent. The fragrance transcends me back to Japan with its wood-sy and mystic aroma.
