Vous êtes déjà allées vous faire bronzer au parc ?
À New York, l’été, les parcs sont comme de vraies plages. Il fait tellement chaud que les gens se baignent dans les fontaines. C’est cool, c’est joyeux, on peut même acheter des glaces à l’eau, mais moi j’oserais jamais (bon en même temps, comme je n’aime pas trop me faire bronzer, il ne me resterait plus que l’option « aller me baigner dans la fontaine » – on va dire que je préfère attendre la plage.
N’empêche, c’est une atmosphère que j’avais envie de capturer sur le blog depuis longtemps… Voici un petit tour à la plage avec Caroline et Sarah.

Un peu bizarre en effet, quand on n’a pas l’habitude. J’ai fait mes études dans une université américaine et aux premiers beaux jours, toutes les filles étaient en bikini sur la pelouse du campus, devant la bibliothèque, je ne comprenais pas trop. En même temps, les saisons sont tellement marquées qu’à la sortie d’un long hiver rigoureux, il y a une espèce d’euphorie générale. Et les étés de la côte Est sont caniculaires

I have a little secret walled in public garden in Paris where I can sunbathe but even then ….never in a bathing suit

Weird. I might get into a fountain…but in my shorts. No way would I strut around in a bathing suit in a park like that. Its totally begging for attention.
Je pense que passer l’appréhension du début, la chaleur de New York aurais raison de mes réticences. J’oserais dans un premier temps le short plus haut de maillot de bain.

Sur les quais de Strasbourg et dans les parcs, les gens sortent avec leurs serviettes mais ne se baignent pas, il y a trop de courant et les fontaines sont toutes petites! C’est dommage, sinon j’oserais sans problème. Les photos sont magnifiques <3

Having just returned from my yearly check up with the dermatologist, who just zapped two pre-cancerous spots off of my arm, I will say that you are extremely wise not to sunbathe. Skin damage is forever.

Non, non, et non. I live near the Hudson River Park so I see plenty of sunbathers over there (shocked when I spotted a completely topless woman, lying on her back, while walking the terrier with my 18-year old godson!!!) and since they’re by the water it doesn’t seem as out-of-place, but in a park like Washington Square, smack dab in the middle of the city? No. Maybe paired with shorts, but walking around in a bikini, no. That said, on a scorcher like yesterday, I’m tempted to join the kids on the Bleecker Street playground, running through the water sprays!
C’est exactement pareil à Paris, dès qu’il y a un carré d’herbe! Les gens en maillot avec des chapeaux en paille, dès qu’il y a un rayon de soleil et une température qui le permet… Moi je suis comme toi Garance, je viens du Sud, du coup je ne conçois ABSOLUMENT PAS de faire comme si c’était la plage, au mieux je me mets les mollets au soleil, je roule mes manches de t-shirt et je bois un bon coca light bien frais, mais tout ça n’est que dans l’attente, interminable, de retrouver la plage, la vraie…
I believe that anyone coming from somewhere near the beach would actually wear a bikini in the park…

On the contrary ! I live in Normandy, and therefore, I would never walk in a bikini in a city, I’d just wait to go back to my beaches… I think when you live in a big city with no beach around, and you want to be tanned, you have no other choice than sunbath in a park ;)

What’s the difference between a girl in a swimsuit and most of the fashion and beauty ads / billboards you see around the city? I live in a city for the opposite reason — people are generally more open-minded and free to do what makes them truly happy. A beach, a park, it’s all the same in the joy of summer.

As a New Yorker who lives near that fountain, it’s weird to see! It’s kids who usually splash around there and it’s only recently that adults have started using the grass and the fountain as places for themselves. There were always a few people who’d lie in the sun on the west side and Central Park, but it seems like in recent years there’s so many more. I don’t love it at all.
Je ne suis pas sûre que j’oserais (enfin, on est dans une VILLE quand même) mais pour sûr j’envierais les gens qui osent ! Je dois dire, qu’après avoir connu la campagne et le sans vis-à-vis, le manque de verdure et de bronzette dans le jardin me manque depuis que je vis à Paris. Pour ça, peut-être que je me laisserai tenter un jour. Mais pas tout de suite.

Eh bien moi je pense que je le ferais sans problème. Quelle différence d’être en maillot dur du sable ou de l’herbe, du moment qu l’on ne choque personne? C’est un peu comme une piscine après tout, un espace de soleil et de détente en ville. Je comprends l’envie d’échapper à la chaleur, surtout dans une métropole telle que New York! Et puis dans une ville où le topless féminin est autorisé au même titre qu’un homme torse nu, ça ne devrait pas trop surprendre les gens!

Yes! I live in a place with no water/ lake/ nice pool in the neighbourhood so the park is a definite solution for me when it comes to sunbathing and relaxing!

Maintenant que je vis dans le sud la mer n’est pas loin alors ça facilite les choses :) Je n’oserais pas me mettre en maillot dans un parc je pense, même entre copines. Pour moi, maillot = plage ou piscine, en tout cas, lieux de vacances ou tout le monde est pareil quoi ^^
Sinon je trouve les photos vraiment bien !
I have to say… after 12 years in NYC I still don’t lay out in the park in my swimsuit. Something about it just seems so awkward to me. But, I love these photos and the shots that you took are amazing.
Franchement ? Beurk ! J’ose meme pas imaginer le nombres de bactéries dans l’une de ces fontaines. Surtout a Washington Square ou tu vois les clochards prendre leur bain et faire leur lessive…
Et le concept du maillot dans le parc, je trouve ca bizarre. Je ne peux de toute facon pas faire le lezard sous le cagnard new-yorkais sans un point d’eau rafraichissant. Alors je vais à Fire Island !

