- How To...
I live in Hood River, a popular destination for wind sports. Needless to say a lot of sailors live here, from hobby to professional. Every Wednesday evening there is a local regatta and I have been out a few times. The biggest boat I went out on held 6-10 people and it was very exciting! I was there to provide ballast and spent the entire race crawling across the deck and trying not to get hit by the boom. The swell can get very big and waves were crashing over the boat. I was wearing neoprene to protect myself from bruises as well as the cold. A windbreaker, lifejacket and non-marking sneakers. My heart was pumping and we watched the windsurfers and kiteboarders zigzag out of our way. The race ends with the spinnaker up and sailing straight downwind, we celebrate whether we won the race or not. The sun is setting and everyone has had a wonderful time. We laughed and drank until we could no longer see each other in the darkness. Perhaps a little different than the cruise you might be dressing for : )
