The French Braid
10 years ago by
i have never been able to do that… :P

French braids are the best!! Love them.

I’m so pleased with myself because I just recently taught myself how to french braid my own hair. I’m a little late in the game but I’m loving french braids lately–especially with the childhood nostalgia you talk about!
Skiing holidays and windsurfing, my mum made my cousin and I have our hair like that all day long on holidays. Now I do it for the other girls in my office. I love them, still wear my hair like that a lot.
Reminds me of so many gymnastics competitions. One of the moms would do all of the girls’ hair and DAMN did she braid a tight braid. Nowadays I do my own French braids for a casual chic look for hot summer days.
I love the way a French braid looks when someone else does it, but whenever I try myself it’s either too loose or lopsided. They’re amazing for working out in when done right!
When I was a kid in international elementary school the French girls called French braids « tresses africaines »…Garance or anyone else know if that’s what it goes by?

Yes, Gabriela, you are right!
I’m french, and I always called these braids « tresses africaines » (« African braids »).
I didn’t know you call them french. Funny!
I absolutely wish I could French braid; I am atrocious at it! :] // itsCarmen.com ?
I wear French braids constantly! You’re right – they’re so secure. I can run in them, or put my damp hair up in them and they stay all day. And if I take them down the next morning, presto! Waves! I hope to never outgrow them.
love this braid

Yes it does look ideal for hot summer weather. Now when will I learn to braid my own hair, and how do other girls make it look so easy?
In France we call it « tresses africaines » ahah funny
My hair is too short for it now, but when it’s a little bit longer, I will try it definitely! Great!

Love her braid and especially that Dolce & Gabbana swimsuit!

I love that braid so much!

I love it ,it looks always great on young face…as for myself i used to make this french braid when i was young and although i found it nice on others….it is impossible to do it again…it’s truth for many things in fashion that are coming back …

Do you know this instagram account ? http://instagram.com/instabraid
It has all the craziest braids ever !
I am still trying to perfect the self French braid. It’s such a fun and different look to keep the hair out of your face for Summer. My favorite part of the French braid was undoing it after having slept on it and having these amazing crazy Summer waves!
Coucou !

I love the braid!

I’m happy to see that you are giving the French braid the props that it deserves! I am a scuba diver/underwater photographer, and the French braid is a necessity when underwater (long hair flying around dive and photo equipment is a recipe for problems). I can whip my dry hair into a French braid in less than 60 seconds. Sometimes I do two braids, which is kind of fun, but this look is a bit too Britney schoolgirl for daily wear.
This was my favourite hairstyle when I was a teenager.
Perfect for those warm months.

Love these kind of braids! I’m still struggling to get them perfect when doing them myself. Having someone else to do them for you is the easiest way by far! I can’t even count the number of times I’ve sat doing one only to find out it looks terrible from the back. I’m determined to keep trying though, haha.

I’ve become obsessed with french braiding my hair recently too! I love it because its classic and I can wear it in almost any situation. I can make it look dressy, but I also often wear it when I work out!
I was pretty bad at it when I started, but practice has made me much better!
I think it is officially a Dutch braid, pretty!

The secret is to learn yourself with your eyes closed. That’s how I learned.
Grab a strand from left or right and pull the ‘new hair’ with the old strand, and bring it to the middle. Repeat on the other side. It’s easier to do than to teach! ;-)
Don’t worry about any bumps, they will disappear when you loosen your braid or when you comb the bumps to the middle of your braid.
Good luck girls!
My hairdresser says French braids are a day off from caring for your hair. I love them.
Where I’m from we call it russian braid. :) I’ve never managed to make it myself… I practiced on my Barbie (when I was 8yo, hey you! :)) but it never turned out well (not even on Barbie’s head) ahhh…