I’m with Curiosités à NY on this one. Well, bathing suit in the park, maybe. Going in the fountain, NO WAY. A friend of mine who works for the Parks Department and often does gardening in Washington Square Park assures me that sparkling and pretty as the fountain may seem, it’s about as sanitary as you’d expect the recycled water in a public fountain in a large city to be: that is, not at all.
If my body looked like either of those in the photo, I would do it in a heartbeat!
The same happens in London on hot days.., not the same as going to the beach of course, but it’s great fun! When the sun shines here we tend to worship it..wherever and however we can!
that’s the one thing that is missing in LA! A good day at the park! I love going to Parc Monceau in Paris and just hanging out in the summer!!

Yikes. Bathing suits should be saved for, you know, bathing in the water. Not sitting in city parks. This is fun for a fashion shoot, but not in real life. Totally inappropriate!

Moi je ne le fais pas ( j’ai la chance d’ avoir un bateau et de pouvoir faire bronzette dessus ) mais je trouve ça cool .
En tout cas , à Montréal , ça ne choque personne . Que ce soit au bord du magnifique canal de Lachine ou au parc du Mont Royal ( ou ailleurs )
C’ est l’ été et c’ est agréable de voir les gens en profiter et s’approprier la nature en ville . Je trouve aussi que c’ est bien si les filles peuvent se mettre en maillot dans un parc sans être importunées ( pas top less évidemment !!!) parceque ce n’ est pas le cas partout , loin de la .

It’s ok for city dwellers with no close access to real nature (sea, lake etc).People do this in London too. I love sunbathing in my garden and on the beach. (Safe sunbathing, blah blah.) Thanks for sharing the atmosphere!!!
I do it often. Love a good sunny day in the park. My balcony only catches shadow and the park is two minutes away. And luckily, in Amsterdam I’m not the only one lying in bikini in the park. On sunny days off I often wear bikini, or ‘bikini-ish underwear’ underneath, so I can soak up the sun in the park at any time.
Ooook….I admit I have never been to New York and have no idea about customs or lifestyle in general, life costs, but I do believe that if you wear a 260 dollars bikini and other about 80 dollars YOU CAN AFFORD TO GO SUNBATHING TO A PRIVATE POOL.
Here in Spain people do that at parks, but only top not full body, but they are students with no money or people with little or no resources.
No, in the city my motto is: keep your pants on. You never know who you’ll see strolling through the park, one of your clients, your boss or colleagues.

Ici, à Berlin, il y a beaucoup de parcs. Non seulement les gens bronzent mais ils bronzent souvent à poil!
Perso, je ne le ferai pas, je préfère garder mon maillot de bain voire même aller dans un parc où il n’y pas de naturisme.
Car tenez-vous bien : les gens à poil ne font pas que bronzer, ils font du sport aussi. Voir un homme nu faire des abdos ou une femme nue faire des ciseaux en face de moi, c’est un peu trop á mon goût.
C’est « inappropriate » et un peu show off non ?
J’aime pas non plus les gens en bord de mer qui croient qu’au restaurant, on est à la plage, alors en ville (sans plage) …

Quand j’étais en stage à New York pendant l’été, il y a eu « Summer streets » et j’ai vu les gens se baigner dans les fontaines. Je n’ai pas résister à l’envie d’immortaliser cela en photo également ! Et il faisait tellement chaud, que je m’y suis quand même laissée aller à y tremper les pieds :)
That looks lovely! Here in Groningen (the Netherlands) the parks are full of sunbathing people in bathing suits when the weather allows it. I never realized people would find it offensive though.. I have been loving it for years.
Yes! I love park sunbathing (probably b/c I grew up in Colorado with no beach). When I studied abroad in Buenos Aires I would sunbathe in the park all the time. It’s so relaxing. For some reason even being in the middle of a busy city, just lying in the park in your swimsuit feels freeing.
C’est vrai que ça doit être agréable de profiter d’un parc new yorkais comme si c’était une plage l’été, avec maillots de bain, paréos et glace à l’eau, mais moi non plus, je ne sais pas si j’oserais. Je suis quand même bien contente de pouvoir aller à la plage en vélo tous les jours de l’année ;)

à Genève, on voit des gens en maillots dans tous les parcs publics dès que le temps le permet. On voit aussi des familles qui pique-niquent dans un doux mélange de maillots, de t-shirts et de bermudas.

In Denmark it is very common to see people sunbathing in the park (but haven’t see anyone jumping in a fountain, euh). I love the sea, but it is not my neighbor (unfortunately), so when I do not have that much time I do sunbathe in the park (yes, wearing a bikini).. I don’t think it is weird, simply because everybody else do it..

Although I understand the appeal, especially if you holiday is far away, I wouldn’t. May be NY is very different to London, but there is just something so un-chic about it. However, unlike the beautiful girls in your pictures, mostly you get extremely pale glimpse of stomach under a rolled up t-shirt. Personally, I might just stick to the beach. x
