« Comment se fait-il qu’on ne prenne conscience de l’amour qu’on porte à quelqu’un que lorsqu’il n’est plus là ? » C’est toi qui l’as dit et je n’en ai saisi le sens qu’après avoir lu les dernières lignes. D’un café new-yorkais à un autre, d’un pays à l’autre, j’ai vogué à tes côtés de longs moments, sans jamais m’ennuyer. Mon cœur était rempli, plein, transformé… comme tu le dirais. Ton vocabulaire a déteint sur moi, j’ai commencé à utiliser des termes comme « suranné » et « somnambuliste », pour que les gens comprennent que j’étais liée à toi, même si au départ j’avais dû Googliser ces mots pour les comprendre. J’ai demandé à des amis ou même des inconnus qui m’observaient trop longtemps s’ils t’avaient lu, et si ce n’était pas le cas, je faisais un compte-rendu détaillé en cinq minutes, je leur parlais de toi en long, en large et en travers, à tel point qu’ils n’avaient plus besoin d’acheter le livre.
Tu as dit « Rien ne peut être reproduit à l’identique » et manifestement c’est vrai, parce que tu ne me quittes jamais… et parfois, sur le quai, je laisse passer le J ou le Z, et j’attends que le M train arrive (même s’il est tard ou que c’est le week-end), juste pour me sentir un peu plus proche de toi.

Love this. Patti visited me in a dream recently. We worked together to assemble a shrine to her lost loves; Robert and Fred. A scrap of blood-red velvet reduced her to tears. I told her of my fears, especially of writing. She said, « You think I didn’t want to quit a thousand times? ‘Cause I did. But you just gotta read the pages and write the pages. Read the pages… and write the pages. »
I loved this book too! She is so singular.
I just read it and loved it so much!
For me it’s the kind of book that celebrates time. Time to just sit in a cafe, watch people, think about things… lots of coffee of course… :) Just letting life flow and seeing where it takes you.

was able to see her on her book tour and she treated us to a concert – it
was breath-taking – very special evening.
