Et voilà, j’ai complètement été avalée par la culture américaine. Je bois mon café par litres et je ne trouve même plus qu’il a un goût de jus de chaussettes ! Tellement pas français de ma part !

I had the same thing going on when I loved in NYC, I drank tea at first and then got into drinking coffee like it was going out of fashion. Now back in London what am I drinking?….. Yes you guessed it TEA! It must be a New York state of mind!

I agree. I used to go to Paris once a year, and after that Italy has been a yearly trip. So, for me, except for breakfast, espresso or espresso macchiato is the way to go. I still love my American coffee for breakfast though :)

et quand on a goûté à l’expresso italien, je me demande même comment on fait avec les expresso parisiens… Le meilleur (ah le macchiato servi par les serveuses, toutes italiennes!!), il est chez ILLY, à côté de l’Opéra

Chère Garance, on peut être complètment américanisé ou nord-américanisé (dans mon cas) et cela ne veut pas dire pour autant que l’on doive boire du café filtre. Ce n’est pas une obligation. C’est comme ici, à Montréal, plein de pauvres touristes français ou italiens arrivent ici en renoncant au café en pensant qu’il n’y a que de la merde ou des starbucks alors qu’il y a maintenant plein de petits cafés sympas où l’on sert de l’expresso et même souvent à l’italienne ce qui fait qu’il est vraiment bon.
Mais si ça te plait, c’est ce qui compte. Moi je ne jure que par le café sorti tout droit d’une machine expresso. J’ai mes adresses à Mtl; Flocons expresso, Il Gamba, Picolo café bar, Olive & Gourmando, Café Olympico et il y en a plein d’autres!

Je suis plus que d’accord avec toi pour Montréal Sylvia, la Française que je suis fuit les Starbucks & autres grandes enseignes. Il y a tellement de cafés chouettes ici =)

Vive le bon café corsé. Italien ou français mais certainement pas américain alors qu’il ne s’agit bien souvent que d’une eau chaude colorée. Mais tout est dans la mouture parce que bien des expressos sont imbuvables. Tiens … Je vous fais un bon petit café Garance? Un excellent mélange de mon marchand de café, Aux milles grains, sur la rue Cartier à Québec.

Garance, have you been checking out the new cafes that have populated NYC, London and Paris over the past few years with really good coffee? Next time you are in London try Flat White, Kaffeine and Milk Bar and in Paris you probably know about the cool espresso bars like Le Bal and Coutume that have popped up (mostly created by Australians). In NYC, try coffees made by Stumptown, Intelligentsia and Blue Bottle (on the High Line). Yum!
I stopped drinking coffee couple of years ago but I still adore the smell of it :) I like the cup, so simple :)

Whenever I get back from an extended trip to Paris, I always have trouble getting back into filtered coffee…it just seems so wrong. I ask myself how I ever enjoyed drinking litre sized Tim Horton’s double doubles…
This time, I think I might cave and get a Nespresso upon my return so that I can have my allongées without having to hoof it to a café. That habit adds up fast when you don’t have the comptoirs to cozy up to.

I used to be a big ol’ american coffee connoisseur, until I worked in a coffee shop for all 4 years of my undergraduate! The coffee smell gets into your hands (even after washing them, or showering!), your hair, your clothes, your shoes. Bleh. Plus, whenever I have a bag of coffee in my own home I associate it with the smell of trash (old coffee grounds), and wonder where that terrible smell is coming from. Now I drink only tea! Maybe someday I will be desensitized enough to drink it again…

As an america living in Spain I get so weary of people talking smack about our coffee. Some drip coffee/filter coffee/french press is really delicious! Just because it’s not espresso based doesn’t mean it’s not amazing. I make my own french press coffee at home every morning because I just love it that way! Welcome to the american way Garance!

I must confess, being an American and all, that, having tried Belgian coffee (I understand, NOT French) I thought it was mud! It was so thick I could almost balance my spoon in the cup; however, as I was way young and way hungover, it gave me the jolt I needed lol!

I adore everything in coffee: smell, vibrant texture, taste… I use no sugar and no milk, really, I think that’s mauvais ton ( pardon :P ).

Sorry American coffee is horrible. Agree with Jane – New Zealand coffee is really good. Our flat whites are all I drink. European coffee though surpasses American and British coffee in every way. Melbourne, Australia also has great coffee :)
Hate watery coffee but love Joan’s…. In fact I adore 3rd street. Garance maybe you’re becoming a hybrid :0) I lived for 17 years in America. East a little but mainly west coast before returning to the UK and I love my Americanisation.. The best of both.
Ahhh — what a lovely place to sit…as an ex-New Yorker I miss all the great spots there…next time you are in LA try Abbot-Kinney in Venice — you won’t be disappointed by the style or the coffee.

Certes en majorité le café y est franchement léger, mais si vous venez à Ann Arbor au Michigan, Garance, je vous promets bien des endroits où vous n’en croirez pas vos papilles. Et qu’ils prennent leur temps pour vous le préparer, et qu’il est donné dans de jolies tasses, et que le décor est sympa…Moi j’aime bien faire la publicité aussi de cette image-là.

Moi, installée à L.A depuis qque temps, je n’arrive pas à m’y mettre…dommage, j’adore l’idée de boire dans ces grands mugs, ou mieux de boire un grand latte d’Intelligentsia ou même de Starbucks en marchant jusqu’à la voiture, en conduisant dans la voiture, en sortant de la voiture pour arriver à la manucure… Très jolie photo, j’adore cet endroit…et tes posts sur L.A!

I am american, and I think most coffee is made too watery, so I often add a shot of espresso. That makes it taste bolder. I like it black.
This is one of the best drip coffees in LA. No question. They use Portland’s Stumptown beans and the result is wanting to drink it in gallons (as we American’s say, « chug ») ;)

mais comment mais comment peux tu…? Mais au départ, tu lui trouvais quel goût à cette infusion euh café ? Je blague hein, chacun son café. L’expresso italien vaut par exemple un ristretto en France, et un café en France est appelé un express (diminutif de expresso ou italianisation du terme je sais pas) en Suisse.
(pour l’italianisation en Suisse, on dit vraiment Tchô tchô pour dire au-revoir au téléphone, pas Ciaaaao)

Garange, I have to handed to you. I have been living here for 7 years now and the only thing I didn’t get use to is the coffee. You need to spend more time in France, and buy an expresso machine for your house :)
Comme toi, 10 ans à Montréal, et je suis tellement habituée au « régulier » que je ne bois plus que ça… Et ce n’est pas forcément du jus de chaussettes pour autant. Comme le disaient d’autres filles, il y a des tas de petits cafés ici, qui font des expresso et aussi du café filtre savoureux (la micro-torréfaction saint-Henri fait de l’excellent filtre, rien à voir avec Starbucks)
A friend of mine mentioned that she had some French visitors at her office. To be the excellent hostess that she is, she offered to prepare a to go coffee mug for them. She said that when she said this they looked at her with utter confusion. Apparently, the idea of drinking coffee on the go was very strange to them. Maybe this doesn’t seem strange to you now, but when you first came to the U.S. what did you think about this idea of taking your coffee with you, instead of sitting down to drink it slowly and appreciating the flavor of it? Is this really an American thing?
I drink lots lots cups of tea every day… how un-Greek is that lol!

Los Angeles, je connais moins. Mais je pense qu’on peut trouver de bonnes adresses, sans vouloir dénigrer celui de Joan’s on Third, car je parle d’espresso et qu’un café filtre bien fait est bon si on est amateur.
Il n’y a pas de mauvaise méthode, il n’y a que du mauvais café…
